What are your thoughts on this episode and what if any messages came into focus for you?

Ammit’s Focus

This episode is absolutely amazing! The messages about reaching outside of ourselves and having faith in others are so strong and were played so well. In retrospect, I think Takeru killing Knight Ganma in the duel was definitely a step in the wrong direction and was stumble on the road to him completely falling on his face. It was beautiful. Our hero did wrong and the show let us and him know it. Not only did Takeru restore his faith in others to get back up and do what was right, but he had to own his mistakes and his weakness. I suppose there is another message in their to do that. Much like the 15 Heroic Eyecons, the message is a big one with many disparate parts baked into it.

Sono’s Focus

This episode had sort of a two-pronged attack going with Takeru and Makoto. From Takeru’s end, there’s the lesson of not giving in to fear, and not letting fear breed hate. Takeru was always so firm on bridging the gap between the Ganma and the living, and he was doing it! He was succeeding! And then he saw just how bad some Ganma can be, just how awful the Ganma world is, and instead of doubling down on relating to the ones he can and trying to make their world better, he starts blaming ALL Ganma for things outside of the control of most of them. He blames Akari for not doing more about a thing she barely understands, and yells at Onari for trying to diffuse the situation. He just wants to be angry and blame others and sulk, and because of that his best friend is now dead and he has to live with that and own up to the fact that his mistakes allowed this to happen and become better for it.

In the global climate we have, I think that’s very important to teach. You can’t blame individuals with no control for the problems of a system. It’s the system itself that needs to be dismantled for the sake of everyone, including the people within the system who are victims of it (Cubi, Sword Mom, Alain, Coffin Dust Folk).

And to Makoto’s credit, he’s learning from his past mistakes and trying to believe in the ideals Takeru has presented. He wants to help unify people. He wants to help. And he’s starting with someone who understands the system and how broken it is, but also someone who was kind to him and whose kindness he wants to repay.  And he’s willing to go as far and make the sacrifices he’s seen Takeru make for others.  He wants to be the kind of hero he’s seen Takeru be, and I think in the wake of Takeru giving in to fear, I’m glad there was still Makoto pushing the message of protecting the people you care about and helping others.

Aleph’s Focus

Holy eff, but this show is just all about a pro-social, anti-fascism, anti-colonialist message, isn’t it?  You get to be mad at a bad thing, but if you start just flailing around, and start to just give up and forget who you are and what you’re about, you turn either useless or monstrous and how, ultimately, it’s by channeling and trying to embody the best of humanity (here symbolized by the various virtues or ideas the Eyecons represent, like curiosity, determination, rebellion, self-knowledge, etc.) toward holding off the bad things that you get through.

Just.

Y’all, this is the halfway point and, again, this show goes harder in any 10-12 episode chunk than some series do in their whole length.  It’s got me so hype and so flippin’ angry that next week is a crossover because I want to know what happens.

Sarracenian’s Focus

–N/A–

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 23

Ammit

  • Alain dissing convenience store food at first and then going to town on the takoyaki
  • Makoto’s full bloom into really caring friend. Before now he had just softened with Takeru and had told Kanon that Alain was bad news, but now that Alain is changing Makoto is free to as well
  • Makoto calling out Takeru on his crap

Sono

  • Aria’s gonna destroy it all from the inside. This girl is on to everything and has zero patience. We already know she’s against Adel, so it’s clear she’s  going to rip everything apart and I am thrilled.
  • The way Takeru, Makoto, and Alain were handled this episode was great and all three actors really knocked it out of the park. Expressing fear through anger is a story device I’m really drawn to (ie: Shroud), and just how desperate and angry Takeru was to the point where he was questioning everything he’d ever believed in really drove home just how deeply he was affected by Ganma World. His refusal to fight alongside Alain, and his repeated cornering of Alain last episode and now kind of cement his need to blame someone, because it’s easier to handle fear and anger that way. And the fact that the eyecons all left him really cemented just how much his faith had wavered.
  • Makoto’s treatment of Alain and Takeru this episode was also fantastic and I feel like we’re finally FINALLY getting Makoto totally out of his shell and seeing other sides of him that he’s been burying in order to keep focused on his goals. And you can see how much Takeru brought that out of him with how FURIOUS he is with Takeru’s hesitations and attacks on Alain and refusal to fight. Makoto just decking Takeru straight in the damn face  for going against everything he believes in, and everything he’s caused Makoto to believe in, had so much impact, literal and narrative. And if Takeru wasn’t going to carry on that will, then Makoto was going to carry it enough for both of them. The way he fought for Alain and protected him, and went down protecting Alain and trying to give him the will to keep fighting was so touching and heartwarming. We saw so much of Makoto this episode and I’m so proud of this damn kid and how far he’s come.

Aleph

  • I get the impression that the creative team for Kamen Rider Ghost might have met “messing around” once?  Like, surely, given how popular and ubiquitous messing around can be, it’s hard to imagine they NEVER met it.  But they CLEARLY did not get along with even the idea of messing around.  I love them so much.
  • Makoto’s big, doofy smile.  Seeing this guy becoming Takeru with Alain his weakened, reluctant Makoto was so flipping charming and really shows how far Makoto’s come.
  • Takeru’s flirtation with the dark side.  It was pretty short, but it so perfectly encapsulated being just full-on DONE with all this nonsense.  He saw the horror of humanity (Ganmanity?) and shut down because eff any society that’d do that.  And then he turns it around because, look, Makoto clearly knows what he’s talking about as he and Alain are so close (just kiss already!) so there must be something good in there, so he just needs to go out and find it so he can understand.

Sarracenian

  • Surprised how much the followed on Takeru being shaken by the whole ordeal in the Ganma World. Even had a justification for why he killed the Knight Ganma which was whoa pretty cool attention to detail.
  • Yo I hope Alain’s actor gets to be in more future stuff ‘cause he is just knocking it out of the park. Def the breakout star of the show

This is our same duo from last week.

Zyuohger 06’s Monster of the Week: Gaburio LaserKnees06-Zyuohger06-GaburioAnimal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

SONO- This episode was pretty weak for me overall. Not bad, just weak. Which is fine. Every show is going to have weaker episodes. I just feel like things that should have been much more impactful, like the life-energy transfer and it’s effects on Larri, orAzald’s return, didn’t have the punch that they should have had and it took me out of the episode a lot.

AMMIT- Honestly I dozed off during a couple scenes and had to rewind to catch everything. It wasn’t gripping and engaging, but it had some strong bits. Yamato’s struggle over what happened to Larri was really sweet and earnest, even though he blew things out of proportion. I thought a lot about thematics and a few key highlights mostly watching this episode. The idea of Zyumen/animals giving up part or all of themselves for human benefit and how grateful we should be for that was something that struck me and I hope some kids thought about that watching this as well. Larri pointing out the reciprocity between him and Yamato was a really solid message to me.

ALEPH- I just really, really like Larri and I’m gonna miss him ‘til he comes back.

But, yeah, I really think the message of reciprocity and being thankful when you get an important gift is so important.  It’s great to get a gift, but if it’s causing someone hurt to give it?  Yeah, that’s not on.  You thank them or risk doing some Gift of the Magi biz to try and make it better for ‘em.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono

  • The scene with Mario was a little weak. Or a lot weak. Like he is in the next room. How does he not hear everyone shouting? I still like Mario, but he’s being really poorly utilized and I think it’s making the house scenes drag a bit.
  • This episode wasn’t bad, but I don’t feel it was all that great? It’s hard to pin down specific things, but It feels like they sort of phones in bits of this episode just to move things along. Azald put himself back together and then was just like “Lol later suckers”. Like, from what we’ve seen of Azald, wouldn’t he want to even the score with Yamato, so to speak? And the other Zyumans didn’t really get to do much, aside from the little bit where Sela heard the child. For a second I thought Tusk was going to sniff out Larri, but that didn’t happen. Even the revelation about the life-force transfer and connecting it to the Eagle Man felt a little weak. It didn’t feel like as big of a deal as it should be.
  • I still can’t deal with ZyuohGorilla please make it go away.
  • Aside from her canned line to grow the monsters, Naria had a noise this episode. Not even a word. She had an affirmative noise, and no other lines. Please save this poor alien woman she deserves better.

Aleph

  • My biggest problem is-a him, Mario.
  • Larri went away.  That’s not on, you guys.  0/10.
  • Zyuoh Wild’s weird plastic arms.  I’m cool with the gorilla and whatever, but the big horkin’ gorilla arms on the robot were just on the borderland of “hilariously awful” but just did not make it there.
  • This show needs to step up it’s music game.  There are, he admitted grudgingly, a few good tracks here and there, but they should be trying to match ToQGer.

Ammit

  •  Gorilla mech with inexplicable canon and other accouterments was odd. It was really disappointing.
  • Knowing now that Azald doesn’t need a Continue, sure saps the potency from what seemed to be a moment for Genis in the last episode.
  • Naria should be freaking out over Azald being back, or else she shouldn’t have asked about to giving him a Continue last episode

Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono

  • The little girl not being scare of Larri warmed my heart.
  • Gaburio really drew me back to Telephone-Crocodile from Abaranger, and I hope that’s what they were trying to evoke because he was a delight. I wasn’t as into Gaburio, but he brought back some fond memories. (As an aside, his voice actor, Takagi Wataru has been four past Sentai monsters, as well as an Imagin in Den-O, but what surprised me most was that he was the original voice for Rubius in Sailor Moon!)

Ammit

  • Sela is still bothered by Leo’s shouting and the show isn’t forgetting about it
  • Sela heard the little girl in danger. We need more of this.
  • Yamato tried to give back Larri’s life force/Zyuman power
  • Yamato couldn’t give back Larri’s Zyuman power
  • Larri’s grey fur looks so fantastic!

Aleph

  • Larri.  Let’s all just agree that Larri is the greatest.  Can we do that?  I’m gonna do that.  He’d be a great mentor.  More Larri.
  • Yamato trying to give Larri back his life force.  In an episode of stuff that fell kinda flat for me (not in any big way, just in general), that bit felt good.  The kid playing Yamato?  He’s got a future.
  • Zyuoh Gorilla’s gloves having limited articulation actually really made me warm to it.  Seeing those big ol’ sausage fingers move just put a smile on my face.
  • More rescuing, plz.  There’s this thing where the show’s juuuust this side of a traditional superhero narrative that’s being so interesting to me.  All the rescuing of civilians and whatnot.  It’s not a thing I’ve noticed in a lot of sentai, at least not without the civilians being directly related to the plot and I like it.

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono- Still leaning on more animal powers. At that, I’m hoping there’s a non-unleashed form for Gorilla because I cannot deal with it.

Ammit- Larri will come back late in the show. Also,We’ll see old man Eagle

Aleph- I confess, at this point, I want Eagle’s brother to have broken out to look for him and that’s what’s caused all this and then when we meet him, he wants revenge on the filthy human who stole his brother’s life.

Quick Reflexes

How do you feel about Larri’s life being permanently shortened, and how do you think it was handled by the show?

Azald is back! Given that we talked about what we thought might be coming with him gone, how are you rethinking that now?

Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!

Ammit’s View Ghost 22

I really enjoyed this episode so much. Adel’s turn was sudden and sharp. It fits that he had appeared to be the Emperor from his first appearance and we had known Javert to be loyal to him. All this was seeded long ago, quite economically, which I feel was key to there being so many big reveals and shifts here.

Was there a central message here? I’m not sure. There may be something about persistence and striving for what you want or need to do. Adel spent a lot of time to form his coup. Akari and Onari’s hard work and training paid off in them being able to hold off Knight Ganma.

Sono’s View Ghost 22

Again, since this is a climax point, I’m not sure about an overall message, but I’ve been stewing on it a few days and I’m leaning toward “Not everything is what it seems.” Ganma World is not the utopia that Takeru tried to comprehend. Alain’s brother is not the man Alain thought he was, and the power he held was reduced to literally nothing on another’s word. Lying is easy. Living and accepting truth isn’t. I’m not sure how much more I can give it than that because this episode was really dense with world building and character development instead of a real moral narrative.

Aleph’s View Ghost 22

Mmm, sweet sweet character stuff.  Just wanna bathe in it.

I think the thing I took, though, was that viciousness doesn’t have a target when it’s your ideology.  The… well, are they the Ganma or are they something else?  Anyway, the Imperial family are people who perpetuate and talk a lot of stuff about how their nonsense is logical and right and just and good and all that mess, but when you deal with vicious folks, you gotta remember that if even one of ‘em actually takes it to heart instead of just having it be the post facto rationalization for the things they wanna do?  They’re only going to wreck things.  There is no loyalty, there is no love, there is no family, there’s just winning.  And, look, if “win” is the only moral goal, eventually it’s gonna come down to “murder your family” because there’s only so many folks you can win over before you’re eatin’ your own.

Sarracenian’s View Ghost 22

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 22

Ammit

  • Ganma world is a let down
  • Takeru killed Knight and that was a moral failing, but I don’t think Ghost’s creatives recognize that

Sono

  • Literally my only problem will be of Sword-Mom Ganma doesn’t come back. I need her living in the basement and being exasperated with Cubi and wanting to fight all the time and learning what fun is. I need this like I need air to breathe. I talked about this with someone over the week and I’d love to see Aria bring her back and have Sword-Mom helping Aria run both side of the con. If I can’t have her back on Takeru’s side, I’d love to see her working with Aria.

Aleph

  • Glad to see we’re all a bit ambivalent about Sword Ganma because while I LOVE that fight with Sword Ganma.  I really, really did.  Having her get explodo’d because she wants that fight where your life is on the line and he gives it to her, but the more I think about it, our boy, at least implicitly, can’t die.  Or the rules around that feel a bit fuzzy when it comes to ghost weapons.  And, sure, Sword Ganma can’t die because she’s not alive and hopefully they took her sword with them, but… I dunno.  I would at least have liked a thing where he pulls back and she’s all “No, I want a FIGHT.  This is the first time I’ve ever had an opponent I could respect, don’t you hold out on me.”  Because… yeah, it hit me weird.

Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger; Episode 5 – Champion of the Jungle!

Episode Writer: Komura Junko

Episode Director: Nakazawa Shoujirou

Nakazawa is a long time Sentai director going all the way back to his debut on episode 45 of TimeRanger and has done at least a few episodes of Sentai every year since with the exception of KyoRyuger. He was the lead director on Gekiranger, Shinkenger, Gokaiger and Kamen Rider Wizard (He also directed episodes of Kamen Rider Kiva and Gaim.) as well as Gekiranger, Shinkenger, and Wizard’s movies, Shinkenger vs. Go-Onger, and Gokaiger vs. Gavan.

I also just want to point out Larri’s voice actor, Ishizuka Unsho, who was Great Emperor Ra Deus in  Flashman and Jeeruda in GoGoFive, but may be more recently familiar to some viewers as Joseph Joestar in the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders anime from 2014, in which he does a lot of very similar vocal work to his voice for Larri. (Particularly using foreign words for emphasis, though Joseph primarily used English.) His “NOOOO” is pure Joseph Joestar.

Animal Instincts – Overall Thoughts about the episode & it’s message

SONO- Overcoming differences is a big thing here.Larry felt isolated and excluded by humans, so he gave up trying to relate to them. But he and Yamato have common ground and even though they didn’t get along at first they were able to understand one another when they put in a little effort. And overcoming big differences like a huge culture gap such as the ones between Humans and Zyumans will always take time and work.

I think this also kind of plays into the nature of the way a lot of humans are scared of animals. Like, I know people who are scared of dogs or cats because one badly bit or scratched them, and they’re afraid of any dog or cat doing that. The same sort of thing happened with Larri, and so he became scared of every human.

AMMIT- Yamato and the Zyumen need to work on their social skills. I was a bit surprised by their method of bringing Larri around to Yamato by sneaking him close to Larri on several occasions. It was funny, but for the impropriety of invading his space and disregarding his wishes. Boundaries are important and it is vital to instruct children that they should be firm in making known and enforcing their boundaries. Larri and Yamato’s conversation was sweet and their shared interest in connecting to and learning about others through observation was really nice. Larri really came around once he was able to observe Yamato in his natural state, behaving valiantly against a destructive aggressor. Perhaps there is a message about judging situations from afar here? That’s a valuable lesson.

ALEPH- I mostly picked up on this as a continuation/elaboration of the interconnectedness theme?  Larry and the Zyulanders all have these things in common but then Yamato is sort of out to sea and it takes a while and a lot of REALLY uncomfortable bits to help him realize that outside of fear of The Other, they’re all basically the same, what with longing for home and justice and all that.

Other’n that, though, I just really dug on the haha of having a human go out to try and become a part of human society.  Was a shame Larri wasn’t called, like, “Goodall” or something like that, to get some naturist humor in there.

Hackles Up! – Problems & Nitpicks

Sono

  • Not so much a narrative bone as just in general rubbing me the wrong way but having Yamato just keep sneaking up on Larri just kind of made me feel really bad for him because like HE’S TERRIFIED. Shoving a thing someone is terrified of in front of them IS NOT GOING TO HELP. (THANK you) Narratively, I get it and it really kind of shows how the Zyuman approach problems, which along with Larri just walking up to humans, indicates an interesting aspect of their culture and the gap between them and humans. I just felt super bad for both Larri and Yamato.
  • Still on about this Naria thing. A lot of the framing that was there last episode, wasn’t in this one. Though this episode was a lot about Azald, so that’s okay. I just really don’t want her to be the serving girl for this whole series.

Aleph

  • No, yeah, as much as we started developing stuff we might use later, Naria needs a thing quickfast. Any sort of thing. A single personality trait, please.
  • And I’m right with you about this whole “he needs to get used to a thing he’s scared of, let’s THROW IT IN HIS FACE ALL THE TIME”.  I mean, I’m glad he reacted appropriately and I also get what they were going but eeeeeeeesh.
  • Boy, that gorilla suit was… I mean, it sure was a bodysuit, wasn’t it?

Ammit

  •  With you both on scaring Larri
  • Gaburio is coming back next episode, but I’m not sure structuring it like this was the smartest way to go about making this semi-two-parter.
  • Gorilla form’s beefy bod sure is something
  • Tide Turners – Stuff you enjoyed.

Sono

  • They changed up the pacing of this episode in a way I really appreciate. They got in the mandatory robot battle, made it quick, and got it out of the way early to put a lot of time into this episode that really gave us a lot of nice character development and world building. Everything flowed really naturally and I’m glad they were willing to shake things up a bit to get the best out of this episode.
  • I really like how Leo moves? This feels like a weird comment but the actor playing Leo often keeps him very low to the ground, especially when searching for things. His movements are very much like a lion’s to a degree I haven’t noticed with the others. (How would Sela even do it?) It’s just something I appreciate.
  • In the OP introduction, I think OverTime is changing the wording every episode to reflect the animal at the center of the episode. I’ve noticed in the past it was “herd” or “pride”, and this week it was “troop”, which is a group of Gorillas. I’m not sure if this is a change in the Japanese wording or if it’s just something OT is doing, but I think it’s clever.
  • I love how when everyone finds Azald, they first react to him being made of cubes. Cubes are an absolute good for them. I just thought it was a neat reaction.
  • I do like that they drew the parallel between Yamato and Larri both being zoologists. I feel like Yamato should have mentioned that his job is similar earlier, but it was a nice thing for them to bond over. Also I love all of Larri’s square equipment. This show knows how to stick to it’s themes.

Ammit

  • The Eagle flight camera tricks, suit attachment and performance are really impressive to me. I know what they are doing, but the work is being handled so well and the editing is so tight that I can easily ignore any seams that might be showing in the grand scheme to make me believe Yamato is flying like a birdman.
  • Larri’s Spanish was cute. I liked it a lot for some reason
  • Despite complaints about some of the details of the ZyuohGorilla suit, it came off really well in the fight
  • +1 on the dramatic visor lifting. BTW, P5 involves the characters tearing a mask off their faces to call on their Persona.

Aleph

  • I keep hoping Azald’s cubiness is a thing we come back to.  Having it be a thing they comment on and a thing which feels like maybe is gonna have plot relevance later?  I approve of that a lot.
  • I just like Larry.  I’m glad he’s gonna be in at least one other episode.  He can take over for Mario, it’ll be great.
  • The move where the eagle helmet becomes a gorilla helmet?  That’s really cool and I hope the others get something like that at some point.  It’d be weird but since everyone’s connected and arguably becoming a gorilla is at least sorta related to being human (more than an eagle), it could be an interesting thing.  Though finding extremes that are quite that intense could be intense, but I’d enjoy seeing it.
  • And loath as I am to just plus-one people without adding much, I also really appreciated them changing up the pacing here.  Any time they open with the robot fight, some stuff’s gonna go down.
  • Just loved bossman denying the continue coin.  Gives him a personality, almost.

Evolutions – What do you think this show has in store for the future?

Sono- Everyone is getting a new animal power at some point. It won’t just be Yamato. Look closely at their helmets. You can see that everyone’s visor will go up like Yamato’s did if you look at them closely.

Ammit- “Re-skinned” models of Genis’s gang will come back after  after this lot is through. He treats them so little regard, I wouldn’t be shocked to learn they are fancy AI’s meant for his amusement

Aleph

  • Oh, I really really really hope so!
  • Also, we’ll be seeing Azald or AN Azald again.  He’s too good a design to explodinate.
  • Also something about how part of the reason Yamato can use the cube is because the Eagle Zoolander

Quick Reflexes

What do you think of the Zyuoh Gorilla power-up? What kind of animal power-ups would you like to see the others get?

We’re now down two sub-bosses and left with just, Cubard, our big boss Genis, and Naria, and it’s only episode 5. Where do you think our villains are going?

Kamen Rider Ghost 21 Astonishing! The Ganma World! [Over-Time] Kamen Rider Ghost - 21SD [4402EB8B].mp4_snapshot_21.41_[2016.03.11_06.53.15] Save As… to Download Episode Length 01:20:25

Before we start Sono is going to give credit where it is due:

Writer: Hasegawa Keiichi

Director: Yamaguchi Kyouhei

Action Director: Miyazaki Takeshi

Miscellaneous: Kouda Naoko, the voice of Shroud as well as Rageku from Gekiranger, was the Chivalrous knight/armor/sword Ganma!

Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!

Ammit’s View Ghost 21

I struggle to isolate a message from this episode, unless it is trust but verify or has something more to do with appearances being deceptive. Adel is spying on PapAdonis and Alain, the Ganma is Chivalrous, but then isn’t; Cubi is the key to entering Ganma world, but isn’t. Eadith or Sage is playing some sort of long game apparently and Alain is getting advice from his father which contradicts how he was raised. Overall there may be a message about relying on oneself and not others to determine your path in life. It’s a bit dense, and I like that, but it will take some time to really sort out.

Sono’s View Ghost 21

A lot of this arc is setting up for the climax of this section of the story, I think, so I’m not sure if there’s an overall message beyond the notes of Alain still not really understanding emotions, and the greater implications of his family situation.

But I think the ganma they brought this week was particularly interesting in that she has a notion of chivalry and the idea of being a knight, but also they chose to make her female. (Especially with this airing alongside an episode of Zyuohger where Sela is trying to reject Leo’s chivalry.) Coming from a conquering fascist state, where the heck would she have picked up this idea? Why was it not already beaten out of her? Did she cultivate this notion of chivalry without any reason to display it and therefore no one noticed?

I think it’s just really fascinating that we’re now exploring the ideas of individuality as innate and unpreventable, and that even the Ganma, who have cast it aside, can’t escape it. We’re seeing itn Aria and in their father, and we’re seeing it leak through in Alain. The only one who seems to truly and completely stamp it down is Adele.

Aleph’s View Ghost 21

I just really like that no matter what’s going on, we’re pointing out the inherent hypocrisy and nonsense at the heart of pretty much everything to do with the ruling classes.  They say the world works one way and then we see pretty quickly that that’s a convenient nonsense.  As the question went: why would Adonis tell Alain to follow his heart if none of them have hearts

Sarracenian’s View Ghost 22

KNIGHTS KNIGHTS KNIGHTS

(… which actually connects to something I’ve been thinking about regarding various cultures’ own folkhero traditions (this will come back to Rider I swear). I like knights lots and lots, I mean who doesn’t, but knights also do represent a sketchy idea of heroism that a lot of western hero ideals still have today to an extend, which is, the idea of “Might makes Right”, that “Might” being an inherent quality of birth and social status. Heroes of noble blood, that are “above” the common rabble, the “villeins”. They are better than most “by their nature”, thus deserve more than anyone else (we still see this today in certain American superheroes, or any story with the “Chosen One”-narrative). Knights in real life after all, were the armed extension of the aristocratic rule during the feudal eras, glorified in songs about fighting dragons and whatnot (dragons and other mythical beasts that were always in older paintings depicted to always be wimpier and more pathetic than the knights fighting them, to emphasize how power = GOOD and those without power = BAD). Some hero ideals forgo this power play. The “youxia/游侠” of China notably being chivalrous wandering heroes that anyone can be regardless of who they are. Notably too is how these heroes, are more popularly depicted in fighting real social ills of cruel bandits and warlords or most often corrupt government officials. Now, the power dynamic is more complex. Kamen Rider, and many superheroes following the Ishinomori mold, also subvert the idea of “Might makes Right”, in that, Power is explicitly a BAD thing. Power is a curse, at best a hefty responsibility, and it was not bestowed upon Rider for being born in a certain position of privilege, but a curse. An accident that shouldn’t have happened, because in a better world that kind of Power wouldn’t exist. And those that have power and actively seek to perpetuate the idea of Power being an inherent virtue, are evil or at best misguided (Kuuga does an excellent job conveying this idea).
So here in this episode we have a Ganma who based herself on knighthood, and we also see how it plays out in both directions, as both the romanticized, the chivalric ideal that knights are painted with, vs. the reality of what knights are, the subtext that their profession(?) has. A warrior with morals and code to operate on, but also the weapon of a totalitarian regime. I think in this show, that def places itself on the ideals and the positive qualities we can take from everything, its pretty obvious that at the end the chivalrous ideal will win over.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 21

Ammit

  • That Chivalrous Knight Ganma is a women and an awesome fighter, she lived and she wants to fight Takeru honorably!!!!
  • Igor mind controlling Knight Ganma was so terribly effective at showing the fascist machine’s erasure of individuality
  • Onari was right all along about the answer laying in Takeru’s heart
  • I love how Adonis is praying a bunch
  • Takeru meditating was also a great counterpoint to Adonis’ prayers. I can’t wait for the Clash of Spiritual Giants!!!
  • Akari named Cubi and he got to hang out with them right off the bat!

Sono

  • Armor Ganma was voiced by Naoko Kouda, and god like…  Man you can just… You can hear it, especially when they use the voice distortion on her. And when she was brainwashed and more evil, she definitely slipped into Rageku. Just let me have this guys. Let me have Shroud Ganma.
  • Akari named Cubi. We’re keeping him. You can’t get rid of someone once you name them. And Akari and Kanon have taken such a liking to him! Kanon complimenting his painting was so cute. I hope we redeem Armor Ganma and keep her too. Let’s amass a small army in the basement.
  • We got SO MUCH GANMA FAMILY. I know we were just talking about this over 19/20, but we spent at least half the episode with Alain’s family, learning what was up with them. King Ganma had a wife. These kids had a mom. She’s dead. And this seems to be something King Dad is clinging to. In rebuilding the world, does he want to bring her back? I know it’s been done but I’m WEAK for this sort of thing. Aria still misses Makoto and Kanon. Adele’s gonna screw it all up. And just… Alain’s face when he said the sky on Earth was blue. This actor’s got some chops because holy shit was he RADIATING hope.
  • Makoto was all smiles this episode and I can’t take it he’s cute as heck when he smiles.

Aleph

  • The idea that the Ganma are eternal was turned on its head and that’s been a thing I’ve been thinking was so from episode one.  The revelations about their relative mortality and how apparently the ruling classes are colonizing the land of the dead AND attempting to colonize the land of the living is just… yum.
  • I also kinda like the impression that Adonis is a Gendo Ikari.  I’m a sucker for that.
  • Akari doing science to it with Edison’s methodology coming to the fore.  “I know, I’ll keep doing the same thing with incremental changes and hope for a better result”.  It worked because sometimes you have to brute force that muddah, but eesh.
  • Knight Ganma.  Kinda love her, hope she sticks around.

Sarracenian

  • Eyyy this episode’s got the sort of technomysticism(/technomancy?) that fuels my very being and keeps me going. Say yes to science-fantasy. So much intrigue and fascinating lore this show builds and its fun to watch.
  • Knight Ganma KNIGHT GANMA KNIGHT GANMA. (she looks like something out of Dark Souls too. Which is good. Anything that reminds me of Dark Souls is an automatic Good.
  • ‘Eyyyy Cubi. A new Mole Beastman is a good.

-Igor strips Knight Ganma of her individuality and she goes on a rampage, indiscriminately taking soul after soul.

Before we start Sono is going to give credit where it is due:

Writer: Fukuda Takurou

Director: Watanabe Katsuya

Action Director: Miyazaki Takeshi

Watanbe Katsuya, our episode director for these two episodes, is actually a long time Super Sentai director going all the way back to Zyuranger in 1992 and did episodes of Super Sentai all the way to Go-Busters in 2012, as well as a two episodes of Kamen Rider Fourze (The Capricorn arc, be still my heart), and several Sentai summer movies (Hurricanger, Dekaranger, Goseiger, and Gokaiger), and VS movies, Magiranger vs. Dekaranger (a personal favorite), Abaranger vs. Hurricanger, and Boukegner vs. Super Sentai.

Ammit: We need to acknowledge the fight between Eitoku (Necrom), Takaiwa (Ghost) and Watanabe (Specter) at the end of 20 which was SPECTACULAR! Takeshi is the Action Director and I’m curious about just how involved he would have been in the choreography of the fight.

I asked Chris about this and he said: In all honesty, I don’t have 100% confirmation. However, a quick search seems to imply Miyazaki was a suit actor before becoming an action director. Also, Zyuohger’s Action Director was most Sentai Reds from Gaoranger until Gokaiger, before becoming an action director for Go-Busters onwards. Therefore, I’m pretty sure Miyazaki does work for Japan Action Enterprise along with the suit actors. As for the choreography, I’ve not heard anything. I assume it’s some sort of collaboration, with the director having the final say. During Wizard, Seji Takaiwa had a double with a dancing  background for some of Wizard’s moves. This may be a case of the action director having ideas that Takaiwa was physically incapable of doing.

Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!

Ammit’s View Ghost 19-20

Life is a bit more nuanced than we’d like to believe. You really have to look at all the facts and weigh everything to reach a satisfactory conclusion for yourself. Takeru and Paint were both open to each other, but it took some serious effort for Paint to come around and trust Takeru. Prince Alain is a great foil to the pair because he is so much more steeped in the fascist ideology and yet he is so much more familiar with the concept of Friendship though he knows such a twisted version of it.

Sono’s View Ghost 19-20

Friendships take work. You’re not always going to see eye to eye, you’re not always going to want the same things. Sometimes the things you want will conflict entirely. But if you put in the effort, you get rewarded with someone who gets you and who will stand by you.

The contrast between the work Takeru put in befriending the painting Ganma, alongside Kanon trying hard to break through the walls Alain has put up and the background bickering of Akari and Onari all paralleled with Alain forcing Makoto to be his friend by brainwashing him into being a submissive puppet really drives home just how little Alain really knows about friendship and emotions, and I feel like that’s going to make it even more satisfying when we do break through and have him realize just how much he cares and wants others to care for him.

Aleph’s View Ghost 19-20

Definitely took away a very similar set of morals from ‘em.  Ultimately these episodes seemed to be about making sure you know your own soul so you can reach out or be open to those of others.  And all the while it gave a really pleasant exploration of what friendship does and does not look like and also how it can help you to grow OR help you grow into something you don’t want to be (lookin’ at you Prince CoDependent).

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 19-20

Ammit

19

  • Akari running all her tests
  • Kanon goes to handle her own business like a boss
  • Akari digging the Ganma’s art
  • Meat-puppet Makoto is so creepy and unsettling in the scene by the water
  • Alain’s refusal to hurt Kanon was interesting. They really are slowly seeding Alain’s turn and I am enjoying the journey very much.
  • Benkei’s message to Takeru

20

  • Kanon’s boldness and tenacity
  • THE FIGHT
  • Takeru and Paint body-shielding each other
  • Paint Ganma surviving
  • SAGE is Magistrate Eadith?!?!?!?
  • Kanon tackling and holding onto Specter to wake up her big bro
  • NOBUNAGA and makoto’s other Eyecons helping out Takeru and Kanon

Sono

  • KANON AINT TAKIN’ $#IT!!! This is the kind of stuff I’ve wanted from Kanon. Stepping, up, getting shit done on her own. She’ll step into the line of fire for her brother and her friends. She’ll take the big risks confronting Alain on her own. She still believes in Alain, and she’s trying to wrap her head around this betrayal, because it is a betrayal to her. She knows an Alain that we haven’t really seen yet, and she’s trying to reach out to that, but she is not having any of his shit either. He did a bad thing and she’s going to keep hounding him until he makes it right, and she makes that crystal clear. But she WANTS to save him. She wants to keep believing in him. I LOVE THIS GIRL.
  • Akari digs abstract art. I’m not huge on abstracts myself (though I like abstract form a lot better than abstract expression) but it really suits her since there’s a sort of mathematical logic to abstract form. Also having Akari being the one really appreciating art feels nice because god knows that scientific people can be the first to reject art. I appreciate so much of what this show does with Akari.
  • Still really loving the parallel between Takeru’s “OKAY BUT LET’S STOP FIGHTING AND TALK AND BE FRIENDS” and Alain’s “You’ll do whatever I tell you and say yes to everything I say and that makes us friends.” I’m really enjoying how hard they’re using Takeru to drive home just how MESSED UP Alain’s “friendship” with possessed-Makoto is. Takeru’s hitting a lot of those old Gentaro feels.
  • Circling back on Fumi and Alain’s takoyaki issues. I just love that he’s really really freaked out by what seems to be the concept of eating round food. I’m really curious as to the cultural significance of eyecons because of this. I mean they toss Ganma eyecons around like they’re candy, but also these are the inhabitants of their world, and the heroic eyecons are clearly a big deal to them. We got a lot of interesting information on Ganma world and Alain’s family this week, and I just really want to know more.
  • We didn’t kill Paint Ganma. I’m pleased by this. I hope we’re actually like… keeping him. He will live in the basement ghost lab and be our friend.

Aleph

19

  • It was really nice to see that there was a kind of theme to the objects getting painted on Paint Ganma’s free time. It’s a nice touch. (and, honestly, a LOT of the people who get attacked by Ganma: keep an eye out for the color red)
  • Akari.  Just… just Akari. Every little thing she does is magic, y’all.
  • Alain doing that whole “Hey, human world. How messed is this place?” thing. Love it.

20

  • Paint Ganma!  He is not dead which can eternal lie!  You were supposed to be the sacrifice, but instead you’re gonna stick around to give us that third dimension between science and spirituality in our sidekick cast: the individual soul. So excited, y’all.
  • I actually really appreciate how long puppet-Spectre went on, tho.  It wasn’t done quite how I’d want with Kanon saving the day all on her lonesome, but she at least got to be integral to the group-hug-o-redemption.  Group hug of exorcism?  Sort-of?  Since he’s already a soul?
  • Oh, yeah, and finding out that he left his heart (along with the rest of him) in Ganma World.

-Takeru encounters a painting Ganma that keeps trying to paint Onari’s head, but otherwise isn’t harmful.

-Akari is shocked that Takeru is trying to talk to the Ganma and befriend it instead of destroy it and calls him naïve for it.

-Kanon doesn’t want to further burden Takeru who she can see has his own problems, so she goes to find Makoto on her own.

-Igor uses a Ganma Eyecon to possess a European male in one of the buildings that Paint Ganma put under its artistic influence.

-Alain has a disturbing conversation with himself while controlling meat-puppet Makoto down by the river.

-Alain tells Mrs. Fumi, the Takoyaki lady about his perfect father who rules over their world. Mrs. Fumi tells Alain she doesn’t understand why he isn’t working hard then since his dad sounds like such a productive champ. Mrs. Fumi pegs Alain as an idol or celebrity or entitled rich kid when he speaks of being from a different world.

-He almost eats Takoyaki, but can’t. He goes to leave but Kanon shows up and asks for him to bring back Makoto.

-Takeru comes along and talks to Paint Ganma who can’t control their desire to create, partially because such things are not allowed in Ganma World because a perfect Utopia doesn’t need such frivolity, Alain says.

-Prince Alain attacks Takeru so he will stop interfering and Kanon yells at them both to stop fighting. Takeru asks where Makoto is and Alain calls him to join the fight. Kanon gets involved and stops the fight by standing in front of Takeru when Meat-Puppet-Makoto is ordered to deliver a serious blow.

-Igor roughs up Paint Ganma and Takeru protects him, explain to Igor that they really can be friends. Takeru beats Igor but the Ganma run off.

-At Daitenkuu, Takeru explains that he believes he can get through to Paint and even Alain and be friends with them. Makoto did it before and Paint Ganma has a heart and something they love, so it has to be possible. Onari and Akari strenuously object but BENKEI encourages Takeru for his resolve and determination in the face of such fervent opposition. BENKEI encourages him to listen to what others have to say and be open to seeing more than just his perspective as he remains steadfast in what he currently believes.
