The People Vs Rogers Vs Stark – Trial of Heroes 01

Join Aleph, Cannibal Sarracenian and Ammit as they discuss Captain America: Civil War and what it says about the characters and creative forces behind them. There is general discussion about the movie, but really it’s a deep cutting analysis of what is wrong with the premise and execution of the premise of this movie.

Questions used to prompt the discussion throughout the episode. Feel free to respond if you like.

  1. What are your thoughts overall on Civil War?
  2. Were you familiar with the source material? Does the source material weigh in your estimation of Stark, Rogers or anyone else in the story?
  3. Were you Team Cap or Team Iron Man- at the start? at the End?
  4. What Ethics and Morals do you see embodied by Stark and Rogers?

Listen in to the episode to hear some juicy bonus discussion featuring Mayday Parker and basically how gutless Marvel is because they won’t move on from a character.

Animal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

Sono

I enjoyed this episode a lot, even though my feelings on Leo kind of fluctuated the whole time, but I feel like this is a lot closer to the Leo we’re supposed to see and be learning to love and relate to than the Leo from two episodes ago who can’t be within 6 feet of a woman at any time without becoming the grossest dude on Earth.

There’s some nice stuff in here about the values of planning ahead and not running into a situation blindly, but also not being so caught up in failure that you can’t be flexible with your plans. Neither Tusk nor Leo are totally right or totally wrong in their approach, and it’s a bit of both that gets things solved. Knowing the problem and how to face it is good, but being flexible enough to think on your feet and come up with something that might work better instead of losing once and giving up is pretty important.

Aleph

But hot dang does it really butt up against those previous episodes…  I mean, I enjoyed it a bit, if only ‘cuz it’s nice to see the good parts of Leo where he’s a creature of short-term extremes and how Tusk is chill and long-term, but also exposing how there’s a weakness there, too. Overall, it’s a great message, though, because I really dig on a moral that is basically “We all have something to contribute and if we all work together, we can become better than we would be alone,” which I think seems to go to the heart of Sentai.

Ammit

I guess this episode is talking about the importance of building bridges or better still understanding one’s limitations. Leo and Tusk had their faces shoved in the fact that neither of them had senses keen enough to combat Huntelder’s strategic sniping and Yamato and Sela were even put out of play, showing that their enhanced senses weren’t even enough to counter him. Tusk and Leo had to really think on their feet and to do that they had to own their shortcomings and really on each other’s strengths.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono
  • As always, not nearly enough Naria.
  • Not really a bad thing but it feels more appropriate here, but I just felt really bad for Amu the whole time Tusk and Leo are fighting. Again, Amu can’t really handle conflict, and with Yamato and Sela, who are the ones she generally gets on best with, both out of the picture she really had no one to hide behind and Haruka did a really good job portraying Amu’s constant distress over the situation.
Ammit
  • Onore Zyuoh Gorilla! I am really getting sick of seeing this guy!
  • Leo is really making me uncomfortable. It really feels like the show is trying to make me like him and put him up as #2 next to Yamato and I don’t like it. Just to Persona this, this is how I feel about Hanamura Yosuke in P4, he is way problematic and I want to like him and the cretivess want me to like him but the narrative insists on him being problematic as well.
  • I would like to have seen Sela and Yamato paired to deal with Huntelder, but clearly the Zyuohger Creatives didn’t want that.
Aleph
  • I mean, we could probably just say there’s never enough Sela and leave it there as the show’s major failing… but that wouldn’t be fair.
  • Overall, I think having another thing that’s all about Leo was a bad idea after this last chunk of episodes?  Give us a little to forget that he’s creepy before trying to make us like him.
  • Yo, whatever happened to Bird Kusaka?
  • I had fun while watching this episode, but… I mean, it was just kinda there overall.  I like how Tusk and Leo bounce off one another but it’s just nowhere near as good as Tusk’s focus ep.
  • Really wish Amu’d get another focus ep.

Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono
  • I thought Amu sulking due to the rain, but Sela kind of peacefully enjoying it in the very beginning was really cute. It’s a nice bit of personality on display.
  • It was some neat writing to take out Sela and Yamato, whose senses could find the enemy, right off the bat so we’d have to come up with a more nuanced plan.
  • I thought Leo and Tusk’s plan with the mannequin was actually very very clever. Simple and obvious if you’re used to the beats sentai hits, but I know if I had been a little kid, I would have been REALLY impressed by it.
  • Plus Leo looked really good in that tux. I’m willing to say it.
  • The actual fight action in this episode was really nice.
  • Tusk walking up to this dude, holding a gun to his head, and saying “Let’s see how you like being shot at” and then firing at him as he tried to crawl away was incredibly brutal, and I sure didn’t expect it from Tusk of all people. My emotions on it are kind of mixed (from the perspective of “You are showing this to children.”) but apparently I liked it enough to put it here and not in the last section. (Aleph:  Look, elephants are stone-cold killers.  They will tear EVERYTHING up if they decide you deserve it.  Sneak up and murder you in your home.) [Ammit: ICYMI, an elephant slapped a guy with a Selfie Stick LINK]
  • I’m glad the show addressed the fact that there were like 50 people in Mario’s house at the end of the episode. I was a little afraid they might have forgotten.
Aleph
  • Finally having a thing with a guy coded like a 19th century Big Game Hunter.  I am honestly surprised it took this long.
  • Fight choreography is improving.  Really, really like it.
  • Gotta plus-one that the plan was pretty good.  Bravery, self-sacrifice, redirection, playing on the bad guy’s bloodlust?  Yeah, I was down with that.
  • Again, I just sorta dig on Sentai being all about the combination of disparate elements making for a stronger whole, and this episode really leaned into that and I dig on it. “Act with wisdom, but act” to get a bit video-gamey m’self.
Ammit
  • Huntelder didn’t kill hundreds of people for his plan.  (Aleph:  That WAS nice) I like the villains being bad, but I really hate the idea of masses being murdered for me to enjoy this show. (Sono: Look we can kill hundreds of people, but not on screen with a gun.)
  • The plushies were amazingly adorable!
  • I loved the Leo dummy, because I quipped to myself mentally something about Leo being replaced by a dummy and that tickled me. I’m really sour on this guy.
  • Tusk’s first plan was cool and I was impressed by his recall of their first Huntelder encounter.

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono

Next week is a Mario episode???? Finally????????? AND it looks like Naria is going to get involved? I’m pretty excited about this. I’d love to see Mario kind of plant some seed of there being more to humans or life on Earth in general (since we’re dealing with much more than just humans) than she and the Dethgalien think, and have that lead to Naria considering new plans or ways to double-cross or get rid of the jerks she’s stuck with. (Between this and the Shibuya arc over in Ghost, I am being spoiled. Someone is catering directly to my wants.)

Aleph
  • OH MAN, NARIA.  I mean wev Mario, but NARIA’S GONNA DO SOME STUFF.  Kick folks around!  YEAH!
  • Amu and Leo gonna eventually have a team-up episode all about how friggin’ weird and wild cats are.
Ammit

We have to get a new team leader to push around Naria because I am remaining pessimistic about how they’ll handle her next week.

Quick Reflexes – Questions in reaction to this bit of Zyuohger.

  1. Leo and Tusk both have very different day-to-day problem solving methods, that affect the way they approach larger problems in battle. Which do you relate to more? Do you think one way is better than the other?

Rough Demandes

Was there anything that rubbed you the wrong way?

Ammit

  • I really didn’t like seeing Hotaru in her very underwear-like pj’s. I get that people sleep like this, but she’s a kid and we don’t need to see every intimate detail of her private life. We don’t see much with any of the other characters.
  • Saturn is a Sailor guardian called upon in emergencies and her one tactic is to destroy the entire Universe. That seems a bit much to me.

Sono

  • Seconding on Hotaru in her jammies. A lot of the framing of it was just really creepy. It feels odd for Hotaru, who would likely need to be more covered up due to her illness, to just kind of be hanging around in her underwear? At least a nightgown might have felt a bit more appropriate? But the combination of her in her underwear and also on her knees the way she was, was just not a great visual.
  • The use of “power-up”

Frills

What were some lovely things you found especially catching?

Ammit

  • Usagi pours the Grail’s contents onto herself to transform into Super Sailor Moon
  • Chibi-Usa’s elation about Super Sailor Moon and her warm memories of home were really touching. Her feelings really came across for me.
  • Everyone is FLYING!
  • The jokes about Haruka and Michiru’s extravagant lifestyle were so good.

Sono

  • The jokes about the damage to the apartment and how Haruka would have to pay for it were also really funny and definitely felt like the sort of humor I’m used to from the outers.
  • Chibiusa was great this episode. She’s a strong little lady torn between a lot of people she really cares about (Her old best friend going out to kill her new best friend?!) and she’s making tough choices and I”m proud of her for doing the right thing. You go, small lady.

Focus

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Sono

Given that this is the start of what I’ve been told is a 3-part arc, I’m not sure if this episode has a huge message, but I want to focus in on Shibuya and the fact that YOU DON’T HAVE TO FORGIVE PEOPLE WHO TREAT YOU BADLY. Shibya’s mom belittles and PHYSICALLY KICKS him. He’s totally right to hate her for that, and Takeru’s got no right to tell him not to hate her just because she’s his mother. I hope this doesn’t end with him reconciling with his mother. I hope she tries to and Shibuya shuts her down and stays with his found family and doesn’t have to deal with her anymore. He’s a sweet kid and he doesn’t deserve to be treated like that.

Aleph

I sorta wonder if the thing they’re working on, in that vein, is something about how they want to talk to the kids about how, hey, your parents are people, too?  Who had whole lives before you and that you gotta understand those lives so you can maybe understand them?  I mean, I’m with Sono on the whole “you don’t owe anyone your forgiveness and certainly not when they’re still being d-bags to you” thing, but I do wonder if by the end it won’t lead to a moment of understanding and transformation instead?  Like, maybe Shibuya never quite forgives his ma, but comes down to “I get you now” and she can change and they can work toward some kind of equilibrium?  I always like that sort of thing a TON more than I like “forgive or you suck even though the person you’re meant to forgive did a lot of things that are honestly pretty unforgivable”.  Stuff puts my hackles up, but this isn’t Laser Knees.

Ammit

Woments

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

Sono

  • The new shot of Alain in the OP is beautiful and speaks volumes to the leap his character has made.
  • Did we really just get a Shibuya episode?! We’re getting a whole Shibuya arc?! I cannot believe we are actually developing this kid as a character and I pray we do the same with Narita. What a good show.
  • This episode really merged episode-plot and the over-arching plot beautifully right from the start while Shibuya has to step out to answer a call from his mom in the middle of Alain being like “HEY HERE’S A BUNCH OF PLACES THEY CAN KILL US FROM.”and really having all of this unfolding side-by-side.

Aleph

  • When is Takeru gonna memory-flash on Onari? I wanna see punk-rock Onari deciding he wants enlightenment.
  • I share your excitement about Shibuya getting an episode and for the way they seem to be tying it into Takeru’s development.  Good going, show.  Nicely done.
  • Speaking of?  I was not anticipating seeing Igarashi again.  Like at all.  I like that guy and hope we keep seeing more of people from earlier bits.

Ammit

  • The shout out to Fumi at the start of the episode was great.
  • Alain going on about how much he loves the world.
  • Alain’s morpher having a fully functional projection feature

Animal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

Sono

Man, Arakawa worked his magic on this one. Gag villain character episode and it still had emotions running high. There’s a lesson in there about not cutting corners, and doing what’s right over personal gain. Also just don’t blackmail and manipulate people who are in desperate situations because that’s AWFUL.

I really feel for Fuwa and Marin though. I hope late in the series We get to see them again and Marin’s had her surgery and they come to see Amu off back to Zyuland.

Ammit

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I loved seeing the righteous anger over Youthief using Fuwa. I liked Amu making the moral argument for Fuwa to not use ill-gotten gains. I think Amu came off really well and had a lot of good focus here, but it also felt incomplete. Was there something missing from her backstory that they had wanted to include? I also don’t think the moral of being honest was well enforced here. Youthief gets as far as he does by lying; it is very helpful to him. Fuwa leaves the Zyuohgers kind of bitter as he goes to return the money. It felt off.

Aleph

All I can think is that Arakawa is big on the idea that socialized medicine is a good idea and/or that Breaking Bad (or similar shows) are pretty good.  ‘Cuz with some kind of guarantee of care, this situation wouldn’t have come up.
Also, hey, a thing about how abusing the power of lies is bad and how being a liar basically means you’re a jerk, even if–in the words of every kid I’ve ever known including myself–”I’m not lying, I’m tricking” sounds good, but, no, it’s still a thing a jerk does.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono

I’d really hoped we’d learn a little about Amu’s life the way we have about Sela, Leo, and Tusk, but there was nothing concrete. She makes a comment about Fuwa and Marin getting along really well, which  might hint at her having an older brother she doesn’t get along with, but nothing was actually stated.

Ammit
  • I was expecting to learn something about Amu’s family because she seemed so touched by siblings who showed great care for each other, but it wasn’t there.
  • I wish Amu had vowed to help out Fuwa a bit. I don’t know if that’s unreasonable, but it would have been nice. She doesn’t really have bills to pay. She can get a job.
  • The ending felt a little unfinished. Was there more they had wanted to do or say?

Aleph
  • Yeeeeeeeah.  That ending was bleak.  “Hey, best of luck getting the money you need to make it so your sister doesn’t die horribly of an incurable disease”.  Glad the animal at the end of the episode were penguins because I definitely needed something adorable after that.  We’d best see Fuwa and his sister again later on, s’all I’m saying ‘cuz I’m gonna be worried about ‘em.
  • Mostly I’m mad at the idea that Amu, who always struck me as the most sorta devil-may-care about other peoples’ money and comfort wouldn’t bust out with something like “It’ll bum your sister out if she finds out you got the money this way… so we won’t tell her.  You do what you gotta do, dude.”  He can still have the face turn, and I know that would give the “it’s cool to steal if you really need it” message which is probably not what you might call exactly pro-social, but…  I mean, come on.  His sister’s DYING and there’s a cure and it’s a lack of money keeping her from it.  If that’s not an indictment of the whole system, I don’t know what is.
  • And, yeah, I would have liked a bit more about Amu.  She’s ostensibly at the center of the episode but the Dethgalien and Fuwa seem to step in and try to steal the spotlight, sorta making Our Heroes almost incidental to the story except for how they solve the problems and act as this poor kid’s conscience.

Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono
  • Naria was kind of a badass this episode. I guess this thief guy was too much even for her infinite patience. It did subtly sort of show that Naria’s just as strong and cunning as everyone else in the room. I hope she gets to make better use of it soon.
  • Thankfully this episode was much better to Amu than the last one was to Leo. (And that now everyone knows not to let Leo near any women ever.) Amu was really sweet and I’d love to see her get more episodes where she gets to show off her good side instead of just spending a lot of Yamato’s money and bothering everyone.
  • Amu snapping was fantastic. I’m glad to see that kind of fire in Amu, who’s been pretty passive about everything up to now. I know she’s got fight in her, but to really see her feel deeply about something and getting angry because people she cared about were being exploited was really nice.
Ammit
  • Amu is so upset that she can’t have cake. Her inner monologue reaction was nigh hilarious.
  • I felt like Amu called me out for being pedantic
  • Remembering Leo is a lech was good, especially how it was framed.
  • The relationship between Fuwa and Marin is destroying me and I love every bit of it.
  • Amu was taking point in this episode so much that she was even at the front of the lineup when they transformed. Has that happened before in this show? That was really cool.
  • The song when they destroyed little Youthief was cool.
  • Naria had so much attitude this episode. That was great.
Aleph
  • It really was super-nice to see Naria getting to do a thing. She had a personality and it was lovely!  She’d best put that stuff to use in her own plots with the quickness.
  • The bad guy was just this side of fun.
  • Amu getting to do stuff was great!  I really want to see this stuff pay off later on for her.
  • Clever use of everyone’s powers, even if it wasn’t exactly groundbreaking

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono

Hopefully some more exposition on Amu. I’m really curious about her home life. We know a little about everyone except her.

Ammit

Naria will continue to get more lines and little bits with the up and coming Dethgalien.

Aleph

I hope Naria just straight-up punches Genis in the face because, look, if HE’S getting bored with this stuff and he’s the one making the game go, maybe she should take over?  She seems to have some stuff to say and could probably have some fun herself.

Quick Reflexes – Questions in reaction to this bit of Zyuohger.

  1. Was it condescending or considerate of Amu to let Marin and Fuwa have the cake?
  2. Was Arakawa mocking the Golgom Plot with Youthief’s original half-baked plan?
  3. What does Genis’ Meritocracy say about him and the Dethgalien?

  • Pluto’s first act is to hug Chibiusa, and that’s super sweet. Even reborn, that part of herself is still there.
  • I liked the red-eye effect for possession. It was just kind of unsettling and creepy and it worked well for me here.
  • I felt so bad for Chibiusa when she saw Hotaru’s arm. Like… Look, she’s what… 10? 12? She has no idea how to react to seeing an ENTIRE ARM OF EXPOSED MUSCLE AND ROBOT PARTS. And she immediately realized that running away probably hurt Hotaru’s feelings because she remembered it was something that Hotaru was self-conscious about.
  • Usagi asking Chibiusa if she’s okay taking the mission to keep an eye on Hotaru, and acknowledging that it might be hard and things may happen that will be difficult for Chibiusa to deal with

Ammit

  • I really like the way Takeuchi’s conceit of “incarnation” allows the Guardians to act as if they are just picking up where they had left off. Pluto is back and remembers everything from before and her exposition really helped me buy into what’s going on here. Haruka and Michiru are desperate to make up for lost time because Neptune and Uranus have a duty to which they are committed and they don’t want to let anything stop them from fulfilling that duty.
  • Professor Tomoe’s background makes him terrifying. He really is a mad scientist and i never expected this in Sailor Moon, but it sure is exciting and unsettling.
  • The two-in-one Witch Cyprine is really cool. She has a great design, she is super strong and the splitting is really cool. She also has a GREAT design. I also really like that she is a Level 999 Death Buster.
  • The Moon Family Love Huddle was beautiful and I was so happy to see the Holy Grail make it’s appearance as an enchanted item for Usagi to use in battle.

Focus

What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Ammit

This reminds me of a funeral in Kuuga. It was in the first few episodes and Godai gained resolve to keep fighting because he wanted to see a young person smiling again and wanted to protect others’ smiles as well.

That’s been done and it was fascinating to see a character resolve to move on and be happy for their own sake. Yes Alain resolves to fight to make Ganma world like the human world, but that’s because that is what he wants. He can appreciate how beautiful life and the world can be even with the less savory bits included in the estimation and he wants to take that home.

Sono

Grieving suuuucks. It’s painful and confusing and it’s just the worst. Especially if you’ve never done it before. Watching other people grieve can be deeply confusing, because everyone grieves differently and if you don’t know what you’re doing you feel like you’re doing it wrong.

Death, especially when you’re unfamiliar with it, is confusing and scary. To confront it is hard whether it’s the first time or whether you’ve faced it before. The parallels between Yuki and Alain over this episode were heartbreaking and touching, and they both just wanted a chance to say goodbye. It was really very, very well handled.

Sarracenian’s Focus

This episode def also follows up on the main theme of this show in general. Death and grieving is a natural process but the best way to honour the dead is also by finding one’s footing an live one’s life as best as they can and without regrets. Life may seem complicated but you can always trust yourself and those around to help you go through it.

Woments

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 moments that made them say “Woah” from this bit of Ghost

Ammit

  • Alain breaking Necrom’s limitation.
  • Saionji carrying Takoyaki in his briefcase.
  • President Bills getting popped in the mouth, especially after we learned that he and Igor are spinning some elaborate web.

Sono

  • Getting to see our whole cast grieve though, getting to see the whole city come together to remember Fumi… That was a really beautiful moment.
  • Alain’s entrance in his ugly as sin outfit eating Takoyaki to his completely badass music was way more powerful and emotional than it had any right to be with him wearing those clothes.
  • It was nice to see the Ghost and Specter base suits. I missed them. They’re good looking suits.

Sarracenian

  • “And you guys call yourselves heroes!?
  • Alain’s sweater fight is one of the most satisfying things in this show. I will concede and say def praises for the directing here. Alain fighting while eating takoyaki is so great because it’s the perfect tokusatsu moment. Making what would on paper seem silly and turn it into this great dramatic scene and culmination of this character.
  • The scene with Yuki and her dad itself is excellent.
