RX124 Preshow: Kamen Rider Ghost 07-08 Reactions and Questions

The deadline for submitting feedback to be aired on -RX! 124 is Thursday December 3, 2015 2:00pm PST, but we welcome feedback anytime after that as well in our comments section, in or inbox or through Twitter or on Tumblr.

First off, I really enjoyed this Ghost two-parter. The whole thing was done really well. It felt familiar and refreshing because it was been about two months since we left Drive in the rear view mirror with its frequent “traditional” two-part episodes. The “standard” two-parter is one of my least favorite aspects of Kamen Rider. The structure of Ghost so far has been gloriously Showa-spirited, so one-shot that having this bigger story felt good, it was like getting a Rider feast. I look forward to more two-parters sprinkled in the series and maybe even a longer arc! I love this show so much. It is so fun and so enjoyable. Mostly. A sticking pint for me is Makoto’s apparent Sister Complex.

Narukami's Fight Card

“It’s only natural.”

We get this compelling pathos. Makoto is worked over a bit by Saionji and then shifts immediately to thinking that his trust in Ryu Tenkuuji had been misplaced. He goes on this spell of not really knowing what to think anymore. Makoto is so clearly conflicted and it was riveting to see him struggle with articulating his confusion and anger to the son of the man who condemned him and his sister to hell for 10 years. Makoto feels like Takeru and the others abandoned him and Kanon and what’s more, Takeru’s father, someone he believed in betrayed him and his sister. By the end of the episode we see Makoto making a vow to a reticent Kanon, which is what dropped the cement pellet into my gut. I have a bad feeling about how Makoto regards his little sister.

I’m sure that the intention is there. I think Ghost’s creatives want me to feel unsettled by Makoto imbalance. He is obviously off-kilter. The conversation Makoto has with Saionji early in 08 sowed and manured and watered the seeds of Makoto’s hyper sensitivity regarding Kanon. Obviously I have never experienced something like he has, but the fact that Makoto tells Takeru he doesn’t deserve to speak his little sister’s name and nearly goes into berserker mode because of it fully set in bloom the garden that expresses his unhealthy relationship with his sister. Going back to that final scene, I am hopeful that Ghost’s creative team will give Kanon agency and continue to let her voice her feelings. How can Makoto actually, maturely, respectfully have a relationship with Kanon if he doesn’t consider how she feels? It feels like Makoto treats Kanon like a possession at this point and that really scares me for the both of them. That is a path that can only lead to sorrow. I am happy to be made uncomfortable by Makoto’s personal arc and the arc of the Makoto-Kanon relationship as long as it spends the appropriate amount of time in each stage and ends in a healthy place.

Anyway, enough of my thoughts. What do you think?

What do you think about Makoto having a sister complex? Am I reading this correctly, does Makoto in fact have a sister complex? How do you feel a main character in Ghost having a Sister Complex?

  1. First I want to say Ghost has been amazing and is easily going to make my top 5 if it keeps going as well as it has been. And that listening to this podcast makes me think much more in depth than I probably normally would because I am enjoying it so much. I can see its flaws and strengths much clearly.

What do you think about Makoto having a sister complex? Am I reading this correctly, does Makoto in fact have a sister complex? How do you feel a main character in Ghost having a Sister Complex?

    – I am not entirely sure he does. It may be too early to tell. Having gone through such a traumatic event with his sister and be the only one to come out of it intact would make you slightly over protective of her. Especially given the unclear context of the situation. And he knows Saionji has something to do with the eyecons and the Ganma. Makoto probably fears he may be working an angle to get his hands on Kanon as she is an eyecon of some sort. Makoto also probably feels guilty that he somehow came out alive and well and that his sister didn’t. And he’d do anything to protect and revive her because of that guilt. I don’t think he is disregarding her feelings. She just wants him to open up more. At least that is what has been shown. There will probably be a later discussion on if she actually wants to be revived but I don’t think the thought has occurred to her yet.

What issues did you have with Ghost 07 and 08?

    – The only issue I had is a very small one that was corrected given the right context of its use. And that was Takeru’s way of thinking that he hasn’t lost if he doesn’t think he lost. In the flashback scene he clearly lost the match and that is okay. Losing is okay. It is getting back up and continuing to try that is important. And that is a lesson that should be taught. But I understand now that that scene was only meant to set up the later fight against Specter. But the difference is… That way of thinking works in that context cause he hadn’t actually lost at that moment. He had lost before but he got back up and continued to fight unlike the last time when he ran away. That was my only issue as these episodes were great.

What were some of your favorite thing is this episode?

    – I really enjoyed the training scene in episode 7. Just seeing the protagonist of a story strive to get better is always nice and refreshing. I also really enjoyed the way Takeru escaped from Specter in episode 8. Using Newton to pull the cars in to block the attack was cool. But the suit acting during that moment was incredible to. I could feel Takeru’s sadness, regret, and confusion over not being able to help his childhood friend just by how he never looked up while blocking. He head was lowered in defeat because he couldn’t help or understand Makoto’s feelings.

Do you think Saionji or Aran was possessed for 99+ days and that is why they are doing what they are doing?

    – I don’t believe Saionji is possessed. Aran probably is because he called Saionji human in his conversation with Makoto as if he himself wasn’t human. And they wouldn’t bring that fact up if it wasn’t going to play some part down the line.

Do you believe Saionji’s story about Ryu Tenkuuji being the one who wanted to experiment on humans?

    – I would like to because it would be an interesting twist. Especially concerning Takeru and his faith in his father and him being a hero in his eyes. It would shake him up and really force him to dig deep within himself to get past it. It could also explain how some of these eyecons and their heroes aren’t exactly heroic. Just thought to be.

Do you think Kanon could disallow Makoto to henshin somehow?

    – I am not sure she has the ability to. She is hosted within a Ganma eyecon. Her eyecon is different from the one he uses to transform. She could possibly somehow lodge herself in his belt prevent her removal but we haven’t seen her being able to move on her own. Or if the Ganma eyecons are even compatible with the Drivers.

What message did you get from this episode?

    – The message I got from episode 7 was that getting up after defeat is what is truly important. That losing is okay as long as you continue on doing your best. What I got from episode 8 is don’t give up on childhood friends… I think. I am not entirely sure there was a message. The writers were just trying to push the story a little further in this episode.

Are the helper robots too helpful? Do you like their multiple functions? Does the Spider-Lantern’s spectral illumination take anything away from Akari making the Shiranui blaster?

    – Helper robots are best used when they are used by the supporting cast. Especially when used as a means to defend themselves. And They did that well. It allowed Onari and Akari to aquire an eyecon all by themselves and that was great. The multiple functions are nice as well. It makes them useful to multiple people in multiple situations. As for the spider lantern’s ability. I don’t think it takes away from Akari’s invention. I am not sure when the Movie War takes place but Akari is still shown to be using the blaster in it so it is still used. Also it allows multiple people to be able to see ghosts. If the team were to split up and both needed a way to expose ghosts then it is nice to have two ways of doing it.

What is the deal with Makoto’s sister complex? What does that mean in anime and tokusatsu and what does it tell you about the show and its creatives?

    – I don’t think he has one. And definitely not in the same context it is used for most anime. That can lead to a whole other thing that I am hopeful Ghost won’t go anywhere near. Gou had much more of a sister complex. And really, if you compare the two you can see why Makoto doesn’t necessarily have one. Gou did things to “protect” his sister but it completely disregarded Kiriko in every way. And Kiriko is much more capable of defending herself than Kanon is at this moment.

Do you have questions for us? Do you have any comments for us regarding Ghost?

When do you think Onari was brought into the picture? They haven’t shown him in any of the flashbacks if I recall correctly. Who do you think placed him in charge of the temple? Who do you think placed Takeru in his care? Did you enjoy more involvement from Shibuya and Narita? Do you think Kanon might not actually be Kanon inside the eyecon?

Hope you all had a great holiday if you celebrate thanksgiving.
