  • SONO: So here we encounter another one of those issues where the movie is very very canon, and it’s always a thing I’m not totally into. I mean at least here, they’re giving complete context for it, so it’s not like there’s any point on which we’re left guessing. It’s just treated as an event in this world’s history that Dan has to explain, and they build it into Emu’s story well enough with his conversation with Hiiro later, but I’m not sure where it fits into anything Kiriya learned about, or how Dan and Genm tie into it. For this being the thing Kiriya was killed for, it sure doesn’t feel like something he found out.
  • ALEPH: It’s probably just me being really, really petty, but it’s a thing that’s upset me since Faiz’s first episode and ever since: don’t show me the lady putting on the Rider belt if she’s not gonna transform.  I know, I know, I know.  There are a lot of really good in-story reasons and it’s not meant as this frustrating THING, I know there’s a lot of real, honest, fair-play stuff going on.
16
  • SONO: So after both 15 and 16, I still… don’t really understand why Hiiro and Taiga are attacking Emu the way they are. They’re both acting on some level of concern for him. They want to save him from the virus. They want to remove the Bugster from him and destroy it. But instead of telling him and getting it out the normal way, they just want to beat him up? It feels a lot weirder in 15 than 16 but it’s not structured well in general.
  • SONO: Poppy was a little wound up in the beginning of this episode and I need it to calm down again.
  • ALEPH: I just need them to tone down the physical comedy for a little.  I know it’s one of those things you just give to the target audience and that Rider is lowering its target audience age-range a bit as time goes on, but eeeeesh.

Power-Ups

Sono/Aleph
15
  • SONO: Why are Taiga and Nico such a joy to watch? Why is watching this grown man having no idea how to handle this teenager so hilarious? There’s something so deeply entertaining about watching Taiga try to act like he has authority and end up totally ignored.
  • SONO: Also Taiga you moron don’t just leave your belt and magic video games sitting around. It’s a miracle they weren’t stolen before now if you just leave them out on the table. You know there’s a zombie man trying to kill you, right?
  • ALEPH: More than anything, tho, I just liked that Nico, like Yuuki in Fourze, has clearly planned out a henshin pose and ganked his belt to make it happen.
  • ALEPH: Also, for all I complained about it?  The way they showed the consequences of someone without the compatibility surgery OR, apparently, an extant Bugster infection trying to put on the belt.  Explains a bit about what sets our heroes apart from everyone else and gives a nice bit of implicit lore-building, which I am all about.
16
  • SONO: Nico redecorating CR was really cute and funny. Where did she get all of this stuff though? Did she really have it all in her suitcase?
    • ALEPH: Clearly, she goes to Ama No Gawa High and swiped it from Mr. Kisaragi’s class.
  • SONO: The bit with this ep where we’re wondering if Emu should break off from being Nico’s doctor because she hates him for reasons he doesn’t understand is really good.  The answer is “yes, of course”, but still, it’s a good thing to look into.
  • SONO: The discussion between Dan and Palad about what their individual goals are was a great scene. They’re working together but they sure don’t like each other. The two of them play off of each other so well, and the balance between Palad constantly moving, constantly being in these positions that just don’t work for normal conversation while Dan just stands completely still, was some real nice visual stuff that really showcases them.
  • ALEPH: I also really dig how they contrast it in the very next scene with Hiiro and Emu, leading into more stuff with the Bugster wanting to have Emu’s back.  The whole thing where Emu’s totally unable to hurt the Bugster as if they were on his team was clever in 15 and hearing the gun-Bugster (I don’t care what his name is) explain why this is all agoing on was such a really fun thing.
  • ALEPH: Also?  Really love the bit where Dan plays Henshin Interruptus with Our Heroes.  “I won’t let you level up”?  I always dig on the baddies using the mechanics of a thing against the heroes

Points of Concern

FROM AMMIT:

  1. I didn’t want to point this out when we first talked about Ex-Aid, but do you think the redness under Emu’s eyes was a hint from the make-up department and or the head director or even the writer that he should kind of look sick or at the very least, less than optimally healthy. Do you think that could be a real thing. Everyone else looks healthy, but he has that redness. I just looked him up from some appearances before Ex-Aid and he looks fresh, not like in the debut. I think as he has been using the Game Driver, he has been looking better. Taiga and Hiiro point out that there is a personality shift in Emu and we have noted it in the past, so why not a physical change as well? Attached are images of Emu from the debut before he used the Game Driver and one from episode 2 right after he got it. Maybe it is just lighting? Thoughts?
  2. TWO episodes without an opening in a week! How do you think they did that?
  3. Hold the BANG-Banging phone, how was Saiba Niko unable to use the Game Driver, given that she has the Bugster Virus… which is exactly HOW Emu was able to use the Game Driver. If you haven’t already discussed that, what are your thoughts on that seeming contradiction?

Because we’re covering the final three episodes, we’re shaking up the format a bit and knocking out our Instincts and Evolutions segments. We’re going to charge through our Hackles and Tide Turners, and then cover our overall thoughts on the ending and Zyuohger itself in our Quick Reflexes!

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono 46
  • Ticked about Azald smacking Naria. It was awful, and also like come on he’s like the only one who’s been cool to her. Don’t take that away.
Ammit 46

  • Azald slapping Naria really made me want to see him thrown into the sun.
  • I’m not sure how I feel about all this last-minute emotional manipulation between the doctor Kazakiri, Yamato and Bard. The Feels are reals, I mean it is emotionally affecting to me, but I’m not sure I like it. I feel as if I’ve been intellectually betrayed.
  • It looked like Amu was going be the one who got to use the Zyuoh Whale Cube-gun, but it turns out it was Tusk handling it after her and then it got passed on.

Aleph 46
  • Smacking Naria was awful on its own and also?  The only reason I cared that Super-Azald bought it because… I mean, it was a neat realization and a use of Yamato’s quick-thinking and vision and wev, but I barely cared about Super-Azald to begin with and him dying did NOT have the punch they seemed to want it to have.  I’m more than a little sure we talked about this last time, but HODANG did the haphazard pacing really take the wind out of that moment’s sails.
Sono 47
  • I’m gonna have some praises of the scene with Yamato and his dad in a minute, because the scene was like 80% satisfying, but I’m a little disappointed that Yamato apologized first. Having Yamato remember his mother telling him that everything in the world, especially their family, will always be connected in the middle of the argument and then stopping short on his totally valid argument and deciding to apologize felt very weird and forced. If his dad apologized first in response to his grievance, then from that Yamato remembered his mom’s last words and THEN had the revelation and apologized in response I’d feel a lot better about it all.
  • How did that terrible robot pull down the Sagittariark? It has no hands.
  • Also it’s great (see also: not great at all) wanting to punch Leo in the mouth right until the 11th hour.
Ammit 47
  • Genis’ last game feels a bit lazy
  • Genis was the last thing on Naria’s mind. Poor lady.
Aleph 47
  • I think I’m just gonna be a pillar of salt about Naria’s treatment overall in this show.  We kept getting SO CLOSE to finding stuff out about her or at least giving her a single relationship that was in any way recognizable, but NOPE.
  • I can’t help thinking that (take a drink) a better-paced show would have ended the episode on the bonkers “totally separate our worlds” plan so that there could have been even a smidgen of suspense about whether or not Our Heroes would go with it or not.
Sono 48
  • Naria’s death was some bunk and she deserves better.
  • Genis being a literal virus should have been a bigger thing in this show because that’s a crazy cool concept and I wish instead of hiding it he’d totally owned it. A virus is ever evolving, ever growing stronger. If he’d been on top of that, and just been absorbing things throughout the show to create “immunities” in himself against the Zyuohgers, that would have been rad.
  • How did Naria never know about Genis though? She’s literally throwing his physical cells into other beings every week. Why is this a surprise to her?
Ammit 48
  • Genis kills her for showing compassion
  • The show has finally gotten back to or two for the first time that gamer negative mentality that we had originally imagined that it would be all about.
  • I don’t think this is superficial, but tell me if it is. I was put off by the transformation scene where they were not wearing their helmets and their faces were all scuffed and bloody and bruised. It just felt off to me and it seemed play less well than other Transformations like that, but I don’t remember if the other ones in the pass with the faces as messed up or not.
Aleph 48
  • I just really wanted all the good ideas they put out here to land. They didn’t.
  • Like, that bit where Misao is all “The Earth accepts me?!”  That bit was good, but it could have been gorram transcendent if at any point we’d talked about how he got to the place where he thinks he’s so bad that the power of the planet despises him.  We could’ve talked about that even once, but instead it was just “lol, you’ve been horrifically traumatized!”

Tide Turners – Some Enjoyable bits from this stretch of Zyuohger

Sono 46
  • Yeah, so I kind of love Amu just totally losing it on Yamato. It’s good to see Amu get so frustrated about this. It feels so much like Amu has had major losses before, that she has regrets,  and that she’s annoyed Yamato would make the same dumb mistakes she did when everyone else doesn’t have family to turn to. I mean this would be even better if they actually gave us more information on Amu to back up her outburst, but this is the end of the show and I’m taking what I can get.
  • It was pretty cool how they tied Yamato, Bard, and Yamato’s father together. I mean, again, it’s a little late but narratively it was a nice little bit that digs into that idea of connections.
  • The shots of Yamato inside the suit fighting were cool.
Ammit 46
  • Naria gloating over Azald being trapped in the Bloodgame was nice for her. She’s bad, but she has charm and style.
  • Tusk, not Leo is de facto leader when Yamato is absent.
  • When Yamato shifted to Zyuoh Whale offscreen the cut of beef helmet for the suit and the acting of the person in the suit was so superb. That look of absolutely cold Ire was beautiful and I loved it.
Aleph 46
  • I feel like you guys covered most of the bases in this’n.  Feel bad but I hit a lot of the same fave moments.
Sono 47
  • Firing the Sagittariark was SICK.
  • Gonna mostly talk about that scene with Yamato and his dad here, since that was really the big focus of 47, specifically about the fact that we have an open verbal acknowledgement of wrong-doing and an apology. Like I said, a little miffed that Yamato had to apologize first, but at least it’s a step in the right direction comparatively.
  • But Yamato’s whole statement to his father, that whether or not he would have understood — And he probably could have. Kids aren’t stupid. — he’d still wanted to and deserved to at least be told. His father never tried to connect to him and that’s where the core of his anger is. It was SUPER solid and it felt really good to see. The scene itself felt very Pro-Yamato (and as such, very Pro-”Talk To Your Freaking Child”) and very in the spirit of why Yamato is and what the show is about, and I can get behind that.
Ammit 47
  • Right on Creatives for having Yamato tell his dad how he had needed him AND for Dr. Kazakiri actually APOLOGIZING.
Aleph 47
    • [RE: the apology from Dr. Kazakiri] For serious and for true, that conversation was so good.  Especially given how much the show seems like it wanted that to be a massive part of what it was and what it was about.  I know we commented on it before, but just this thing where you can actually–with adult’s eyes– see where Dr. Kazakiri’s coming from is really good and creates this space of intense maturity that lets Zyuohger’s highs stand head and shoulders above a lot of other Sentai series.
  • I know I complained about the implementation of it, but look: the sorta nuclear-option plan to use the Zyuoh Whale gun to hide Earth to protect it?  That was a neat plan and I really dug on it AND how it forces Our Heroes to lean on how much they believe in the power of connection, which is a thing I really need from my Sentai.
Sono 48
  • The Link Cube deciding “Haha nah my guys EVERYBODY PARTY TOGETHER” is maybe my favorite thing in this whole show. It was cute and unexpected and very in the spirit of what Zyuohger wanted to be about. And there was just something delightful and charming in it happening and everyone’s reaction to it being “What just happened this was not what we were trying to do OH WELL I GUESS THIS IS OUR LIFE NOW.” It was sweet watching everyone reunite with their families and getting to see Lari and Misao acting to get everyone together on a large scale was really wonderful.
Ammit 48
  • Naria taking on the Zyuohgers at Kaiju size made me happy.
  • The Earth accepting Misao and rejecting Genis as a punctuation to illustrate the difference between them despite their underlying similarities is so beautiful!
Aleph 48
  • The whole last bit with Yamato and the Zyulanders chillin’ and then inviting over the sad kid with the banged-up elbow?  Loved that bit.  Honestly, seeing all the stuff where folks were connecting and reconnecting?  I kinda wish they could’ve made a whole episode dedicated to that.
  • Also, noticed that OverTime translated the animal grouping as a “tribe”, aka a human grouping, which was clever, I thought.
Fun Facts & Miscellaneous

I’m sure this cute notion has featured in a dozens of forms of media, but a favorie of mine is Genbu from the second arc of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime.

Yamato and the Zyuohgers staking the moral high-ground against Genis is nice and really well-formed here. Too bad it wasn’t more solidly founded throughout the series…

4-zyuohger48-yamato-moral-highground-a4-zyuohger48-yamato-moral-highground-b

Genis and Naria turning the Zyuohger’s line and anatomy against them was a lot of fun. It made me think about the phrase “Turnabout is fair play.”

5-zyuohger47-genis-turnabout-is-fairplay5-zyuohger47-naria-taunt

Junko Komura really did a good job working some complex and nuances ideas into the last episode. (Get ready to take a shot, if you’re playing along at home.) Too bad these ideas weren’t spread throught the last bit of the show, oreven over the whole thing.

5-zyuohger48-yamato-sela-tusk-a5-zyuohger48-yamato-sela-tusk-b5-zyuohger48-yamato-sela-tusk-c

I feel a tiny bit bad for Genis because he is such a broken person, but the whole “King of the Net Trolls” idea is so cool and it is strangely cathartic to me (Ammit) to watch him get shut down by these good hearted people who are trying to live that #ConnectedLife. It is so satisfying. But for reals, people like him need help and love, but it’s hard to reach out to someone who refuses to examine themselves with integrity and lashes out at those who will correctly identify them for their strengths and weaknesses.

  • SONO: My heart feels for Asuna. She’s trying so hard and she just gets ignored. I thought the pink nurse dress was cute. The poor girl just wants some praise. She’s trying really hard, and everyone just kind of ignoring her or shutting down her enthusiasm is starting to wear on me. Someone please show this girl some attention and love.
    • ALEPH: Yeah.  It’s one of those things where–and I know I keep harping on it–but once you know Ohmori’s on-staff, it’s hard not to really drop a lot of stuff like this at his feet.  Poppy/Asuna is a really fun character and while I get the show’s sense of humor, dang it’s hard to see her getting treated so badly so often.
14

Sono

  • Taking Kiriya out of the opening was a knife to my heart, Ex-Aid. A knife to my heart.
  • Okay this is 800% not how medical blood samples work. Okay sure he’s using the magic kamen rider stethoscope to analyze it, and maybe I could let it go on that, but I’m pretty sure you cannot accurately diagnose someone on a sample that small wiped onto a non-sterile tissue.
    • ALEPH: I want to No-Prize this so hard, but also I hate baseless speculation when it’s just one of those leaps of logic I need to go with, but yeah.  Yeah, that’s irksome to me.  I’ve had bloodwork done.  That is not the sample size ANYONE took.  Oh, if only.

Aleph

  • There’s no sign that Niko is a heroic, antiheroic, or otherwise independent Bugster.  Boo on that fact.  There’s time yet, but… it’s not looking likely.

Power-Ups

Sono/Aleph
13
  • SONO: The degree to with Dan is just skyrocketing himself toward Dr. Doom levels of villainy is maybe one of my favorite things about this show. I still want to punch the guy for taking away my other favorite thing about this show, but man he’s a fun bad guy.
    • ALEPH: I really hate to be nothing but “I KNOW RIGHT” but… I KNOW, RIGHT?  He’s just so massively full of himself and clearly has reason to be and it’s great.
  • SONO: I also just really appreciate them tossing the whole secret identity thing out the window. It never makes a whole lot of sense, and for something this big and public, making it ACTUALLY PUBLIC this early, instead of dragging it out the way Drive did, will at least keep that loose end out of the way.
    • ALEPH: And on top of that, not trying to play it one way or another.  Like, we don’t really know how the rest of society reacts to the knowledge that there are neon-colored superheroes fighting a video game disease that feeds on your anxieties, but they leave most of it to the side because, look: it’s not actually that important one way or another.  PR for the ministry of health is not Emu’s job.  His world is small and specialized.  He’s a… Kamen Rider.
  • SONO: Holy crud Genm’s zombie horde is really cool and absolutely horrifying.
  • SONO: Niko messing with Taiga brings me such intense joy. I feel like I’ve mentioned this but god its just makes me so happy to watch. Also Taiga gets really angry when she calls him out on how thoroughly he examined her for the game illness. Kid doesn’t want to admit he still really cares and is affected by what happened at Zero Day. It’s nice to see some actual character building on him for once.
    • ALEPH: For all I remain frustrated that, apparently, Kiriya had to bite it to spark all these bits where suddenly the two biggest louts in the series were suddenly kinda alright while also not contradicting anything from before.  It’s a really well-done bit of writing/directing.
Sono/Aleph
14
  • SONO: I love this dumb Mario and Luigi form and honestly I’m not even sorry about it. It’s a really cool idea, and is really driving home the split between M and Emu, which is just becoming wider by the episode. Even if Ex-Aid has some dumb suits, at least it’s form gimmicks seem to be heading in really neat directions.
    • ALEPH: I think that’s the thing I’m ultimately going to love most about the show, being honest.  Because they took this thing where there’s two sides to him, then just totally literalized by the powerup and I haven’t had much of a rant yet in THIS series about loving how well they tell a story just with the powerups, but this is one of the best ones.  One dude who wears powerups gets a powerup and turns into his bifurcated self–the brash, hot-headed Momotar–I mean gamer, the other a chill and calculating doctor–and they’re so night-and-day, they even use different reflexive pronouns, which is just GREAT.
      • ALEPH: Also, taking money that the blue one is revealed to be the Bugster.  Actually I’m not, I don’t have money.  But I will gladly take yours, dear listener, whether or not I’m right.
        • SONO: Yeah that was something a friend brought up to me; that “M” the clever fiery gamer is the human and the more cautious, thoughtful “Emu” is the Bugster. I’m willing to leave it open right now because I want to see where this is going and not dig my heels into any one thing in particular but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was right.
          • ALEPH: I think that’s actually for the best.  I know it’s a thing where nerds (like me) get all het up about an idea and wanna show their work, but I’d be happy either way.
  • SONO: I’m in on Hiiro’s ethics of not forcing a patient to have a surgery. I mean I can see where Emu, the big hearted hero, is coming from. If you can save someone, why wouldn’t you? And I know in the context of the show the game virus and bugster are real, but like… Kids know it’s not real. Cancer is real, and it’s devastating. And this guy has the right to make his own decisions about his life. Even if Shirakawa wants the surgery, Hiiro won’t do it just on Emu’s asking. Shirakawa has to say it. “It’s not up to the doctors to decide.” This show continues it’s hard stance on doctor’s not playing god and deciding who lives or dies and I’m into it.
    • ALEPH: Seriously, it is SO good.  I’m gonna keep harping on this, but the amount to which this series wants to talk about medical ethics–and, honestly, ethics of agency generally–puts such a smile on my face.  Even Ghost, with all its laudable things, didn’t quite touch on this aspect of life in a way quite this powerful.  ‘Cuz it’s one thing to save someone from a thing like a supervillain or a mugger – that’s uncomplicated.  But CANCER?  Man, cancer’s… Whoof.  Good on ‘em for bringing this up and not doing the classic “he’s too stupid to know what he wants” or whatever thing and instead just talk to him like an adult and give Hiiro a chance to act like an adult about it all.  It’s great.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

  • SONO: ANOTHER clip show? What? Why? We already did one! Sure it was a little early but kids’ memories aren’t so bad that we need two. Are you guys running out of budget?
    • ALEPH: I have to imagine that’s a lot of it.  I often wonder if they didn’t have to hire on a ton of people to do rewrites or something or redo suits or something.  The possibility that they had to redo some stuff a bunch of times and pull some scripts from the slush pile would go a long way to explain how the series went the way it did.
      • I mean because otherwise it’s nonsense cuz this is supposed to be an anniversary series.  Why aren’t they pumping something into this?  Did the Gokaigers cost this much to get?
  • SONO: I mean I still refuse to believe Mario hasn’t known this whole time but sure okay. Also why doesn’t he recognize cube whale? They had him build a duplicate.

  • SONO: Look it’s that Amu thing. It’s just that whole thing.
  • ALEPH: Okay, honestly?  I really resent the whole “let’s bring in an even bigger villain” thing.  I have a lot of thoughts about wanting the baddies to be developed over time and for that development to happen parallel to the heroes.  This thing where Azald turns out to have always been this other dude the whole time is just so out of nowhere, even if it’s about Genis’ secret plan to… do… a thing?
    • SONO: I like the narrative standpoint but this plot has had all of 3 episodes devoted to it and yeah that’s a problem.
  • ALEPH: Seriously, I want to like Genis. He’s got a good design.  Or, well, he HAD a good design.  At least a design that didn’t feel too familiar in his weird slug-butt.  He’s got a good hook in that he’s Cosmic Daguva.  He’s got tons of powers, a sadistic streak, and all about just wrecking stuff.  But at the end, what’s he do?  Puts out two half-constructed plans and just watches them go and maybe they eventually get somewhere, I guess, sorta.  He’s supposed to read like this master planner and how this is all what TVTropes calls a Xanatos Gambit, but he doesn’t.  He’s just some jerk who’s protected by the storytelling engine of coincidence to have his plans work out in a way that seems big and impressive when, the moment you think about it for a second, it all falls apart.  His “menace” takes up space that could be used to explore villains who aren’t garbage.

Tide Turners – Some Enjoyable bits from this stretch of Zyuohger

Sono-44
  • Misao standing up to Leo and not taking guff from him was nice to see.
  • I know I’ve been saying it for a long time but Mario is a gift and a treasure and I’m so glad everyone loves and appreciates him so much. It’s so cute that they all just start actually calling him Zyuoh Human.
  • FINALLY someone consoles Misao over the actual horrifying trauma he endured.. Mario’s too good.
Sono-45
  • Bard being weakened by having shared his power with Yamato and not totally able to handle the suit is a really interesting plot turn that I wish had been a larger part of his show.
  • I’m super into Mario just throwing himself head-first into learning from the Zyumans about their culture and wanting to share that with them, but in a way that seems completely respectful. He says “Teach me what you want”, not trying to barge in on anything, but inviting them to bring what’s special to them to the life they’re living here.
  • So I was right about Azald. That’s pretty cool. I mean, again, it should have been a larger part of the plot of this show, but okay.
Aleph-44
  • I REALLY dig that they all seem to be taking him seriously.  Honestly, them just talking a bunch about what a decent fella Mario is just made me so happy.
  • [RE: Mario consoling Misao] Seriously.  I mean, we could put that back up into the ‘hackles’ section because it’s been so friggin’ long of the show just lulzin’ at him because some rando skinny kid with anxiety problems wasn’t able to just shrug off the effects of a mega-powerful space sadist.  I’m glad Mario, at least, is able to pull the show out of that pattern, but GEEZ.
Aleph-45
  • And for all I agree that you’ve got some legit beef with the Amu bits in this episode, I do have to say, I really liked that the writers are using her to help bring Yamato back around to having some kind of conversation with his dad.  Especially since in the flashback we see, for all Yamato’s mad about it, they still play it in a way where you can kinda see Dr. Kazakiri being just shellshocked about things.
  • Both the talks about how Yamato should talk to his dad really hit nicely for me.  I know we’re on different places with this, but they both made me smile if only because I like seeing folks have each others’ backs like that.
