What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

This episode did a nice job paralleling the Grimms, who are focused in literary arts, and the Professor brothers, who are focused in physical science. I think it’s nice that these two fields are put on equal ground evenin this really subtle way. It’s a message of no matter what you love, you can get burnt out, and sometimes you need to step back and remember what it is that made you love what you’re doing. And it also has a nice message of connecting with others who share the same passions you do can help you stay enthusiastic about it and spread that enthusiasm.

Akari’s comments at the end of the episode may be for what is coming in the next  bit of Ghost, but they made me wonder if the focus is specifically going to be about balancing emotions in order to do well. That’s a far reaching theme in this show if you remember how Takeru would phase out of sight when he was low and unsure of himself. The Professor’s struggles and Akari’s dubbing Takeru the Rider of Light and all that went with it, make me think that the willful finding of balance will be a broad thrust for the show. These last two episodes did a good job of focusing on joy as a medium to bring people together and find the strength to endure. I particularly enjoyed that finding that strength to fight on for the sake of happiness and with a joyful spirit was divorced from being a Hot-Blooded Hero™.

Along those same lines, I really dug on the idea that what makes a thing worth doing is not all about monetary or social rewards (though it’s awesome when you can get them), but about finding the things about it that matter to you.  Doing science for its own sake?  Meh.  But doing science because you want to discover, learn, inspire, or some other feeling that you’re craving?  That’s what it’s about.  And then they use this thing of finding… well, they translate it as “fun”, but it seems a bit simple a word for what they seem to be talking about, isn’t it?  Joy, maybe?  Bliss (as in “follow your…”)?  Or maybe that’s exactly the right word translated directly.  I don’t know.

Look, I’m just excited for anything that talks about finding personal fulfillment as a thing of worth in and of itself.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

  • Alain getting back at Onari for the marker prank was cute. I still think the whole little joke with this was kind of funny, and it’s harmless. At least we don’t have internal conflict among our protagonists. Onari isn’t distrustful of Alain and trying to push him away from the group. Alain isn’t sulking about believing no one likes him and taking everything as a total slight and reason for hostile conflict. I’m more than willing to have this instead of that.
  • While I kind of eyeroll Akari as a hostage, at least this is more acceptable than any time Kiriko was kidnapped, because Igor sure as heck couldn’t take her hostage if she was conscious. And at least they didn’t make it weird. Because they could have and we all know it.
  • I love Makoto and Alain walking out like “Igor contacted us and it’s obviously a trap because it’s Igor.” Like there was no questioning of what could go wrong. Like clearly Igor has plans. Everyone knows what’s up.

  • I suppose Alain getting to mark Onari’s face is some form of comeuppance. I am not thrilled about it, but I guess it’s okay.
  • Great re-use of props from Trashfruit’s Helheim.
  • I was really tickled by the GanMook-Dwarves

  • I mostly enjoy how Mugen’s big thing is that, for all it’s the uber-upgrade, most of the time it doesn’t seem like Takeru actually charges in it, which is a detail I really dig on.  The monsters come at him, he deflects and dodges around and it makes for these really lovely close-combat things… which then end with a big ol’ traditional energy-bomb, BUT STILL.
  • Seriously, it’s nice to see Takaiwa Seiji getting to do some interesting stuff while in the suit, y’know?
  • I just really dig Igor just continuing to be this petty little jerk and that actually being kind of a threat.  That’s a hard balance to pull off and they strike it quite well in this show and works REALLY nice, as we were saying earlier, as a way to cut the intensity without losing momentum.

On Eyecons

1. Did it strike you as odd that Igor was able to overpower the Grimm Eyecon, thinking back to how Makoto struggled with Houdini?
2. Do you think Alain was better able to control the Grimm Eyecon because he is a stronger person than Igor?

Forcing Perspective

3. When Takeru fought the two Ganmeisers did his movements and demeanor feel almost predatory to you? If so, what does that say to you?

Spook Report

Ganma: Ganmeiser Liquid continues to search out a weakness in Ghost Mugen. Ganmeiser Fire is back and it teams up with Ganmeiser Liquid.

New Heroic Eyecon Summoned: None. Just more Mugen goodness.

Miscellaneous: Somehow Ganmeiser Fire came back. Are there two of each of the four Elements represented among the Ganmeisers? Igor used the Grimm Eyecon. Necrom used the Deep Slasher! We also learn the the Professors Jirou ran a children’s science museum which Akari visited. Akari had so much fun with the Jirous’ guidance that she wanted to become a scientist herself.
