Patients

Emu Houjou starts off as the patient in episode 19, thanks to his inexplicable survival after Kuroto Dan though he would kill him via Bugster Virus Breakout.

Mai Yamato is a traditional dancer possessed by the Gatton Bugster from Gekitotsu Robots who is making her do The Robot

Daisuke was the patient in episode 20. He’s possessed by the Bugster Vernier from Jet Combat… and ensnared by the sexism via females around him. Mr. Takahashi Yuya, what was all that about?! Why would you write this, you have treated Asuna and Nico co well so far.

Again, this show pairing Saiba Nico with Hanaya Taiga has done so much for his character. It makes him better and we get another cool person in Nico to make the show better

Think Pieces

The true nature of the duality between Dan and Emu, Palad and M, N and M, Bugsters/Artificial Life and Humans is all very interesting and the near interchangeability between them all is fun to think about. There are so many connection between the individuals and factions and so many pairings that can be made to compare and contrast them all, it makes for a really rich experience even after an episode is over.

Most of us here at the TOH Network were ready to drop Ex-Aid, but it really has turned out to be an interesting show.

7-Ex-Aid-19-Nico-Taiga-M7-Ex-Aid-19-Nico-Taiga-Bugster lore7-Ex-Aid-19-M-hole-27-Ex-Aid-20-Hiiro-M-hole-37-Ex-Aid-20-Hiiro-M-hole-4

Kuroto Dan created Parad and the Bugsters, but her claims he is working to fulfill Palad’s wish. Previously Dan had said that he knows the Bugsters inside and out and he had shaped them as their creator. That feels like a strange snake eating it’s own tail set up, but as a viewer, isn’t it exciting to see unfold?

Black Holes – Parts of Kyuranger that Suck

03
  • SONO: My biggest problem is that I can’t pick a favorite from these beautiful kids. This was not a problem I was expecting. I love all of them too much. I mean I know it’s not Lucky, but otherwise it’s hard to say at this point, even with my very clear biases.
    • ALEPH: It REALLY is a shame kid’s there just throwing off everyone’s groove, isn’t it?  ‘Cuz everyone else is actually interesting and then Lucky’s just yelling catchphrases, trying to be an interesting character through sheer volume, but it’s just NOT happening.
  • SONO: So as much as I’m super interested in what they’re going to do with Stinger, why is the scorpion always a villain? Why do they always have to be the bad guy? I know it’s not going to last, and all of my favorite scorpions  also have these really interesting stories behind why they are who they are, and I can’t wait for his… But I just want a nice mom scorpion for once.
    • ALEPH: All I can think is that it comes back to the old story of the fox and the scorpion where it’s not even that the scorpion’s bad, just… well, it’s a scorpion.  It stings things.  It’s a bummer.
  • SONO: Xiao Longbao could use a few more moments where he’s kind of serious to balance him out a bit since he’s apparently leading this rebellion, but he’s only just gotten here so we’ll see I guess.
    • SONO: Also I can’t decide if I like or dislike them just dumping all of the extras out on the table like “HERE YOU GO! HAVE FUN WITH THE NEW TOYS!” I mean it saves a lot of time to do this instead of devoting time to searching for them but at the same time it feels a little lazy?
      • ALEPH: Yeah, they’ve not yet got the balance right with him.  On the other hand, I think he’s great, so at least for the moment, LaserKnees leans toward the pro-Xiao Longbao side.
04

SONO:

  • I’m not 100% on how I feel about the show bringing us back to Earth and making it such a big battlefield with some kind of weird secret. It was so cool how large the scale of this show was and how far we were going from home, and now we’re just… back…
  • Again, super frustrated at Lucky interrupting us building up some background on Sparda. He knows about Raptor’s desire to fight, but seems really oblivious as to why she’s acting the way she is. And I still don’t get why he’s so over-protective, especially since he seems supportive when he first stumbles across her thinking about it? Was he the first one to join the team? Did she have to try to help before they could Hammy and Champ and she got damaged? (Thus his line “there will be times when we can’t protect her”?) We had plenty of time in this episode to explore all of this, but instead Lucky just yelled at everyone and made all of the decisions himself.

ALEPH:

  • I know that Lucky’s supposed to be the sweet, blunt, common-sense guy, but can’t the guy whose job is to get things Just Right have a little more of a chance to do that?  All I could think about was, like, Gastro-Pubs, where they take these otherwise bizarre combinations of foods and turn them into amazeballs meals by just combining them in new and uncommon ways, so dude could just come to the realization on his own?  Or just have her get in his grill and tell him that, hey, maybe don’t try and reduce other sapient beings to functions.
  • Basically, Lucky didn’t need to be here.
  • But to sorta get back to the show itself: we had a thing where we’re reintroducing the crew from Episode 1, right?  Getting that team together and having a reason why they can only have so many people at a time is neat, but we don’t really talk at all about the dynamic of the team, just everyone falling in line behind Lucky and… Man, I dunno.  I’m not saying I want STRIFE, exactly, but maybe a bit more about how there are some established groups inside this thing, like Balance and Naga, or Lucky and Garu, or even the Hammy, Spada, and Champ trio.

Shooting Stars – The Bits of Kyuranger that Shine

03

SONO:

  • I’m glad we at least set up a kind of major short-term goal. Stop Jark Matter from draining the life energy of planets. That’s a nice little anchor thing to get us from place to place.
  • It’s nice that they set these episodes up not only to introduce Stinger and make Raptor AquilaPink, but also built up Champ and Sparda a bit. I’m hoping we keep to that sort of pattern and work on consistently developing everyone to keep us moving at a good pace.
  • Scorpio Voyager is so cute.

ALEPH:

  • I just wanna reiterate that I dig on Xiao Longbao and for all he could wear on me if they don’t keep the balance right, dude is at least a welcome shot of charisma that aaaaaalmost balances out Lucky screaming all the time.
  • I like that while Stinger’s being the moody Kyuuranger, we’re also not doing the “oh, is he gonna go bad?  Who knoooooooooows?!” thing.  They’ve pulled the trigger: he’s a jerk.  Right out the gate.  No questions, no suspense, just him.  Bein’ a jerk.  So with that part out of the way, we can just bring him into the good-guy fold and have that be the driving thing.
  • Speaking of robots (or, y’know, mechanical lifeforms), I just dig that Balance takes a sec to point out that there’s a difference and that maybe we could spend some time talking about the relationships between mechanical people and people who get built to serve a purpose.  Of course, some aspects of that get covered in four, so let’s hop right into that, shall we?
04

SONO:

  • Raptor writes self-insert fanfic about her being a Kyuuranger and a hero of the rebellion. And she wants to do the Sailor Moon line and pose. She is too pure and good for all of us and we are not worthy.
  • I do love that Xiao just seems to want to dance all the time. It’s kind of weird and endearing. I just wish between little dances he got more serious sometimes.
  • There’s something really nice in Raptor wanting to help fight, but believing she’s supposed to be a certain way and do certain things because that’s what she was built for, and then being able to break from that to follow her dream. It’s a little more subtle than I generally expect from Sentai trying to make a lesson for kids, but it’s nice. And I’m glad one of our girls got to have it.

ALEPH:

  • I like that we used this point in time to talk about how the stuff that powers the globes isn’t infinite.  It’s a clear way to give the crew a break ‘cuz actually having nine heroes on camera at all times is a logistical nightmare, but it’s also a neat idea to set up so that later on, there can be, like, brownouts or times when the heroes can’t transform, or are on a time limit or something.  It’s not interesting on its own, but DANG the potential is there.
  • And, okay, small thing?  I like that we’re just being done with the whole “get the band together” thing nice and quick.  Like, okay, we still have to turn Stinger around, but we know where he is and what he’s doin’ and why he’s gonna be around.  Everyone’s a Kyuuranger, we just have to find the chemistry to make it go.

This team consists of one Android, Robots and Mechanical. All three of those “beings” coexisting is really neat and creates a lot of story potential. [To be pedantic, Androids and Robots are different IRL, but in the show Champ acts as-if he is an Android, not a Robot.]

Glitches

Sono/Aleph
17
  • SONO: Okay first of all, how dare they kill this beautiful burger son?
  • SONO: I hate to admit it but the lack of an OP is starting to wear on me. I appreciate that they want to use all the time they have to the best they can by cutting out the opening and just having the end credits over the action, but just… I don’t know… It feels weird to just have it happening episode after episode.
  • ALEPH: I feel like it must be a thing where they’re trying to talk about other kinds of games but also wanna keep up the feeling that this is a dangerous world or something?  All I know is that, as I already said, I’m a sucker for precious robots who are willing to die for the sake of their friends so this felt like a very personal attack.
18
  • ALEPH: Honestly, rewatching 18 before we got recording this makes me think that the feeling of padding and relative ephemerality is a VERY likely source of the discomfort you were talking about because it really does feel like a whole mess of ZOMG BETRAYAL and fights wrapped around a thin skeleton of just plot machinations that lead up to a really good moment.  But the ride there is just a lot of fighting.
  • ALEPH: And, look, it’s not like I don’t love me a fight, it’s just that the emotional stakes of the fights don’t feel really well-presented, giving them a feeling of, loath as I am to say it, trying to make us excited for some stuff that’s just plain not gonna happen for a while instead of just leaving it to little vignettes.  Little bits and pieces can be frustrating, but it’s peanuts compared to building whole big fights around it.
  • SONO: It was all just so much all at once. I  mean being efficient with time is one thing but tell maybe 2 people’s stories at a time instead of like… 5 people’s. Just dial it back a bit. Especially if you’re keeping the whole 3 extra minutes every episode.
  • ALEPH: Even in a franchise rife with clunky intros of new toys, I can’t help feeling like the one with Taddle Fantasy/Brave’s next power-up was a bit forced.  I can’t help feeling like it was there to give them more stuff to work with so the episode wouldn’t be short on time.
  • SONO: It was definitely a moment of “Okay so in like 2-3 weeks, this is going to the other side so that these two aren’t spending all their time at level 1 fighting level 50 dudes. Cool.”

Power-Ups

Sono/Aleph
17
  • SONO: I didn’t expect a Burger Time episode. I don’t know why I didn’t, because I feel like I definitely should have. But here we are with this beautiful tale of a good man and his burger son.
    • ALEPH: Burgermon is too good for this fallen world.
  • SONO: Nico is a gift and a treasure, and this episode really kept building on her dynamic with Taiga and really playing with how they feed off of each other.
    • SONO: I love that Taiga was introduced to us with the idea of him becoming obsessed with the gaming side of this, but apparently he’s just the toxic man-boy call-of-duty gamer who doesn’t really know about other games, and having Nico, a young girl, rip into him on that. Feels good.
  • SONO: Whoops sorry Poppy and Burgmon basically making a JuJu Burger commercial was the cutest dang thing I’ve ever seen and I love it.
  • ALEPH: I want Burgermon to come back so bad, but never so much as when I imagine him and Poppy being Bugster BFFs.
18

SONO: Tsukuru has a couple of ladies on his dev team! Nice!

SONO: I do appreciate Dan shooting a guy full of disease and then just hanging out there waiting for the good guys to show up. Just sitting there with this biggest grin on his face like a huge freakin’ evil dork.

SONO: I really love just how much like… everyone on the good guy side cared about each other this episode? Nico running into make sure Taiga was alright, and Taiga insisting that he’s her doctor was all just really cute. I stand by that giving Taiga someone to actually care about is really helping his character.

ALEPH: And, hey, I know I was ripping on this ep a bit for feeling kinda padded out (I stand by it), but at least we got to see Dan doing some more Dr. Doom monologuing.  At any point in the show, dude’s like three seconds away from “BEHOLD!  MY DEATH RAY!” which really keeps me warmed up to that murderous so-and-so.

ALEPH: I really dug on the effects they used when Emu was losing his cohesion.  Recalls a lot of Riders (I went to Kiva, but there’s other stuff in there), while also being its own thing and also kind of shocking in its way, finding this really interesting way to illustrate a moment of existential crisis while building on a bunch of previously-established visual hooks.

Points of Concern

FROM AMMIT:

  1. There was a lot of emphatic editing in episode 18. How did y’all receive it?
  2. If you didn’t talk about this already, how did everyone lying to Emu work in these episodes.
  3. Given his actions over the course of Ex-Aid 17-18 where does Kuroto Dan stand with you?
  4. Kamen Rider Chronicle is a survival game where everyone becomes a Rider and has to fight to the death. There is a similarity to Gaim in this. What do you think about that?

Black Holes – Parts of Kyuranger that Suck

01/02

SONO:

  • I’d really love Lucky to just tone it down a bit. The Energetic Red is always nice, and he reminds me a lot of Ban, which is fun, but does he really need to be screaming “LUCKY~!” every 15 seconds?
  • We really need a Hammy episode as quickly as possible, because right now she feels so flat. I could probably say the same of Sparda and Champ, but like… They at least feel like they have something? Sparda likes to cook. Champ is a giant robot bull man. There’s stuff right there that I expect them to build on. Hammy… laughs at people a lot? For some reason? There’s really nothing there I can to latch on to. For a character that is so clearly playing to my biases, she’s the least interesting person in the first two episodes and it makes me want to scream.
  • I hate the ending song. That’s it I just hate it.

ALEPH:

  • For me, the weak link is Sparda.  He might have a hook you can hang a story or two on, but in suit or out, he just feels like a whole lotta nothin’.  Maybe it’s just that he’s supposed to be this really restrained counterpoint to Lucky’s none-restraint.
  • Small thing: I think with Garu, one of my problems going forward is gonna be that while he feels like he’s characterized as the grizzled old warrior who’s seen some stuff… like, y’all, he looks like someone’s angsty OC.  Again, that’s not to bust on the design, it’s just that when I see whimsical tattoos on a blue wolf with silver emo-hair and an angsty past, I think a bit more, like, teenager with a chip on his shoulder than gruff-voiced berserker.
  • Okay, probably my biggest complaint with these two is that I really hate the “Oh, I have superpowers and automatically understand how they work so I can be a super-hardcore-amazo-person?” sort of plot.  It’s just not a thing I dig on.  That said: I can handwave it away by reminding myself that they’ve got something like 50 episodes to do with 9 main characters, a probable extra character or two, plus villains, plus the commander, so they gotta get all the setup–characters, mechanics, basic toys, etc.–out of the way ASAP.  Still: it ain’t great.

Shooting Stars – The Bits of Kyuranger that Shine

01/02

SONO:

  • It’s pretty cool that we’re set entirely off earth. It gives the team a chance to really play with their settings instead of confining us to one city, and I like how they managed that within the first two episodes. Has sentai done this on such a large scale before? Dekaranger would travel to other planets every now and then, but was mostly localized? The Boukengers were going all over the Earth supposedly, but even that is a very scaled down version of what Kyuuranger is trying.
  • It took me a bit to come to where I really understood the suits, but after stopping on the final still of them in the opening, they’re a lot better than I thought when I first saw them bouncing around. I really appreciate the amount of detail that went into these. The glitter visors are fantastic. Garu is a wolf man, so his suit is a sort of velvet texture instead of spandex (ALEPH: I was gonna say someone sewed it with some blue carpet). Champ is a giant robot bull man, so his suit is more heavily armored. Dorado can stab a guy with his face. (In fact, in episode 2 he does, which means all of this was worth it.) Scoprion guy has a little tail which is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. This is thoughtful suit design, instead of just color swaps and slightly different helmets, and I’m so here for that.
  • Raptor is voiced by Mao, and it’s nice to have her come back in a role where I feel like I’ll probably like her a lot. I hope she gets to do a little face acting so I can associate her visually with someone other than Luka.

ALEPH:

  • Since we’re talking about songs, though?  I really dig on the opening theme.  It’s not ToQGer good, but it’s got some pep.
  • Okay, and because I think I could explode for hours on just the design this show’s got going for it, I also wanna throw out that one of my favorite things is how they’ve tried to unify everyone even out-of-suit with the team jackets, but they found a couple places where there’s some character-revealing novelty to how they did it while also breaking up how everyone looks out-of-suit:  Balance gets a new paintjob, showing that he’s just way too into being a robo-nudist, and then Champ just clearly showed up at the Satellite of Love as the black Kyuuranger and they had jackets from S to maaaaaybe 2XL and just as someone’s offering to make him a bigger one, he just rolls his eyes, tosses it over his shoulder like a cape and is adamant that he’s ready now.
  • Also, in these two episodes, I kinda love the big bad monster.  Also, the footsoldiers are just gorgeous.
