Focus

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Sono

This episode did a nice job paralleling the Grimms, who are focused in literary arts, and the Professor brothers, who are focused in physical science. I think it’s nice that these two fields are put on equal ground evenin this really subtle way. It’s a message of no matter what you love, you can get burnt out, and sometimes you need to step back and remember what it is that made you love what you’re doing. And it also has a nice message of connecting with others who share the same passions you do can help you stay enthusiastic about it and spread that enthusiasm.

Ammit

Akari’s comments at the end of the episode may be for what is coming in the next  bit of Ghost, but they made me wonder if the focus is specifically going to be about balancing emotions in order to do well. That’s a far reaching theme in this show if you remember how Takeru would phase out of sight when he was low and unsure of himself. The Professor’s struggles and Akari’s dubbing Takeru the Rider of Light and all that went with it, make me think that the willful finding of balance will be a broad thrust for the show. These last two episodes did a good job of focusing on joy as a medium to bring people together and find the strength to endure. I particularly enjoyed that finding that strength to fight on for the sake of happiness and with a joyful spirit was divorced from being a Hot-Blooded Hero™.

Aleph

Along those same lines, I really dug on the idea that what makes a thing worth doing is not all about monetary or social rewards (though it’s awesome when you can get them), but about finding the things about it that matter to you.  Doing science for its own sake?  Meh.  But doing science because you want to discover, learn, inspire, or some other feeling that you’re craving?  That’s what it’s about.  And then they use this thing of finding… well, they translate it as “fun”, but it seems a bit simple a word for what they seem to be talking about, isn’t it?  Joy, maybe?  Bliss (as in “follow your…”)?  Or maybe that’s exactly the right word translated directly.  I don’t know.

Look, I’m just excited for anything that talks about finding personal fulfillment as a thing of worth in and of itself.

Woments

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

Sono

  • Alain getting back at Onari for the marker prank was cute. I still think the whole little joke with this was kind of funny, and it’s harmless. At least we don’t have internal conflict among our protagonists. Onari isn’t distrustful of Alain and trying to push him away from the group. Alain isn’t sulking about believing no one likes him and taking everything as a total slight and reason for hostile conflict. I’m more than willing to have this instead of that.
  • While I kind of eyeroll Akari as a hostage, at least this is more acceptable than any time Kiriko was kidnapped, because Igor sure as heck couldn’t take her hostage if she was conscious. And at least they didn’t make it weird. Because they could have and we all know it.
  • I love Makoto and Alain walking out like “Igor contacted us and it’s obviously a trap because it’s Igor.” Like there was no questioning of what could go wrong. Like clearly Igor has plans. Everyone knows what’s up.

Ammit

  • I suppose Alain getting to mark Onari’s face is some form of comeuppance. I am not thrilled about it, but I guess it’s okay.
  • Great re-use of props from Trashfruit’s Helheim.
  • I was really tickled by the GanMook-Dwarves

Aleph

  • I mostly enjoy how Mugen’s big thing is that, for all it’s the uber-upgrade, most of the time it doesn’t seem like Takeru actually charges in it, which is a detail I really dig on.  The monsters come at him, he deflects and dodges around and it makes for these really lovely close-combat things… which then end with a big ol’ traditional energy-bomb, BUT STILL.
  • Seriously, it’s nice to see Takaiwa Seiji getting to do some interesting stuff while in the suit, y’know?
  • I just really dig Igor just continuing to be this petty little jerk and that actually being kind of a threat.  That’s a hard balance to pull off and they strike it quite well in this show and works REALLY nice, as we were saying earlier, as a way to cut the intensity without losing momentum.

Questions

On Eyecons

1. Did it strike you as odd that Igor was able to overpower the Grimm Eyecon, thinking back to how Makoto struggled with Houdini?
2. Do you think Alain was better able to control the Grimm Eyecon because he is a stronger person than Igor?

Forcing Perspective

3. When Takeru fought the two Ganmeisers did his movements and demeanor feel almost predatory to you? If so, what does that say to you?

Rough Demandes

Was there anything that rubbed you the wrong way?

Ammit

  • I sure wish they hadn’t replayed a good deal of the concluding scene from last episode.
  • It seemed a bit odd that Usagi was calling upon the power of the Nine Planets, given that Hotaru is dead at this point.

Sono

  • There seemed to be a lot in this episode that was there just to fill time. A lot of animation from previous episodes and reaction shots. I know reactions shots help the drama but there were parts where there was two cycles of reaction shots from all ten-ish observers for every one thing that happened.
  • Hey, Ammit: Nine guardians, not nine planets. I figured she was either counting herself or Chibiusa.

Frills

What were some lovely things you found especially catching?

Ammit

  • Everyone combining their attacks was so epic!
  • Pharaoh 90 absorbing their attacks and breaking out was a sight to behold!
  • That ROCKING METAL in the back ground as Pharaoh 90 was getting the upper hand was SO amazing.
  • Usagi’s resolve to protect everyone and sacrifice herself if need be was so beautiful. Her memories and her soliloquy hit me SO hard.
  • Sailor Saturn’s costume is fantastic.

Sono

  • Even Mamoru got to get in on it with Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber!
  • I love the Double Rainbow Moon Heartache, and I love how they chose to animate the stock footage for it. Usagi and Chibiusa look so fierce. And I always love a good double attack.

Quotable Quotes

What were some of the best or worst lines that stood out to you?

There were too many tears this week.

Inquisition

These are questions sparked by the episode. Sono and Ammit discuss them in the show and want to hear your thoughts too. Please comment on this post to answer or use Twitter, Tumblr or send your replies to the inbox.

  1. We’ve talked about Usagi basically being G-d. Do you think her sacrificing herself to save the others is a part of her apotheosis or an expression of her heroism?
  2. What are your thoughts on Saturn’s debut? How do you read her?
  3. What do you suppose caused the twist in fate? Is Hotaru living part of what brought Earth to Pharaoh 90’s attention?
  4. Does the time-logic make sense in all this? Should everyone take for granted that they will make it through this and Usagi will be fine?

Focus

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Sono

I guess they’re kind of going for this “You need to balance responsibility and relaxation properly and not do too much of one or the other”, which is good, I guess. I know my time management skills need some help. And the Brothers Grimm is a neat choice to use, I think, since one person needs to balance these two ideas, just like Takeru needs to find a balance between these two souls to commune with the one eyecon.

It’s an interesting set up, and I think it’s nice to tell kids that “Hey everyone needs time to just step back and relax and that is normal and healthy, but also your responsibilities are important and you can’t just shrug them off.”

Aleph

That’s a lot of what I was picking up, too.  But, hey, it’s a good thing to talk about.  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and all that.  And it also lets us play with how the Brothers Grimm are often referred to as a single entity but are, in fact, two people and all that.  I mean, this doesn’t read much like a perfect representation buuuut these are often pop-cultural takes, so I get it.  Not to mention, it keeps up this thing where we’re playing with familial harmony, which… is an interesting theme for them to take up.  I know we’re all about Saint Dad and all, but it does feel like it’s got associations to that last bout of family drama in the show and I am annoyed at that.  Always feel like I’m about to get slammed upside the head with “harmony at all costs” when “harmony looks like a lot of things and there’s compromises to be made but make sure you’ve got the right goal in mind when you go after ‘em”.  I wouldn’t mind if we did more than “You guys need to balance one another out” with this, I guess.

Ammit

Your origin is less important than who and what you choose to defend and what it is that guides you. The Ganmeisers act as machines with no compassion and no frivolous things to distract them from their mission and goals. That sort of thing works well for machines, but for people it will lead to failure and suffering. Alain once chose to act as a machine, as did Makoto.Their initial Heroic Eyecons reflected their lack of more clarity while Takeru, who is guided by a desire to help others and who has formed a connection with some of the less savory Heroic Eyecons helping him stands in contrast to some of them. Takeru morally grounds the darker historical figures he has as Heroic Eyecons and puts their energies and efforts towards truly good causes which is something everyone of us can choose to do for ourselves, metaphorically.

Woments

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

Sono

  • Yurusen was gold this week, and Onari and Yurusen messing with each other is probably one of my favorite things.
  • And we’ve discussed the lore a little more! The eye is god, which explains why it’s on everything. The Ganmeiser are really grumpy lesser deities who are maybe ticked that no one is actually praying to the Great Eye anymore (Because Adel sure isn’t) and that this kid is after a second wish?
  • All of the eyecons getting fired up when Takeru said he believed in them was super cute. These 14 Dads + 1 Mom love their dumb ghost son.

Aleph

  • Really enjoyed Takeru getting sucked into the Grimm Eyecon just to see them fight and then getting kicked out.  I don’t know why, that sequence really tickled me.
  • Loved seeing Book Ganma again.
  • And also, this is a really neat/weird plan and I’m going to use it as a thing that backs up my belief that the Ganmeisers are stealing human potential.  First by harvesting it by taking away everything people had done since they were kids, now by erasing everything that’s going to come after here and now by trapping people in a dream world that is in no way an analog for drugs.

Sarracenian

  • That weird dream garden reminds me of the surreal episodes of Kamen Rider Black, only far less gothic horror. Still, reminding me of Black is always nice.
  • Whoa hey that new form sure looks nice
  • Digging that scene where Igor goes “IT’S MY NEMESIS” when she sees Akari. Starting to see how his cool is slowly chipping away and getting more obsessed over her.

Ammit

  • Big bro and the Octopus Baller immediately recognize Sage as Magistrate Eadith. They go  talk to him about it and while he deflects them, I was so glad to see that they actually brought into focus that these two guys should know who he is.
  • I am thrilled with how explicit Sage is being about everything at this point.
  • Knowing the original plan would have kept Takeru safe was really interesting and says a lot about Ryu’s intentions and it is really sweet.

Questions

On Eyecons

1. How exactly does Takeru communing with the Heroic Eyecons function? This episode sure makes it seem like the creative don’t know how it works. What are your thoughts on this?

2. How did you enjoy the debut of Infinite Form?

Forcing Perspective

3. When Sage is asked if he knows what is going on with Takeru’s 99 day counter, he says he doesn’t know. The uncanny Yurusen confirms that Takeru still only has 37 days left. Does that seem strange to you?

4. Do you buy Sage’s defection of the question of his identity?

5. What are your thoughts on Sage swinging between somber and silly while answering all these big questions?

Animal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

Sono

Overall I thought this episode was pretty good, and they seem to be going for a sort of “Don’t let fear get the better of you.” sort of lesson. But more than that, they seem to be encouraging talking about your fears. Because confronting it together doesn’t make it “not scary”, but it makes it a lot easier to handle.

Leo and Sela both openly deny it because they’re the “tough” ones, while Tusk and Amu mostly stay quiet about it, and that leads to everyone dealing with their fears alone, but when Yamato finally calls everyone out and they admit to being afraid together, they all immediately become less scared and come up with a plan. They know The World is still ridiculously dangerous, but it’s still five against one and it’s going to be for as long as they face him. And I think that’s a really healthy thing to present to kids.

Ammit

The strongest bit of this episode really is the embracing of fear attitude that Yamato has and I love it for that. I’ll go on later about how much I liked that, but this episode was a glorious fusion of a simple strong message and a lot of fun.

Aleph

Yeah, and I really dig on the idea that we’re introducing The Other (aka: the one who is like me, but not) last ep, overcoming our fear of The Other in this one and, implicitly, coming to understand that The Other is just someone for whom life has been different and that our understanding and potential friendship will do more than any amount of screaming and giant robot punches ever could.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono
  • Someone please feed The World. This boy is too skinny I can see his bones. Please give him food or give him to me so I can feed him. I am concerned. This kid looks malnourished.
  • So after that first fight we just LEFT THAT GIRL IN THAT CARD BOX? She was in there for a couple of hours with no air. I know we saw her at the end but how did she survive that?! Give HER a Champion Symbol.  Dang.
  • The World’s robot is less ugly than his suit but it’s still not great. I do like Rhino as a tractor trailer carrying Wolf and Crocodile though. I think that’s pretty neat.
Ammit
  • Leo’s astonishment at The World’s Cube Animals combining was irritating because he’s been doing this for a while now
  • The Yamato-less Wild Zyuoh King seems like a stretch to me. How did they do that? Isn’t it in his cube?
Aleph
  • Well, they can run the other mech with just two of ‘em, so… I dunno, it’s not that much of a stretch for me, anyway.
  • But I guess my biggest beef is really the tonal whiplash between skinny mcgee there screaming and it’s all angsty because his life has been stolen and he’s been drafted into a war he doesn’t want anything to do with and then LET’S LET’S DANCE.  Guys, c’mon.

Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono
  • Mario is adorable. He is a good dad to these kids and he just wants them to be happy. I love how he’s perfectly willing to wrestle and play with Leo all the time because that’s how Leo is.
  • I do really like the scene with Leo and Sela (and the whole team really, but those two were the most vocal) trying to deny how scared they were and Yamato calling them out on it. Everyone laughing together about how scared they were and helping each other through it was really sweet.
  • All of the choreography and direction on The World’s fights are really spectacular. It makes it a lot easier to deal with his terrible suit when he’s moving round a lot.
Ammit
  • Naria being involved with handling Zyuoh The World is awesome, especially because it puts her in play a bit and lets her be nasty towards the Zyuohgers who she clearly hates and wants to destroy
  • Cube Crocodile and Cube WOLF-O are going on my wishlist because they just look so cool! They are collectible enough that I would buy them in a set with Rhino who hasn’t quite caught my attention.
  • Tusk pointing out the Zyuoh The World won’t even let Wild Zyuoh King tee up an attack is cool.
Aleph
  • +1 the fear talk.  Love that bit
  • Just gonna say that I am in love with that robot. It’s got this chunky industrial feel that is basically perfect for me.  And having him control it like it’s a big rig?  Glorious.
  • And, honestly, I like an episode where the good guys lose here and there.  And it’s a relatively long-term and standing loss, even, insofar as it’s not two parts of the same fight where they look like they’re in trouble but no not really.

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono
  • Okay well my worries about them dragging out The World in an AbareKiller-esque fashion seem to be a non-issue if next episode we’re already getting “But you don’t really want to fight.” That shot of him and Genis tho… Uh… Let’s… Let’s not. Please save this child immediately. Bring him to Mario so Mario can feed him.
  • Still waiting on the main team to get second animals. The hinges in their helmets, Amu especially, was really noticeable this episode for some reason. Maybe The World can help all of them unlock that?
Aleph
  • Figure that’s gonna be how they beat him.  They ALL sorta become The World?  I guess?  Maybe?  Take the card back from him or sommat?
  • I mean, they put the 7 8 9 on the evil robot so I keep thinking it’s deffo gonna combine with theirs at some point.  I’m looking forward to it.

Quick Reflexes – Questions in reaction to this bit of Zyuohger.

  1. Are you satisfied with the “powers going out of control” stopping Zyuoh The World from killing Yamato?
  2. Would you have preferred that bird-dad-Kusaka had stopped Zyuoh The World from killing Yamato?
  3. With all the talk of boredom from Zyuoh The World as well as him saying things like “game over” and “make the game interesting” do you think it is possible that Genis has tricked The World into thinking that this IS a game of some sort?

Rough Demandes

Was there anything that rubbed you the wrong way?

Sono

37

  • You could really feel what parts of this episode got the budget and what didn’t. Thankfully none of it was apparent in how the characters were animated, but some of the effects early on in the episode felt a little lazy or like visual shortcuts had been taken to put more time into things toward the end of the episode.

Ammit

37

  • Mistress 9 tearing apart Hotaru’s body put me off a bit, because it seemed like there was a lot of focus on her piercing her bosom. I got it the first time, but I felt that adding scratching at her arms and closer to the clavicle and even throat would have translated the intention of destroying the Vessel slightly better.
  • Why didn’t Mistress 9 just attack the Outers when they put up the barricade, wouldn’t that have made more sense?
  • I didn’t really like Mamoru’s tone when he sort of chided everyone for not destroying Mistress 9 right away. The rest of the moment as cool, but it seemed off for him to be sharp like that, instead of just insistent that it should be done.

Frills

What were some lovely things you found especially catching?

Sono

  • 36: Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna’s story about being alone and how that encouraged Usagi through her loneliness.
  • 37: The outers were added to the little attack sequence in the opening. I thought that was really neat.
  • Nice love confession between Hotaru and Chibiusa, only pushed further when Chibiusa goes to fight on behalf of Hotaru, and Mamoru comments that he feels like he just gave her away to be married.
  • Chibiusa’s strength and ferocity in getting up to fight and attacking Mistress 9 with an attack stronger than the five inners combined.

Ammit

  • I only have notes on 37 I ran out of time to go back and make them while watching 36 again.
  • The body horror with Mistress 9 tearing apart Hotaru’s body was VERY EFFECTIVE. It was so gross that I was actively twinging in my seat and considered putting down my food, as I was watching over lunch.
  • Mamoru feeling as if he had given Chibs away in marriage was SO sweet
  • Mistress 9’s Tau form was great, especially in the later stages
  • Super Chibi Sailor Moon
  • Flying Tuxedo Mask is something I never thought I’d see, and I love knowing that his love for his future wife and kid are the things that make him stronger and open him up to all these abilities he would never have had otherwise. It’s a great metaphor.

Quotable Quotes

“I won’t cry anymore. I’m a Sailor Guardian.”

-Chibi-Usa upon resolving to fight with the life Hotaru saved.

Sono

“Hotaru-chan lives here. She lives in our hearts.”

-Chibiusa to Usagi when Usagi asks if Hotaru is gone.

  2. Is it disappointing that the Witches 5 were created by Tomoe and not Tau System Natives?
  3. Did you enjoy HOW off-model the animation went for Professor Tomoe as he was telling his desire to become Divine?
  4. Did the dissolution of Super Sailor Moon’s power bother you? I know Usagi said the bond was cut, but how exactly?
  5. Did you enjoy how off-model Mistress 9 got as she was breaking Hotaru’s body?

I can’t believe Hasegawa wrote this. I mean I know he’s capable of it but this feels like an episode that would be given to the lead writer. But man the swing between the last arc and this, and all of it on Hasegawa and Katsuya… That’s some real dramatic whiplash.

Focus

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Sono

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS. But also Ghost has this amazingly comfortable relationship with death and grieving. Every protagonist got to grieve. We got to see all of them taking their time to try to cope with Takeru’s death. No one told them not to. No one told them to move on. They just took their time, and they didn’t STOP grieving, even after they got up to fight.

For all of the toxic masculinity in that Shibuya arc, this episode made it very clear that you can cry when you’re hurting and still be strong. You can cry and simultaneously kick a hell god into another dimension.

I’m so proud of these kids, and that the creative team on Ghost really does their best to let them shine.

Aleph

All I can think is that Ghost has an approach to death and grieving that works well for me: the person is not here, but they aren’t “gone”.  Which speaks to me on a lot of levels.  And then they brought it back with a Decade rebuild, which was lovely.  I can definitely see what you’re talking about as far as maybe it’s all a bit too much with death’s revolving door in Ghost given what we’ve seen before, but on the other hand?  Man, do I love a good “power of love” solution and this had a really nice one for me.

Ammit

Perhaps the thing that comes most sharply into focus for me is, you can’t teach an old dog, new tricks. Takeru gets his final form through dying again and coming back, mostly. I love the idea of legacy that he focuses on and the idea of connecting generation to generation unto eternity is a sumptuous concept that works for me on so many levels. Shinnosuke and Gentarou died and came back to get their final forms and Takeru who is already dead, essentially dying to get his final form is a bit too much for me. Somewhere within me is this part that actually wants Takeru to die at the end of the series and the others REALLY do have to carry on without him because Ghost is so good about talking about that and I’m worried the end of the show won’t deliver in a satisfactory way if he has to live. Maybe I need Takeru to open my eyes so I can see beyond the bleakness. The non-Takeru stuff work so well for me, but Akari and everyone else were so great.

Woments

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

Sono

  • AKARI YOU ANGEL. This was such an episode for her. Taking point, getting things done, picking up to fight. Even before anything happens, she’s getting involved shooting the Ganmiser, and then she just MAKES EVERYTHING HAPPEN. I love this girl and I’m so proud of her.
  • And honestly? Her plan was pretty brilliant. It was “Haruto kicks Phoenix into the sun”, except someone other than the main Rider got to do it. EVERYONE other than the main Rider got to do it. If it had been Adel or Igor instead of a Ganmeiser, it probably would have worked.
  • Everyone coping with what they believed was permanent death for Takeru, doing what they could to hang in there, and then coming to terms and taking on his ideals. They all proved just how bright his life was burning that his fire lived on in them.

Aleph

  • I just have to wonder where Yurusen is from, then, if Alain doesn’t know the deal with him.  Like.  Dang, what’ is that little dude’s deal?
  • But more on-task, look, that gunslinger walk was killer.
  • As was the scenes of grief?  Like, everyone gets to be sad, everyone gets to be messed up, everyone gets to feel lost, but it’s not the traditional “manpain” thing where nobody can get past it and has to spend an episode screaming.  When your bro is alive, you chop wood and carry water.  When they’re dead, well, you get sad… and then you chop wood and carry water.  Or, more appropriate for this series, shoot shiranui and Rider Kick.

Ammit

  • I was really excited by Akari’s plan to slip the Ganmeiser into another dimension.
  • I was shocked when it made its way out by crashing through the barrier between worlds.
  • Alain’s reaction to Yurusen was great.

Forcing Perspective

Have you accepted and how do you feel about the fact that each Ganmeiser seems to serve one function?

Does Takeru’s quasi death and sort-of resurrection for the second or third time here, depending on how you count it, undermine the trajectory of the show?

Animal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

Sono

Episode 16 an episode that sets up for ZyuohTheWorld, which is a freakin’ mouthful by the way, but it gives us a lot of insight into Yamato. A lot of his beliefs and ideals come from Mario, and the time they’ve spent together really did a lot to shape him even before whatever happened to his parents.

Episode 17 gave us a lot more background on Sela and her family life and followed through on the introduction of ZyuohTheWorld, and I think overall it really hit on its two main goals. The MotW plot was actually decently frightening, even if it had a sort of boring conclusion.

It did give kids a kind of nice message that you need to tell the truth, even if you’re afraid of what may happen, and it did it in a way that is different from how that message is normally presented. I do sort of dislike that Sela never actually explained to the kid why she was stalling for time, as if she HAD explained it would send a nice sort of double message. One to kids that sometimes adults make mistakes and don’t explain things when they should because they want to protect kids, but also a nice note to parents who are maybe watching with their kids that children aren’t stupid. You can explain why plans change, or why something is dangerous and needs to be avoided, and they’ll get it. Trust your kids.

Aleph

All I can really say for 16 is that it made me like Mario, which was welcome.  I may not know a lot of concrete details about Mario or his deal, but I know who he is and that’s amazing.  It’s a nice counterpoint to the Ghost stuff that aired that week ‘cause it seemed to be saying that if your own parents are crap, a found family sort of relationship can be invaluable for helping you figure out what’s going on with you.  And having Mario be, implicitly, where Yamato got his “don’t eff with this planet” tagline?  Golden.
17, though?  I mean, I definitely get the ‘be honest’ angle but the bigger thing really was The World (makes me wish the Zoolanders were an eagle, a bull, and a lion, but two of them are on the main team, so…) for me.  Kinda glad, though, that the moral seemed to be more for the adults watching the show?  Not just that you should be honest, but that there’s certain things you maybe shouldn’t keep from your kids as they need the information if they’re gonna make a good decision.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono

16

  • Please stop making Tusk smell things and track like a dog. I’m not sure if it skeeves me (It always upsets him so much and then he has to crawl around on the ground?) or I just feel bad for Tusk but like… Please don’t make him keep doing this.

17

  • To be totally honest, I can’t believe Mario’s plan worked. I cannot believe that’s all it took. I mean I’m mildly annoyed by defacing playing cards, but they weren’t actual playing cards so fine, but man just drawing on them seems a little too easy?
  • Don’t get me wrong. I love Sela. But with how much background they’re dumping into her, I’m a little disappointed we haven’t seen much for Leo and Tusk and literally none for Amu.
  • Genis just named him “The World”? Why? Please I need an actual explanation for this beyond my immediate thought of “Genis watched JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and wants to be Dio”.

Aleph

16

  • I don’t really have a whole lot to say one way or another on 16.  It’s fine, I guess.  Mostly, I just wanted it to be a sign that Naria was up to more but instead it was a monster who’s in lurve with her ‘cuz I guess even when she’s got her own stuff going on, we still gotta make it about a dude?

17

  • Just on a structure level, this one annoys me a bit.  Don’t get me wrong, I dig on trying to draw out the thing about GokaiOhz there to build some suspense but eeeeesh.  Trying to fit the monster of the week in with it was just… meh.
  • Seriously, I am being stupidly annoyed that he’s called “The World” and the animal combo is all wrong for that.  Also, the spear mode of his multi-weapon takes juuuuust a little too much squinting to get you there.  I appreciate what it’s going for, but it’s not as good as it could be.

Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono

16

  • Everyone loves Mario so much I’m so happy for him. Leo and Mario in the beginning were cute, and I’m glad Amu acknowledges how sketchy the four of them are and appreciates that Mario takes care of them anyway.
  • It’s absolutely hilarious that the Deathgalien can’t tell the difference between a human in a costume and a Zyuman. I can almost understand the mascot costumes, but there was just a maid with cat paw gloves.
  • Naria is ruthless and I love when she gets to show that. I wish there had been more, but there was some really great suit acting for her that made it feel like she honestly didn’t want to be dealing with any of this, and the confrontation with Mario was really great. I’m hoping that Mario also saying “Don’t mess with this planet” is a connection she noticed and plans to exploit later.

17

  • A playing card themed MotW? You spoil me, Zyuohger. His design was so good too. I love it. This was wonderful.
  • Even if I’m bothered that no one else is getting this much story treatment, I love Sela’s “Big sister” nature and how she just defaults to that with everyone regardless of their age. Sela’s a big sweetheart.
  • Amu did get some good moments in this episode though, pointing out who had the same cards, and finding out about destroying the card case. I’m on constant Amu-watch so it was nice to see her get to do a bit.
Aleph

16:

  • Mario!  Finally a reason to like this dude!  Hooray!  He’s brave as all get out and I really appreciate that.  And him being Yamato’s found family?  Wonderful!
  • Naria talking crap to all the filthy humans who aren’t actually Zyulanders but trying to pretend they are.  Who do they think they are?  Naria’s so great.
  • I really like the creation of The World, if only because it sets up the guy as a Kamen Rider, which got me so excited.

17:

  • And to disagree with Sono, I actually thought the “deface the card” solution was a fairly clever one.  Even if I would have also appreciated that it might have needed something a little more than just a crayon.
  • Having a playing card baddie as a way to introduce a guy who shares his name with a tarot card?  Clever.  Nicely done, production team.
  • I love so many things about The World.  Maybe not the name (which is weird and is juuuuust this side of being great in an esoteric way), but I really dig on it.  I’ll agree that the suit might have needed a second go-over but I might say that about all the suits in this show.  Mostly I just dug on how his weapon–imperfectly-implemented as it was–was all of these classic “collect animals so as to eat them” weapons.

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono
  • The set up for ZyuohTheWorld makes me think he might be a callback to either GaoSilver — Especially given that he has two out of three of the same animals –, which would be amazing, or maybe AbareKiller, which would be awful please don’t. Even though his suit is ugly as sin, I’d love to complete the holy trinity of possessed nerd 6ths that GaoSilver and KyoRyuGold started.
  • Zyuohger is doing what Kyoryuger did with it’s ending dance, so I’m super hype to see little kids having fun and doing the Zyuohger Dance..
Aleph
  • Okay, so they’re gonna show the kids dancing?  I was wondering if it was that or if they were gonna judge the kids’ performance and feature the kid on the show. Either way, that’s really cool.
  • The World is 100% a Kamen Rider so I guess it’s not even a real guess that he’s gonna flip at some point, but still.  Putting that out.  But what the heck are they doing with Bird Kusaka, then?

Quick Reflexes – Questions in reaction to this bit of Zyuohger.

  1. 16 – So Mario met ZyuohEagle. Even though at the end of the episode, he claims not to know of any other identity for ZyuohEagle, do you think he might know?
  2. 17 – Now that we’ve met ZyuohTheWorld, what are our reactions?
