UnKamen RX 192 – Kids, Could You Lighten Up a Little?

header1 copy

So, hey, your humble hosts are back for another fun-filled romp through Toei and Muto Shogo’s Kamen Rider Build!

And by “fun-filled romp”, we of course mean that Build continues to be an incredibly well-realized series the likes of which haven’t been seen in quite some time in media generally, but which also is pretty consistently working to break our hearts.

So, really, “fun-filled romp” was just misleading in the extreme.  I really should edit that out instead of leaving this examination of how the words I say aren’t the things I mean.

But I clearly haven’t.

KRBuild and the world

So, this week, Aleph and Sono take this happy fun-time show for kids and get into:

  • Problematizing simple dualistic narratives of “good” and “evil”
  • How for all we feel some kinda ways about how heavy the show is, we still appreciate that the people making Build are very interested in not messing about with the ideas they bring up
  • Sawa: saves the day A LOT; still not in the opening
  • A monkey’s paw wish
  • Comparisons to moments in both Gaim and Drive (spoiler: they aren’t good for those two series)
  • Comparisons are also made to moments in Kuuga (spoiler: Build comes out pretty good)
  • Y’all, this cast is good
  • Special shout-outs to director Kamuhorichi Kazuya, as well
  • The power of language to shape when, how, and to whom we do violence
  • How it’s a massive (and understandable) dick move to ask someone to explode you without being honest at all times about what you are doing
  • Never trust a war profiteer.  Ever.  Fictional or real.  They are not likely to do good things.
  • Oh, yeah, and how Our Hero is directly responsible for a man’s death

All this and more on this particularly-thinky episode of the UnKamenCast RX!

You know; FOR KIDS.  (Actually, there’s a level at which talking about this sort of thing is very healthy and a lot to be said about the potentially damaging effects of violence without consequence…)

Laser Knees 59 – We’re Made of Star Stuff

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.
― Carl Sagan, Cosmos

And so ends the main series of Uchuu Sentai Kyuuranger/Space Sentai Kyuuranger/Space Squadron Nineranger/however else one might spell or translate it.

It likely comes as no surprise that your hosts are a little emotional about these episodes.  Especially since one was basically watching all our favorites die tragic deaths as part of a magic-based suicide plan to resurrect the love in the universe before giving us a good Don Armage for two seconds before taking us to “…and they lived happily ever after”.

We have some notes for these episodes and the series overall, but by and large, your hosts are gonna miss these good space kids.

Topics under discussion:

  • When Mouri Nobuhiro was into a story, he wrote the HELL out of it.
  • Shibasaki Takayuki is a good director generally, but in these episodes, he hit it out of the park.
  • Boukenger comes up a few times.  Once, Aleph even brings it up first.  Shocking, we know.
  • We somehow came around on Lucky and agree that he’s finally earned the right to have us cheer when he surfs in on a meteor.
  • We never quite came around on Tsurugi.  Just.  Nah.  He’s still less than great.
  • It’s “nice” that the person who got the fewest focus episodes was Spada instead of either of the ladies.
  • Raptor didn’t get enough episodes, but we hope her and Spada are happy together.
  • Hammy could have used more episodes, but at least she got to bust on someone again.
  • Xiao is one of the more fun extra heroes in a while.
  • We’re happy we didn’t see Kotaro die.
  • Garu, however, got a shockingly brutal death.  We’re glad he got to be with his boyfriend at the end of the show.
  • Champ, as ever, lives up to his name.
  • Balance was so perfectly Balance.
  • Naga remains Aleph’s favorite.
  • Stinger remains Sono’s favorite.

This episode was so full of #feels™ we didn’t even have a chance to talk about the hand-off to Lupinranger vs. Patoranger!

UnKamen RX 191 – Questions Without Answers

In this episode of the UnKamenCast RX, the Hokuto Three continue to be an excellent addition to the cast who are absolutely going to die tragically while your hosts continue to get up to all kinds of things, such as:

  • Talking about how celebrities generally and idols in particular are, in fact, people.
  • Expounding on the idea that the bad guy who has something to gain is maybe not the person to listen to.
  • Exploring how stories convey their morality.
  • Being excited about Utsumi’s return
  • Thinking on the ubiquity of cyborgs in the modern day
  • Reveal the best times to disown your child (spoiler: after they start a needless war for no good reason)
  • Continue to wonder if this show will ever even tap the brakes.
  • And reveal that our biggest problem is that the show keeps giving us feelings about things.

All this and more on this episode of The UnKamen Cast R! X!!!

Laser Knees 58 – You’re a Phoenix, You Idiot.

We aren’t Ohtori Tsurugi’s biggest fans, is the thing.

In this episode, we talk a bit about that, as well as:

  • Ponder just what kind of phoenix Tsurugi is meant to represent
  • Consider how best to repaint an already-bad suit.
  • Admit that Aleph was confused as to whether or not this was suddenly going to be the last episode.
  • Confess a narrative beat that stabs straight at Sono’s heart.
  • Point out how relevant some of the story beats are to the zeitgeist.

UnKamen RX! 190 – What is it Good For? (Absolutely Nothin’!)

(War!)
Ain’t nothin’ but a heartbreaker!
(War!)
Friend only to the undertaker!

Edwin Starr’s War is a very good song and contains a question it’s hard not to ask: what is it good for?

(The answer is, of course, making money and stroking egos)

In this episode:

  • Aleph gets grossed out by the Sclash suits/Gel Riders
  • Sono wants to know why Sawa still isn’t in the opening
  • Otoya’s back (all right!)!
  • And Mutou Shogo maybe could stand to turn it down a little?

It’s a belated and angsty Holiday Season with your favorite Super Sentai thoughts-havers!

In this episode:

  • Toei continues to give their protagonists colossally terrible presents.
  • Aleph tries to force a joke after a cross-linguistic pun via The Adventure Zone
  • Sono is ooged out by Hammy’s “mature” presentation
  • Lucky’s catchphrase finally lands
  • And more!

Rider Jump 20 – Opening Countdown!

At the start of the new year, the Toei tokusatsu shows are on break, but we at the ToH(!!!) network aren’t!

In this episode, your friendly(?) hosts decide to steal from a couple other podcasts (such as HARK!) to rank the opening themes of the post-2000 Kamen Rider and Super Sentai in this, the Opening Countdown!

In this episode:

  • We’re just wingin’ it.  Seriously, there’s a frightful lack of preparation.
  • Sono and Aleph butt heads over the #1 spots
  • Aleph can’t believe how Surprise Drive ranks.
  • Sono can’t believe what an experience the Timeranger theme is.
  • Psychic Lover: great band name or GREATEST band name?
  • Favored tokusatsu-related aggro reaction gifs.
