Postmortem- Kamen Rider Ghost [Series Overview] -RX! 159

unKamenCast-RX!-Logo2016

On this special episode of the UnKamenCast RX, we’re pulling back from our usual close reading of episodes to discuss a whole series and, in the end, place its heart on a scale against the weight of a feather.  Will the heart of this most recently-departed Kamen Rider pass the test or do we cast it to the devourer?

Find out on this, our postmortem examination of Kamen Rider Ghost!

Overall Bones to Pick:

Ammit

If we really just get one… I have to go with the overall poor handling of Makoto’s personal plot. They put a lot of work into turning Alain and showing him change, but Makoto stayed so static that viewers can be forgiven for not noticing the subtle ways his character changes throughout all of Ghost. He was active from the 4th or 5th episode on and everything was played so long and so slowly with him that it feels severely lacking.

Sono

Takeru is literally never allowed to talk to another person about parents ever again. Good lord. That was an issue the show handled really poorly from beginning to end. It’s GOT a dude with a terrible dad as Rider #2, and still pushes this narrative of “Your parents always mean well and you should always love them.” which is super unhealthy.

Aleph

I’m gonna be the one who really wants to hammer on the pacing.  The first “season” or so was this pile of really dense done-in-ones that also worked hard to do Takeru’s 99 days in 99 real-world days and I friggin’ A-D-O-R-E-D it.  But then from episode 15 on, the density seemed to leave it and we started getting a lot more two-parters, and the two-parters just kept happening more and more as things went on, which made it harder to fit all the stuff they clearly wanted to fit into the show in any really satisfying ways.

Overall Woments

Ammit

The hug of redemption. It shouldn’t have vanished like it did after the first quarter because it is amazing and wonderful that Takeru used love and the ability to grasp the remnants of good will within hurting and possessed people to free them from their wish for death brought on by the vicissitudes of life manifested as mean spirited hoodies ghosts.

Sono

I love the coming together of faith and science and how both had advantages and disadvantages over the course of the show. One was never “more right”, and they used Akari and Onari’s initial opposition that grew into a really close deep friendship, possibly even more than they had with Takeru, as a great narrative metaphor for the concept.

Aleph

Speaking of narrative metaphors, how about the thing where this kid uses his soul to fight back against an army who considers the soul superfluous?  Glorious.  Just… pure poetry.  Again, I talk about the different kinds of subtlety you can do with superhero narratives and that right there is just SO friggin’ brilliant.  Not to mention being a great callback to some of the more classical Rider (or, broader, Ishinomori) motifs where it’s your human soul or the spirit of nature or something else that’s raw and real inside of you that resists being mechanized or being devoured by a system which views you as fuel?  So good.

Listener Generated Meditation

@swirrlyjiffy asked us a big question about how the unkamencrew is OK with Takeru being “chosen” but not with Shinnosuke from Drive being “chosen” that is just one of the things we’ll be discussing today as we really get into the good and bad of Ghost today.

Jo/@lazycocos asked: How would you respond to the assertion I’ve seen a lot that Ghost is either “a less good Wizard” (similar setup/themes but supposedly lacking in the charm or heart that Wizard had) or “a less good Fourze” (in terms of the messages of friendship and hope?)

I think the idea that Ghost is just about generic “positivity” or friendship is pretty ignorant as it ignores the show’s heavily Buddhism-influenced themes and mythos that Fourze didn’t have, but that doesn’t mean they were executed well.

GameraSith from Tumblr who runs The Journey of the Kaiju Samurai blog said:

For postmortem of Ghost. After Drive, I found myself wondering if I was needing a break from Rider for a year. Gladly, I was proven wrong by Ghost. I loved how the cast interacted with each other and all of the general themes worked for me. My main pleasure of the show comes from 2 things, Akari: after Drive’s woeful use of Kiriko, I was glad to see we got to have an intelligent and firecracker of a friend to Takeru… She used her scientific skills to help see and fight the Ganma and didnt become a damsel in distress for Takeru to save.. Grandma Fumi: any show that gets my 14 yr old twin son to say during The Heroic Tale of Alain that he misses her is a testament to the shows writing and cast to make us care for any of the characters on this show. While Ghost wasn’t perfect, I was very happy to watch this show and will miss Takeru and crew…

Toku-Viking shared some thoughts on Ghost: the suits are cool and the music was spot on.

Glitches

02
Sono
  • Who are these two sexy nurses carrying around Hiiro’s Rider Gear and are they really necessary? Are they really? And do you REALLY need one of them to crouch down and put the belt on for you? Please let that stop immediately. Or if he HAS to have Gary Oak cheerleaders for whatever reason, actually give them some personality. I really don’t want to dislike Hiiro, but it leaves a real bad taste in my mouth.
  • At the very end, they did a little bit of that skipping audio thing they did in Drive with the director talking about the apple pie and it was pretty mild, especially compared to how Drive used it, but it still makes me nervous and I hope they don’t amp it up.
03
Sono
  • Is tripping and falling on his face gonna be Emu’s like… “thing”? I”m not sure how to describe it as a trope, but he’s been doing it constantly to kind of show how not totally competent he is, I guess? It just sits a little weird with me. (ALEPH: Yeah, it DOES read very ‘Popular YA novel protagonist’, doesn’t it?)
  • The level 1 bugster was not even a clever design this time it was just a weird terracotta gun.
  • God even in level 1 Snipe is just… the worst. But man I hate his level 2 form. As much as I’m really interested in Taiga as a character, that suit is awful. It’s just the worst. Who thought this was a good idea?
02/03
Aleph
  • You are NOT alone in having a real big feeling of discomfort around Hiiro and his nurses, ESPECIALLY with the belt-attaching.  Like you were saying, it might be possible to make them work (heck, even if it’s just that half the time, he’s got two sexy male nurses) but it’s just… I mean, how about no.  Do not need ladies whose whole purpose is to make a dude look cool then, apparently, disappear into thin air.  If I find out they’re just his crew of personal vocaloids, I am gonna be frustrate.
  • And since I’m still mad at Hiiro, him messing with Asuna by evoking her vocaloid-itude so casually?  Not cool, dude.  Not cool.
03
  • Mostly, I was just REAL “whatever” on this villain design.  From the ugly gun to this generic “gun”-evoking baddie, it was not one of the better-looking monsters I’ve seen in a while.  Though, again, I will bring us back to Mighty No. 9 because I can’t help feeling that’s a reference to the gun-shaped baddie in that game, but that’s just me really attaching that game to this show.

Power-Ups

02
Sono
  • This is my first experience with the OP, and I am maybe a little bit in love with it. I didn’t expect such a Kabuto-esque opening sequence for this of all shows. The song feels really intense and makes me wonder just how hard this show will to end up going once the wheels really start turning.
  • For all that we have the mystery of Mall Goth EX-Aid, I kind of appreciate that it’s not totally obvious who he actually is. There’s a small handful of people that the show gives the normal cues to (In the OP the GENM president is shown in the out-of-suit lineup cuts but Not-Kai is shown contrasted with Emu just before Mall Goth Ex-Aid’s suit is in the OP against the other riders. But also Graphite has the same control screen on his arm that Mall Goth Ex-Aid does.) it feels like it could be any or maybe even all of them. It’s a nice departure from White Wizard and Proto-Drive, where even if it was supposed to be some kind of mystery, it never really was. Also Asuna’s joke about him being a pallet swap was great. His Level 1 form makes his entire existence worth it.
  • I love Emu’s little smile as he starts to transform. He’s got a lot of uncertainty as a medical intern, but one thing he knows he can do is play a game. He’s able to have confidence because he’s in his element and he knows he can help people this way. Taiga catching on to it in episode 3 was also nice. It makes it feel more real and not just something for us to catch as a viewer.
03
Sono
  • Having the kid be scared of doctors was actually a pretty neat set-up, and a nice play on how doctors are maybe not as great as Emu wants to believe.
  • Graphite and Taiga being so cordial toward each other, even though they’re clearly enemies has me kind of interested. They’re clearly ready to fight, but it’s very laid back and there’s some exchange of pleasantries, and Not-Kai is able to diffuse, or at least distract from, the situation pretty easily.
  • The joke about Bang Bang Shooting being stuck in “development hell” was pretty funny, and actually kind of a nice parallel to the sort of mental/professional purgatory that Taiga himself seems stuck in.
02
Aleph
  • Okay, speaking of Kuuga?  I was watching the first Blu-Ray subs Midnight Club is doing (they are so gorgeous holy dang) and realized that Godai’s motorcycle goggles and helmet look basically 100% like the mask of Ex-Aid, which just made me smile.
  • I just keep hoping that Hiiro’s love of sweets ends up being a thing where he’s attached desserts to the same sorts of feeling that Emu’s attached video games to.  If fluffy strawberry cake is for him what Mighty Action X is for Emu, maybe I will want that dude to leave the show less.
  • Asuna crawling out of the screen as a friendly version of Sadako from The Ring.
03
Aleph
  • Watching the opening, I just noticed for the first time that Emu does the Tron pose (which, come to think, is also Gentarou’s ‘turning into Fourze’ pose) just before the title pops up and I’m glad they’re making that reference.
  • Also? Still in love with Graphite’s little glitching-out effect.  Just needs to be said.
  • Kinda dig not-Black Jack being a guy who actually knows what’s going on.  I mean, look, he’s already basically Black Jack, so that’s some lovely intertextual stuff happening.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono
  • This is my only complaint about this episode, but it’s kind of a big one especially after the things I learned looking up women and sumo, and it’s part of what I’d been concerned about from the preview; The whole bit with Amu flirting with Sumotron to distract him so she could win. My problem, more than anything, is with the way she’s touching him. It really made my skin crawl. You could do the whole scene the same way and just have Amu walking around him, not touching him at all, and it makes the whole thing less skeevy. If you do it that way, it’s Sumotron projecting an idea onto Amu’s actions, which would be inherently non-sexual, and Amu taking advantage of it which feels more true to Amu’s nature, instead of her instigating it and using the same skeevy trope to bring down her opponent. It’s really a shame that this writer, who can make Leo of all people palatable, is resorting to this for Amu. (Though would I blame the writer or the director for this? I guess I’d have to see the script and see what the writer called for to see who’s to blame.)
Aleph
  • Yeeeeeah, the skeevitude is strong there.  I don’t know who to blame, either, but for all I’m all about Amu using every scrap of an advantage she can find to defeat a much, much larger opponent, playing into the idea that dudes should just lose their friggin’ minds around a pretty girl and just give up everything to get all handsy on ‘em is…  I mean, can we just stop?  I don’t know who to blame, but it’s just awful.  I swear to poop, I haven’t remembered this whole “pretty girl beats bad guy by cozying up to him and the slapping him down in the middle because women are manipulative and men are dumb, which is not insulting at all to everyone involved” being a thing in any of the Sentai I’ve watched and I want it to go back to Hell where it belongs.

Tide Turners – Some Enjoyable bits from this stretch of Zyuohger

Sono
  • Amu’s covering her eyes for half a second over the sumo buddies being nearly naked, but then being so curious about what they’re doing that she doesn’t care
  • Amu and Leo misunderstanding what “Cat Trick” meant and being kind of offended by the idea of people trying to trick cats was adorable. They’re so proud of who they are and want to defend their genus.
  • Giving Misao this little backstory with how he got embarrassed at a Sumo meet was nice building on the story the show has given him about trying to become athletic to make friends, and it felt like a natural way to distract them so Sumotron could win.
Aleph
  • I mean, look, at least Amu did win and the show was basically “No, look you guys, she 100% beat him and this was all inside the rules, so you can’t say she didn’t win.  I may not be crazy about the way it was done in the show, but they did just say that a girl can totally win at Sumo.  Again, like, don’t love how they did it, but they definitely said it could be did.
  • I really enjoy the “fish out of water” stuff they do with Zyuohger generally, I have to say.  Taking something like a national sport and just having someone show up to say “Oh, dang!  What even IS this?” and then taking part is always a hoot.
  • The whole ‘cat trick’ idea was really great generally.

Quick Reflexes – Questions left by this bit of Zyuohger

Shimoyama, who has covered the past two episodes, writes Leo very differently than our lead writer Komura. In this episode specifically, Leo emphasises fighting fairly, head-on, with all of one’s strength. This is directly contradicts the core of Leo’s conflict with Sela; Namely that he held back and let her win in a fight out of a misguided sense of “chivalry”. What do we think Shimoyama is up to? How could this affect Leo going forward?

Glitches

Sono
  • Emu thinks and treats his patients a little too much with his heart and not quite enough with his head. If the director of the hospital is putting this kid in quarantine, and when you see the kid he’s in so much pain that he asks you if he’s dying, you should probably not just take him to a video game launch party? Or at least maybe ask what their diagnosis on him is first to see if he’s contagious at all? Again, I’m sure this will even out with time, but he needs to think a little more like a doctor when he’s being a doctor.
  • That big CG Bugster was… not good to look at. But this is the first episode, so that sort of thing likely won’t be around very long, especially if they want to keep using so many CG effects for the Riders (which I don’t mind, I find those to actually be kind of charming). I can’t wait for the fights to even out into how they’re going to be for most of the show though.
  • I wish he had a hit combo counter when he’s fighting. They have little hit graphics for every time he bonks a monster, so a counter feels kind of natural and it would be a cute way to keep track of just how many people he’s beaten.
Aleph
  • Yeah, the monster’s first form was dire.  Just skip to the monster’s actual form, plz.
  • And I had a very similar reaction to Emu breaking quarantine.  Like, I realize that maybe dude can’t afford to buy the kid his own copy or sommat, but for serious, just head out, buy the kid a copy, let him play it on your gameboy.  Sure, there wouldn’t be an episode that way but that’d be a lot more safe than breaking quarantine after, again, everyone tells you that this is an impossible new virus nobody understands.
  • I’m gonna be the stick in the mud here about this one thing, but I am not fond of Kamen Riders having secret bases that are, like, full-on NORAD-style bases filled with high tech stuff.  It’s just not my bag.
Ammit
  • NORAD don’t bother me none, Aleph, but idolizing surgeons sure does! That opening narration was 1) a bit confusing as to who was the subject and 2) sounded like it was making surgeons out to be the gods among men who need to be praised and worshipped from sunrise to sundown.
  • The Director flipping switches in his performance was a bit much. [I’ll elaborate if that is clear as mud]
  • The Truth about 5 years ago… reminds me of Drive’s mysterious inception 6 months, no, 10 years before… as well as W’s. I don’t like that anymore. Wizard did a 6 month after jump into Haruto’s story and that was bad enough. It doesn’t need to keep happening like this!

Power-Ups

Sono
  • EX-Aid blows on the cartridge when he goes to use his finisher, so this show is already a complete success.
  • I assume the kids Emu is playing video games with at the very beginning are all hospital patients and I think that’s super cute. He really likes and cares for the kids he works to help and wants them to be able to have fun.
  • I like Not-Kai and Graphite a lot. They have a very “Medusa and Phoenix” vibe or a bit of what Heart and Brain had early on in Drive, which is nice to see again. I’m really eager to see how they play out.
Aleph
  • My biggest thing is that moment when he’s having his flashback and the doctor hands him the video game.  I already said the big things about the scene and its connections to the show’s thesis statement going forward, but it’s really good.
  • Honestly, the serial-fiction nerd in me was just ecstatic because this was a really good first episode.  They have a massive, sprawling cast and tons of mysteries and junk, but they left that aside to focus on the things that matter: what is the threat, what is causing it, how can it be fought, who will fight it, and what that someone’s world is like.  Add to that laying out what feel like some some major thematic elements and strong character stuff for Emu and I am IN.  I was gonna give three episodes before making a decision and maybe the next two will really wreck it for me, but this was a really good twenty-some minutes for me.
  • Also?  It’s another Den-O/OOO/Fourze kind of monster where it’s something IN a person that gestates and gets out of them, so it’s not, like, blowing up people who’ve been victimized and I’m a fan of that.
Ammit
  • PLUS ONE on that Mighty No. 9 dig, I love thinking that that’s what actually happened as a fun little aside for the creative team.
  • Despite my critiques of the game field generated by… Ex-Aid’s transformation, it was cool to have this wild place for him to be bouncing off of those blocks and breaking stuff out of them. The ITEM GET seems like it could be an entertaining mechanic.
  • The glimpses of Mighty Action X and the design of the Mighty himself are this amazing fusion of Sonic, Kirby and Mario and I would honestly kind of like to play it, if only for a little bit.

Points of Concern

Ex-Aid seems to be taking a lot of visual notes from Drive, such as the weird visual cuts to indicate comedy and the hospital director reminds me a lot of Honganji with his shifting quickly between serious and silly. He’s also a public servant with a secret division working within the facility he serves. How do we feel these compare?

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono
  • Tusk is telling Amu to cook her own pancakes, but there’s only 4 griddles on the table, and you’re clearly not making any, Tusk. Also if Sela wants a giant pancake that’s her business. Get your own pancakes and chill out.
  • They’re discussing the monster right in front of Mario. If we’re still supposed to assume that Mario doesn’t know what’s going on, why is he not questioning WHO is going to be attacking this summit and how these kids know about it? Why is he not calling the police?
  • Some of the cartoon effects on when everyone was yelling at Misao when they were all reversed were just a little too much for me. It feeds into that whole thing of the show making a joke of Misao’s mental illness. The sentiment is good but the execution is flawed.
Aleph
  • I think that’s a lot of it.  Or that it’s a sign that humans, too, can be really frustrating people and seeing someone else be frustrating to others makes him feel more at home or gives him a point of connection that is unique between them?
  • Just die in a fire already, Genis.  So friggin’ BORED with this guy.  Can Kubar just kill him already?  I don’t care that he knows the dude’s comin’, I wanna see that fight.  Win or lose, at least it’ll give me some kinda way to feel about Genis besides vague frustration that this awesome design won’t just get to the friggin’ point.

Tide Turners – Some Enjoyable bits from this stretch of Zyuohger

  • I can’t tell if Leo was unaffected by the reverse, or if the reverse just made him a nicer dude. It’s one or the other, but either way that speaks volumes about Leo.
  • Amu, Sela, and Yamato had some really interesting things to say about each other though, especially for this being the writer’s first episode on this show. We all knew Amu is kind of shady but she’s called out on how much distance she keeps from Misao. Yamato is a hypocrite and Sela has a persecution complex. These are all really interesting facets of their characters to bring up that have gone kind of ignored up until now. I hope these are things the show will actually address in the future, even if, again, it’s getting a little late.

  • Yeah, I didn’t see that, either.  I just really appreciate how it’s played almost 100% like it’s a romantic thing.  That’s amazing and I’m glad for some playing at subtext.
  • Spinning out of that, I really appreciated that there was an explicit callback made to the power of the friendship between two awkward guys.  And that they actually went out of their way to explain how the things that make each of them awkward were unique.  They were two precious frustrating snowflakes.
  • Seriously, I really dig on the episode just going in and mapping out how relationships work and why certain behaviors are cool in certain contexts but not in others.  Good on you, Zyuohger.

Quick Reflexes – Questions left by this bit of Zyuohger

Misao powers himself up to stand against Flipsider by enduring his friends barbs and then insists that they all be straightforward with him at Uncle Mario’s at the end.

How do you take to the concept of Misao embracing the discomfort and pain of hearing those truths to grow stronger?

How do you feel about that being the message, ethic or admonition conveyed? Did the show responsibly put forth the message that this is a good way to help someone grow?

  • Takeru’s mom got SO little screen time and we don’t even know her name. Honestly, i’m also miffed that she didn’t pick his name or even explain why she liked it. What does it mean anyway? It felt like it should have been significant, but it fell flat for me.
  • How did Sage move his capsule into the Daitenkuu attic, why did no one ever notice it before, etc, etc?
  • I wish the Divine Orb had been more of a hexagon or something else, but it looked neat overall…. Maybe the six wings work for that aspect of it. This is really just grasping at this point.
Sono
  • Right off the bat, I’m a little upset Aria didn’t go with them to fight. I mean, I guess I understand, send the three main riders, and someone has to keep an eye on Ganma world, and also she’s been alive for like a month and hasn’t actually eaten or slept and is probably hanging on by a thread, but they gave her an AMAZING suit. Let her use it.
  • The big CG doom cyclops was… just… bad to look at. I mean I know this isn’t sentai but just make a practical suit and use that if you’re going to have a giant humanoid monster. Please. Please it will look so much better.
  • Mmm… Iffy on Javert jumping in for Alain instead of Onari. Javert’s first act of good was to protect Onari from Igor, and I feel like it would have been really strong to make his “last” act protecting Onari from the Ganmiser’s monster. The moment still works, because Alain and Javert have had these parallels of trying to adapt to being human, but so much of Javert’s development had centered on Onari and so little of it on Alain that it just felt slightly off.

  • I confess, I’m very much with Ammit on the Divine Orb and its six wings not quite working.  Especially since all I could think as it drifted off into the cosmos wasn’t that hey, it’s a beautiful new thing that’s been born but instead, “Man, how’s Harry ever gonna catch that golden snitch?”
  • For all I love the design of Gan-Rider, the big one-eyed devourer-thing didn’t quite hit for me.  Loved the idea, but hodang was making it humanoid a bad call.  Just make it one of the Ganmeiser monoliths or something.  That’d’ve worked.
  • This whole thing just felt so friggin’ rushed.  It’s not like back at the start of the show where stuff felt dense, it’s just that everything but that big final confrontation just felt really “gotta tick these boxes off quick ‘cuz we only got one episode left”

  • Realizing that Eyecon G-d is a bit of an extreme take on Mugen. It feels organic and fresh that they look so similar and have so many elements that are the same between the two of them but the difference comes in execution. It works so well thematically and on a design level.
  • Takeru being selfless to the end and getting rewarded for that was so wonderful
  • Javert sacrificing himself and being able to come back, along with the other encapsulated people and move forward with the lessons they learned. I hope we can see Sword Mom in a future movie!!!
Sono
  • Shibuya and Narita sleeping on the floor was adorable. I love Narita’s rose pajamas.
  • Mall Goth EX-Aid was pretty fun. I actually like the 60’s Batman word effects on attacks that they have going. I have to admit, I’m warming up to EX-Aid more and more as I continue to see it. The suits are still awful, but it seems like it will be fun.
  • I kind of like the Ganmiser’s “I’m god and your silly human emotions can’t hurt me.” It plays well with the themes of the show and the ideals that Adel poured into the Ganmiser.
Aleph
  • I remember once hearing friend of the show Claire once making an observation about how interesting and cool it is that when it comes to a lot of your inhuman/cyborg superheroes in Japan, one of the common ways of showing that they’ve retained their humanity is less through, like, expressions of sexual interest or frenzied worries about same, but in just having them eat.  That onigiri at the end?  Kid looks like he earned that.
  • Not to get into a fight with Sono, but I actually really dug on the idea that after having the nonsense slapped out of him, Igor would wake up with some kind of love for humanity in his heart.  That’s him having a transformation.  Feel like if that middle bit of the series hadn’t been so mushy, this’d be a much more satisfactory payoff, but I love it nonetheless.
  • For all the practical in me is like “WHAT NO FIX THE CITY”, I actually really like the whole “faith in people” thing and how it drives home the very Kamen Rider idea that what’s important is human life, married to Takeru’s whole deal of humanity possessing infinite potential.

They did the thing from the opening IN the show. It looks SO good and the moment really works wonderfully!
