Before we start Sono is going to give credit where it is due:

Writer: Hasegawa Keiichi

Director: Watanabe Katsuya

Action Director: Miyazaki Takeshi

I can’t believe Hasegawa wrote this. I mean I know he’s capable of it but this feels like an episode that would be given to the lead writer. But man the swing between the last arc and this, and all of it on Hasegawa and Katsuya… That’s some real dramatic whiplash.

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS. But also Ghost has this amazingly comfortable relationship with death and grieving. Every protagonist got to grieve. We got to see all of them taking their time to try to cope with Takeru’s death. No one told them not to. No one told them to move on. They just took their time, and they didn’t STOP grieving, even after they got up to fight.

For all of the toxic masculinity in that Shibuya arc, this episode made it very clear that you can cry when you’re hurting and still be strong. You can cry and simultaneously kick a hell god into another dimension.

I’m so proud of these kids, and that the creative team on Ghost really does their best to let them shine.

All I can think is that Ghost has an approach to death and grieving that works well for me: the person is not here, but they aren’t “gone”.  Which speaks to me on a lot of levels.  And then they brought it back with a Decade rebuild, which was lovely.  I can definitely see what you’re talking about as far as maybe it’s all a bit too much with death’s revolving door in Ghost given what we’ve seen before, but on the other hand?  Man, do I love a good “power of love” solution and this had a really nice one for me.

Perhaps the thing that comes most sharply into focus for me is, you can’t teach an old dog, new tricks. Takeru gets his final form through dying again and coming back, mostly. I love the idea of legacy that he focuses on and the idea of connecting generation to generation unto eternity is a sumptuous concept that works for me on so many levels. Shinnosuke and Gentarou died and came back to get their final forms and Takeru who is already dead, essentially dying to get his final form is a bit too much for me. Somewhere within me is this part that actually wants Takeru to die at the end of the series and the others REALLY do have to carry on without him because Ghost is so good about talking about that and I’m worried the end of the show won’t deliver in a satisfactory way if he has to live. Maybe I need Takeru to open my eyes so I can see beyond the bleakness. The non-Takeru stuff work so well for me, but Akari and everyone else were so great.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

  • AKARI YOU ANGEL. This was such an episode for her. Taking point, getting things done, picking up to fight. Even before anything happens, she’s getting involved shooting the Ganmiser, and then she just MAKES EVERYTHING HAPPEN. I love this girl and I’m so proud of her.
  • And honestly? Her plan was pretty brilliant. It was “Haruto kicks Phoenix into the sun”, except someone other than the main Rider got to do it. EVERYONE other than the main Rider got to do it. If it had been Adel or Igor instead of a Ganmeiser, it probably would have worked.
  • Everyone coping with what they believed was permanent death for Takeru, doing what they could to hang in there, and then coming to terms and taking on his ideals. They all proved just how bright his life was burning that his fire lived on in them.

  • I just have to wonder where Yurusen is from, then, if Alain doesn’t know the deal with him.  Like.  Dang, what’ is that little dude’s deal?
  • But more on-task, look, that gunslinger walk was killer.
  • As was the scenes of grief?  Like, everyone gets to be sad, everyone gets to be messed up, everyone gets to feel lost, but it’s not the traditional “manpain” thing where nobody can get past it and has to spend an episode screaming.  When your bro is alive, you chop wood and carry water.  When they’re dead, well, you get sad… and then you chop wood and carry water.  Or, more appropriate for this series, shoot shiranui and Rider Kick.

  • I was really excited by Akari’s plan to slip the Ganmeiser into another dimension.
  • I was shocked when it made its way out by crashing through the barrier between worlds.
  • Alain’s reaction to Yurusen was great.

On Eyecons

What do you think of Mugen’s soft reveal?

Forcing Perspective

Have you accepted and how do you feel about the fact that each Ganmeiser seems to serve one function?

Does Takeru’s quasi death and sort-of resurrection for the second or third time here, depending on how you count it, undermine the trajectory of the show?
