What, if anything, is being said about the world and our place in it in this episode? Ghost deals with the idea of Icons and Great Men, in a way that makes focusing narrowly on obtaining tangible objects relating to them important, but what makes a person great? What does that mean?

Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!

Ghost 11’s Macro Message According to Ammit:

I don’t really think I can glean a direct message from this episode, but I think the marked shift in Makoto’s attitude after Takeru saved Kanon serves as clear demonstration that sometimes people need to have their needs met in order to fully function as a person. Fear, distress and trauma can and twist a heart into something rigid, jagged and impenetrable, and that can be undone by love and kindness.

Ghost 11’s Macro Message According to Sono:

I’m not sure if I can put a real macro thing into this episode because it was very much a climax to the events thus far. But I think there is a good quiet underlayer of not giving up hope, even when things seem hopeless. I think bits of it could have been executed a little better, but both Takeru, and to a greater extent Makoto, lost hold of what they needed to reach their goal, but in the end they came through.

I think there’s also a nice bit of “it’s okay to rely on others” for Makoto in his reconciling with Takeru, which is a favorite fall-back message of mine.

Ghost 11’s Macro Message According to Cannibal Sarracenian:

Nothing to add now.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 11

  • Saionji’s NOT-Death. IF he is dead, it rocks that he went out like a punk because of his arrogance. I doubt he is dead and I’m prognosticating that he will come back later in the show and it will be spectacular.
  • The clip scene inside the mandala/Divine Eye was BEAUTIFUL. I’m floored by the craft-work to put those things in previous episodes and re-presenting them here. This episode is the culmination of everything that came before it and nothing has been wasted!
  • Takeru is so noble and heroic in giving up his sure bet for Kanon’s sake.

  • Everything about Makoto in this episode. All of the guilt came crashing down on him, even the guilt he’s clearly been bottling up over fighting with Takeru. I’m hugely weak for both the hopeless regaining hope and siblings so Makoto finding Kanon with everyone and that whole scene of them being reunited and them walking away together at the end just tore me open. I would have liked to see more of Kanon being a badass as an eyecon, but whatever this is fine. This show is playing right into everything I want.
  • AKARI. Akari has spent this whole episode with an untreated sprained ankle and she’s STILL GETTING SHIT DONE. Finding eyecons, taking care of Kanon, worrying about Takeru, running all over… Akari cannot be stopped.
  • Also Akari gave Kanon her coat. Kanon leaves with Akari’s coat. I don’t know why I’m excited about this I just want more of them together.

  • Yay yay yay wow things happening. More breadcrumbs and intrigue that bring in so many interesting story implications and in a way that doesn’t bluntly spell it out that there is intrigue and feel frustrating like other Neo-Heisei shows tend to have.
  • Really digged the first half. Makoto really got to deliver a lot of good emotional scenes all done really well. Some people have said the reconciliation of Takeru and Makoto felt too quick, but I thought with  the characters as presented it felt just “right” as Makoto despite how his extreme dedication hasn’t really went off the deep end enough for this to come across as too radical, plus they did give time enough for akoto to realize his mistakes and not to mention the actor did a fine job with these scenes. Really heartfelt.
  • The fight between Ghost and Spectre vs. JAVERT was great. Again to play my grump bit, I’m still not totally into the form changing in general, but it was decent form-changing fight.

In keeping with Ms. Akari’s love of the empirical, the following contains observable information from the events of the day Akari received a set of injuries and Takeru and Onari set up the Daitenkuu temple as a headquarters for staging paranormal investigations.

11 Magnificent! The Divine Eye!

Writer: Fukuda Takurou

Diector: Morota Satoshi

Action Diector: Miyazaki Takeshi

Ganma: Javert and the Kundali!

New Heroic Eyecon Summoned: None

Miscellaneous: Takeru meets Kami-Sama

-22 days left

-Takeru wonders at the barrier. Yurusen gets uncannily burnt when trying to pass though it. Makoto throws a temper tantrum and Javert steels his resolve to stop Saionji.

-Saionji places the 15 Heroic Eyecons on one of his pieces of Ganma Eye symbol stationary and puts a drop of blue liquid from a dropper like he has done before. The 15 Heroic Eyecons float in a circle in front of the Monolith and Saionji asks for the power to rule over everything.

-Sage enters the room and sees Saionji particlized and sucked in to the Monolith.

-Akari awakens and struggles to get up because her ankle became injued in the aftermath of the forcefield’s shockwave, but makes her way outside.

-Sage exposits that only someone with a belt can use the 15 Eyecons for a wish. A golden mandala studded with symbols/writing repesenting the Eyecons appears, phases though the lab and brakes the barrier.

-Seeing the barrier has vanished everyone heads for the temple. Takeru bumps into Akari, gets pulled up into the mandala and wishes for Kanon’s life from the child-like voice within the mandala.

-Prince Aran is miffed to see that Javert called forth Kundali from one of his successfully Ganma Eye Smbol festooned sites. The Kundali attack the mandala, but are unable to affect it and fall away.

-Takeru brings Kanon with him and there is a bitter-sweet reunion as his friends gather around and ask him why he saved Kanon instead of himself. Makoto comes along and gratefully calls Takeru naïve. Kanon thanks Takeru, but their peaceful moment is interrupted by the mandala ejecting the 15 Heroic Eyecons and vanishing.

-Akari and Takeru easily find BILLY THE KID and MUSASHI. Akari takes care of Kanon as Takeru, Makoto and the others spread out to gather the 15 Heroic Eyecons.

-Onari is frantically gathering with Heroic Eyecons with Shibuya and Narita, heedless of the Kundali flying around. Takeru warns him that it is coming close and they both dodge it many of the Heroic Eyecons falling loose. Javert picks up two and demands that Takeru hand over the rest

-Takeru refuses to give Javert the Eyecons and Makoto stands at his side to help him. Javert transforms, saying he will educate the whelps. Makoto asks Takeru if he is ready. Takeru affirms his belief in himself and Makoto says he believes in him too and they transform together to take on Javert.

-Ghost and Spectre have an awesome fight with Javert with help from their monastic comrades who toss them Heroic Eyecons throughout the fight, enabling them to change tactics against Javert. We get a double Rider Kick Omega Drive, but it is intercepted by a Kundali which explodes instead of Javert.

-Prince Aran tells Javert to fall back. He hesitates, but remembers his place and complies leaving the Riders to deal with the Kundali. Yurusen calls the Ghostriker and somehow Makoto gets his bike too. They ride around drawing fire from the Kundali until Takeru call s for Captain Ghost.

-Takeru gets thrown from Captain Ghost who is attached to a Kundali’s face, gnawing at it I am sure. Makoto rides up the back of a Kundali and defeats it with an Omega Fang. Captain Ghost defeats its Kundali with a blast from its tail.

– MUSASHI’s Eyecon comes out of Takeru’s belt and it calls to him, telling him to strike. Takeru asks if MUSASHI will lend him its strength. Six Hoodie Ghosts join MUSASHI and Takeru leaps backwards into all seven and his Self Soul Hoodie and kick the third Kundali blowing it up!

-Takeru and Makoto celebrate the victory with a seemingly familiar exchange of gestures and Onari brings the GOEMON Heroic Eyecon and is utterly relieved when he realizes the fight is over.

-Prince Aran asks Javert why he acted on his own and asks him directly if he knows something about the Eyecons. Javert lies by saying, no. Aran sees through the lie and tells Javert there is a price to pay for wasting the Kundali. Javert asks forgiveness and leaves.

-Aran marvels at the Eyecons’ power.

-Back at Daitenkuu, Makoto thanks Takeru for saving Kanon and they leave with Akari’s coat. Takeru remarks that Makot looks so happy and that it all turned out well. Akari agrees with some reservation as she worries for Takeru.

Ghost 09-10’s Macro Message According to Ammit:

Sometimes we need someone or something external to help us see the world as it truly is, or as it can be. The great looming sorrow is escapable, but you can’t always expect to abate it by yourself and should seek others to help you through the times when you feel you can’t go on and it helps to be vulnerable to others and be willing to put yourself out for them.

Be selfless (you bastards) and help other people even if it hurts you a little, it’s good for the soul.

Ghost 09-10’s Macro Message According to Sono:

We’re now playing with the idea of “What is the truth?”, and that the real truth isn’t always easy to determine or find. Saionji believes absolutely in what he thinks is true about Ryuu, but that doesn’t line up with Igarashi’s truth. Takeru knows one truth, Makoto knows another. Right now, we as the audience don’t know which is the real truth. Of course we want to believe the one our hero knows, but it’s not the first one we were introduced to. There’s a lot that’s still a mystery and right now we can’t decide truth and lies for ourselves. Just as we’re about to learn the details of Igarashi’s truth, he’s taken out (though seem sot still be alive by the end of the episode).

If we learnin the next few episodes, we can start comparing stories and piecing things together, but even then there may still be a lot of details to find — Especially since Sage seems to have his own truth. Obviously Sage knows things and has something of his own agenda, but the way he looked at the monolith at the end of 09 made whatever he’s concerned about seem so dire.

I’m not sure if I can call this the message for the whole episode, but 10 has a heavy theme of the value of life, and who it has value to. The interaction between Akari and Takeru, and then the interactions with them and Makoto brought me back a good 15 years to Magic Knight Rayearth, and I’m going to need you all to indulge me for a minute because this is a moment that stuck close to me as a kid that I’ve never seen repeated.

There’s more value to a human life than just how they feel about themselves. Of course your feelings about yourself are important, but it’s also important to remember how much others care for you and that you have just as much value as everyone else.

Ghost 09-10’s Macro Message According to Aleph:

For my part, 9 and 10 ran together and it was luvverly seeing these big adventures which… yeah, I think absolutely had this big thing about the need to have people to help you check yourself lest your assumptions and flawed understandings about the way things are cause you to wreck yourself.  Makoto’s single-minded pursuit of grimdark vengeance even against the wishes of the person he’s defending, Takeru realizing that there are other people in need of the magic or whatever when you’ve got the 15 eyecons, culminating in everyone not realizing that one of their own had been possessed.  It’s glorious because we, as an audience, can see that the protagonists are all on the same side and don’t need to be fighting, creating one more level of “what is truth”.  Bonus points for Akari being the only one looking for truth even as the whole world gets more and more complex and obscure for everyone else.  But even she’s only scratching the surface, and the rest of the show hints at all these other connections that have just got me so freakin’ hype, y’all don’t even know.

Ghost 09-10’s Macro Message According to Cannibal Sarracenian:

Loyalty is a huge recurring motif in this episode. The obvious is of course the Benkei Eyecon and Javert’s loyalty to whoever the Spirit World royalty are, but also of Prof. Igarashi’s loyalty to his friend and their ideals as well as Takeru’s loyalty to his friendship Makoto and Kanon, and Makoto’s own loyalty to Kanon. And on the flipside, we have Saionji, who is loyal to nobody.

The Ganma himself, very obviously based on Guan Yu, who is famous for loyalty and his sense of honour! Let’s not forget Javert’s namesake’s own fierce loyalty to law and code

Nothing more to add.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 (Maximum) Woments from Ghost 09-10

  • Guys, are the dead coming to conquer and colonize the world of the living?  That is the most amazing idea ever.  Just stop and think about it.  It’s amazing.
  • Also, I really noticed in these episodes how much I really dig on the bit of the transformation where they slump over a little and then spring back to life.
  • And of course, I still love that they’re actually directing with this show.  I adore it so much.

  • The show continues to be SO FREAKING DENSE.  I just keep finding myself reminded that this is episode 10 we’re up to now.  10.  I don’t think I’ve seen a Heisei series that goes this HARD toward whatever it is they’re doing.  I’m not gonna say “better” yet as that density is not inherently good and there’s something like 40 eps for them to ruin everything, but just… dang.
  • The whole Spectre/Kanon scene was amazing.  A Rider attacking more-or-less defenseless people and then his ghost sister manifests to divert him?  So good.  Good enough that the lizard part of my brain was actually worried for Akari and Takeru even though, look, at least Takeru’s GOING to make it through.

  • Kanon telling Makoto she thinks he has changed and doesn’t want to see him continue down this path which makes her uncomfortable
  • Learning that Aran is apparently a prince, an honest to goodness prince!
  • Akari nerding out in the AZUMA lab

  • ONARI’s actor does his best to go from utterly crushed that Takeru is giving up his life to composed and pedagogic when trying to dissuade him and I really dug his performance
  • AKARI telling Takeru NO and pushing him to not just give up his life, for how it showed her feelings for her friend and how the back and forth between them leads them to seek out Makoto and find another way, also it makes it clear that Takeru isn’t giving up on getting his life back, but he’ll just help Kanon first.
  • Possessed-Shibuya in general, but for sure stealing the Heroic Eyecons

  • Those Christmas cards are adorable and I want 800 of both of them. Slight bone to pick is how the heck do Onari and the kids know what Yurusen looks like? Also secret identities are a laughable concept in Kamen Rider wow. But I mean this is probably something kids can get in magazines or at a department store or something? That’s kind of what it seems like, but it didn’t feel intrusive and it was SUPER CUTE.
  • Onari helping Akari calm down and breathe as she talks to the physicist about Igarashi. I can’t get over the chemistry these two have together.
  • The belts-eye-view as Spectre charged his finisher. Holy crap that’s such a FRESH shot and it absolutely floored me. A+ use of motif and camerawork.

  • Shibuya and Narita getting to matter! They played a big role in this episode! They were used to bring that whole eyecon possession thing back into the game! Nice! We got some real character put into these two.
  • Akari bringing around that idea of your life meaning something to the people who care about you. I’m still hung up on that because man it’s important to me. She wasn’t hesitant about it either. She didn’t try to softly persuade Takeru. She laid it out and made her position very clear. She doesn’t want to lose her best friend.
  • And on that note, Akari calling Takeru OUT on it when he says the same thing to her. I mean it was awesome enough when she stepped into the fight, but when Takeru yells at her for it she shuts him down IMMEDIATELY. No feeling bad about it. No hesitating. Akari knows how little time Takeru has and she’s SCARED and she’s not having any of his nonsense today.

  • I like Javert. He’s just badass. A no-nonsense, uniformed bad guy that we haven’t really seen in a long while. He’s monster form is really nice too with the Rider’s mouthplate/crusher instead of the bug-eyes. I also get giddy by the notion of Rider’s enemy being the most classical jackbooted thug.
  • Guan Yu Ganma makes me happy. My Chineseness approves.
  • More answers that also serves as questions and questions that serves as answers. Oooh so much to know yet still keeping my attention.

  • Yo yo Akari getting involved in the Makoto&Takeru conflict while Kanon does as well. Its nice, I hope we see more of this.
  • ‘eyyy holy damn that ending in episode 10 oh man. When was the last time something this big happened this early in the show?

Miscellaneous: Shibuya gets possessed, but he gets better. Onari more or less completely fill Shibuya and Narita in on the fact that Takeru is dead and they are trying to help him gather Eyecons so he can get his life back. Aran is a prince and his brother and or father sends him Javel/Javert to assist Aran as well as spy on him at the order of Aran’s Imperial brother. Akari gets knocked out in the lab before Saionji seals it off and makes his way to the Monolith with 2, not 1, but 2 briefcases.

Bellow is a fairly thorough rundown of the episode

Episode 09

-26 Days Left!

– Kanon tells Makoto she thinks he has changed and doesn’t want to see him continue down this path which makes her uncomfortable. He assures her that he hasn’t changed and she hesitantly accepts it.

-Takeru sees his father Ryu Tenkuuji standing mute in front of the Monolith and questions him about the sorrow that befell Makoto and Kanon. Ryu disappears and Takeru awakens from another dream about his father where he can’t quite reach him.

-A man with a very Earl-Meiji Restoration look about him appears from an Eyecon that passed through an Eye Portal. This GanMan, exposits that he is finally able to reach the place they have been seeking. Aran is there on the roof with him and asks JAVEL what he is doing there.

-JAVEL tells Aran that HIS GRAND MPERIAL MAJESTY is dissatisfied with the pace of the operation and that JAVEL is there to expedite things. Aran is shocked that HIS FATHER would say that. Aran tells JAVEL to tell FATHER that he has things handled, but JAVEL says he has been assigned to assist Aran, who scoffs at having a babysitter.

-Aran turns to leave and shakes off JAVEL by explaining that he needs to convince someone to take things more seriously.

-Takeru finds Sage in the lab and asks if Sage knew about Makoto being Spectre and if it has to do with his father’s work. Sage gives him a hint about the next Eyecon being MUSASHIBO BENKEI. Takeru calls out Sage for changing the subject, which the Wise One denies. Sage then pints at something and when Takeru looks away he vanishes.

-Takeru gets yelled out by the supposed souvenir Sage gave him as he is headed upstairs but can’t find out more about it as Shibuya and Narita excitedly share the promotional Christmas Cards they had made of Kamen Rider Ghost and Akari.

-Everyone chatters over the cards and the deliveryman startles Onari after letting himself in and following the noise. He has an envelope with no return address sent to him. In the lab Onari, Takeru and Akari investigate its contents. Akari recognizes a photograph of physics expert DR. IGARASHI who disappeared TEN YEARS AGO. Onari says that the lab where DR. IGARASHI formerly worked has been experiencing paranormal activity.

-Takeru recognizes DR. IGARASHI and looks through his dad’s desk and finds a picture of the missing physicist with Ryu Tenkuuji and Saionji.

-Akari and Onari get a look at the picture and identify the third man in the picture, Saionji, as the man who one who created the Billy the Kid Eyecon and said he’d take Takeru’s Eyecons. Takeru turns over the picture and reads Saionji’s name from the back of it.

-The Picture was taken September 2, 2005 and has the three men’s names written on it

-Akari wonders if the unmarked envelope leading them to these discoveries might be part of a trap, but Takeru says he will proceed anyway to figure out what happened.

-Saionji stands on a roof top expositing that though Ryu Tenkuuji was a great leader, he still hated him and recalls Ryu asking him and DR. IGARASHI to help him with his research so they could leave a brighter future to kids like Makoto and Takeru, embodiments of Humanity’s potential.

-Saionji directs the NAGINATA? Ganma to ensure that Takeu follows a certain trail…

-Onari, Akari and Takeru visit the AZUMA Physics Laboratory and are show to DR. IGARASHI former lab space where a young researcher has reported objects floating.

-Their guide tells them that DR. IGARASHI was a bit antisocial and eccentric and that shortly before his disappearance, he was obsessed with some research. Additionally, though he didn’t socialize much he would take personal calls from Ryu Tenkuuji.

-Takeru pauses as they are leaving the AZUMA lab, unsure about what truths he may discover. Akari assures him that once the find DR. IGARASHI they can ask about his and Makoto’s disappearance TEN YEARS AGO. They go to another research site DR. IGARASHI used and discover a notebook full of formulas which Takeru asks Akari to look through.

-Takeru notices a fan which was given to Benkei from his master with a poem written by Yoshitsune. Takeru tells Onari and Akari a bit about the relationship between the two and she remarks that they must be close to getting the Benkei Eyecon given the fan he once owned is in their possession.

-Takeru notices that they were being watched by DR. IGARASHI who flees when he is seen. Takeru uses his name to stop DR. IGARASHI in the woods and ask him some about the accident with Makoto and Kanon. DR. IGARASHI mutters that the future is lost and that he will never trust anyone again and that “nothing can stop it.”

-The Ganma attacks and DR. IGARASHI flees. The fight is a draw after Yurusen tells Takeru to THINK and the Ganma uses an unexpected technique to escape.

-Aran goes to Makoto and asks him to help him out by speeding things along. Makoto isn’t interested and Javel attacks him for showing such disrespect to Prince Aran! Aran says that Makoto has changed and leaves, irritated.

-Back at Daitenkuu, Akari shows Onari and Takeru the final message in DR. IGARASHI’s notebook.

“Forgive me. I was unable to die in your place, and I was unable to bring the traitor to justice. nor was I capable of following in your footsteps. With your death, it is all over.”

Takeru is desperate to speak with him after reading the final message and heads off despite Onari and Akari’s concern that DR. IGARASHI isn’t in the proper state to share

-Back at DR. IGARASHI’s abandoned factory laboratory Takeru sets down Benkei’s fan and calmly asks DR. IGARASHI who is crouched in fearful resignation to explain what happened so that he can help his friend Makoto.

-Takeru assures DR. IGARASHI that he will not give up and his life will burn brightly to the very end, which reminds IGARASHI of a moment between him and Ryu, his trusted friend who died. IGARASHI was downcast because he feared that some inevitable overwhelming force was coming, but Ryu Tenkuuji encouraged him to believe in Mankind’s potential.

-Moved by the echo of the past, IGARASHI tells Takeru he will believe in him and tell him everything he knows. Takeru asks about the experiment but is interrupted by the Ganma’s attack. Takeru pulls out his SELF SOUL Eyecon to henshin, but the Ganma knocks it from his hand.

-The Ganma strikes at Takeru again, but IGARASHI takes the blow and tells Takeru to follow Ryu’s footsteps by following the path he believes in. IGARASHI glows with a golden light as he lays on the ground. Benkei’s fan glows too and the Ganma rejoices.

-Angered by the Ganma’s disregard for human life, Takeru henshins and uses the BENKEI Eyecon to fight the Ganma at Yurusen’s insistence. The fight leads them onto the Gojo Bridge and the Ganma backs off to let Spectre fight its battle as Makoto interjected himself saying he would have all of Takeru’s eyecons.

-Takeru confronts Makoto and tells him that he doesn’t know what happened to him, but that he is resolved to help Makoto who was once so kind. Makoto tells Takeru that he can’t stand to hear him say things Kanon has said and he uses TUTANKHAMEN’s OMEGA FANG which is defeated by BENKEI’s OMEGA BOMBER!

-Spectre’s transformation is broken and Kanon calls out to him. Akari asks where the voice came from and Yurusen creeps on the possibility of Kanon being a cute girl, ya know when she is corporeal or at least semi-corporeal. Takeru staggers towards Kanon’s Eyecon, but Makoto dives for it and says not to touch it.

-Makoto holds Kanon’s Eyecon and tells Takeru he is gathering the 15 Eyecons so he can bring Kanon back to life. Makoto leaves them on the bridge.

-Aran and Javel are on a rooftop where Javel admires a giant Eye Symbol hovering over a place, like the Eye Symbol that was created over the school from a while back. Prince Aran turn and briskly walks saying they must go to the next site and that the door to the other side will soon be open.

-Sainoji hang out at the top of a flight of stair and tells the Ganma that the Final Eyecon has been created and all is going according to his plan.

-Sage stands before the Monolith in the lab and stares at the eye etched into it.

-End of 09

Episode 10

-26 Days Left! MAYBE 25 by now

-Akari and Onari take the news that Takeru has made up his mind to give his Eyecons to Makoto so he can bring back Kanon less easily than he may have liked

-Akari and Onari try to talk him out of it. It doesn’t work so Akari drags Takeru away to go find Makoto and Onari calls Shibuya and Narita into a meditation session which ends with them resolving to help Takeru find 15 Eyecons so he can come back to life.

-Saionji exposits that now that the 15 Eyecons have emerged all he has to do is gather them. Saionji orders the Seiryuto Ganma to go deal with Fukami Makoto by exploiting his weakness and he decides to deal with Takeru himself.

-Takeru tries to slowdown Akari and is shocked when he realizes she doesn’t have a plan. Yurusen points out to Takeru that Makoto is walking towards him in a huff so he and Akari should cease bickering.

-Takeru is flummoxed by Makoto’s intent to fight him but Akari steps in front of the single-minded Makoto and defuses the situation. Akari asks Makoto if he recognizes her and explains that Takeru doesn’t have much time left. Makoto asks what about Kanon then and questions if Akari cares about her. Akari struggles to answer and Kanon even interjects herself, but Makoto says, enough talk and henshins.

-Makoto declares that he fights for Kanon’s sake and asks Takeru what he fights for. Takeru stammers for one second and Spectre attacks. Takeru transforms and we see: TUTANKHAMEN v MUSASHI and NOBUNAGA v BILLY THE KID which ends in a draw and puts the two just outside of arm’s length of each other.

-Takeru lowers his weapon, dehenshins and tells Makoto that he wants to help him find the other Eyecons so that they can bring Kanon back to life. Makoto questions Takeru’s commitment to his cause and tries to shoot him in the untransformed face.

-Takeru says he cannot make the decision as to whose life is more valuable: his or Kanon’s and that is why he refuses to fight Makoto for all the Eyecons to save only himself. Takeru tells Makoto that when he sees someone’s life being torn away from them that he just can’t ignore it and that he wants to bring back Kanon’s life.

-Makoto remembers Ryu Tenkuuji telling him as a child that he must open his mind’s eye and become a hero. Makoto asks him if he wants to be a hero and Ryu says that he wants to ensure the future will be safe for others.

-Takeru breaks Makoto from his reverie by taking a step towards him, but Makoto doesn’t allow it, he goes for an Omega Drive on untransformed Takeru, but Akari steps in front of Takeru and then Takeru steps in front of Akari, but Spectre keeps going, until Kanon appears in a spectral form and yells at him to stop being an ass.

-Javel has been watching and he observes the aftermath. Spectre is gone and Takeru and Akari share their concern for each other. She tells him she cares about saving him like he cares about saving Kanon.

-Makoto sternly asks Kanon why she got in his way and she answers that she doesn’t want to be brought back to life. She wants Makoto to be happy and doesn’t want them to fight. She tells Makoto he has changed, but before they can continue their conversation, the Seiryuto Ganma snatches Kanon and threatens to destroy her Eyecon unless Makoto hands over the other Eyecons.

-They make the exchange and Kanon is safe but the Ganma got away. Makoto says that it must have been Aran who sent the Ganma and declares that he will never trust anyone again. Kanon seems flustered.

-Javel reports to Prince Aran that Makoto is gathering the Eyecons for an “intensely personal reason” which is blatant treason for which he must be reported immediately. Aran tells Javel that he will deal with the issue and that Makoto is only acting this way because of Takeru. Javel says he will eliminate Takeru Tenkuuji and bows.

-Prince Aran leaves and Javel quietly asks forgiveness of Aran for not sharing the Eyecon’s secret with him, but says that he is following Aran’s brother’s orders.

-Onari Shibuya and Narita meet up and head off towards someone who has a lead on Saionji. Before Shibuya joins his companions Saionji possesses him with a black Eyecon and wishes the GanMook good luck as it goes off to capture Takeru’s Eyecons.

-Back at Daitenkuu Temple, the group shares that not much was gained in the day’s efforts, but Akari says she is going to work on the Monolith with the aid of Igarashi’s notes. Onari remarks on Akari’s slightly off behavior, but possessed-Shibuya changes the subject and gets Takeru to show them the Eyecons he has.

-Possessed-Shibuya zaps Narita and Onari unconscious and instructs Takeru to call an ambulance. Takeru goes to call and finds Shibuya and the Heroic Eyecons missing. Spider-Lantern jumps onto his shoulder and shows him the way to Shibuya.

-Onari and Narita go along with Takeru and Spider-Lantern shows them the Ganma as well as joining in with Bat-Clock and Condor-Phone to attack the Ganma so the group can close the distance. Narita and Onari restrain Shibuya while Takeru transforms and fights the Ganma.

-Onari leaves a struggling Narita for a hot second so he can toss the struggling Takeru the closest Heroic Eyecon. Takeru barely catches the off balance toss and uses BENKEI to and completely thrashes the Ganma who doubts how much the monk-ly powers will help him out.

-The Ganma’s Eyecon shatters and drops all the other Eyecons. The uncanny Yurusen reminds Takeru to go save his friend so Takeru leaves all the Eyecons behind and exorcises the black Eyecon from Shibuya.

-Onari returns Takeru’s Eyecons to him and Yurusen uncannily carries some in their cape. Takeru notices that they are Makoto’s as Makoto comes along and transforms to fight him. Javel interrupts by blasting at them and transforms himself with a Special Eyecon that looks neither quite like the black Eyecons or the Heroic Eyecons. The uncanny Yurusen warns Takeru that this guy is no ordinary Ganma.

-Makoto seems to know Javel and takes the first attack from him. They ask his name and why he wants the Eyecons, but Javel doesn’t wish to share because he plans on killing them shortly. He knocks them down with a critical hit that drops their Eyecons.

-Saionji comes along saying that while this isn’t what he had planned it will still work. He opens his case and the Eyecons fly into it completing the set of 15. Saionji pulls out some weird tech and hits a switch on it creating a giant reddish-globe around a mountain and possibly Daitenkuu.

-Javel, Makoto and Takeru are all untransformed and the Eye on the Monolith glows red for a moment. Akari notices something is wrong and calls out to Sage who isn’t there. Something comes from the Monolith and she hits knocked against the wall and falls unconscious.

-Saionji walks into the lab and stands in front of the Monolith and sets down two briefcases saying the time has finally come to begin the ritual.

RX125 Preshow: Kamen Rider Ghost 09-10 Reactions and Questions

The deadline for submitting feedback for Ghost 09and 10 for -RX! 125 is Thursday December 17, 2015 2:00pm PST, but we welcome feedback anytime after that as well in our comments section, in or inbox or through Twitter or on Tumblr.

Hello everyone, this is Ammit here. I have some thoughts and feelings about Ghost this week. This show is so great and Imma bout to tell you why.

Goodness gracious me, this show is well made so far. There were some rough patches in the beginning, but for the last month Ghost has been on fire! Onari and Akari are both nestled comfortably in their grooves, no longer at risk of slipping out of them and spinning dangerously out of control until they come to a sudden stop imbedded in the viewer’s eyes, shins or guts. We know who all the players are and the roles they play, but now there are more threads running to far off places. These new threads sizzle and burn like fuses set to blow at any time or anywhere and we know this because we have only just noticed their presence. How long ago were these fuses lit? How much longer can they burn? Where will the cast be when they go off? What tectonic shifts will occur and how will they change the show?

I can’t wait to find out the answers to the above questions, but I would like to focus my thoughts on something that just hit me this week. We have already witnessed a big shift in who the main trio are in this show. Takeru, Akari and Onari started off as three people dealing with the Ganma’s existence and paranormal phenomena as the undecided, the skeptic and the believer. Akari and Onari each pulled at Takeru to join them on their side of the divide. Takeru decided to believe in what he experienced himself and remained open to all the outlandish possibilities. Onari and Akari have been affected by Takeru’s stance as well as the things they have observed and been involved with and the gap between them has closed somewhat. Onari trusts in Akari’s ability to discern through science, hidden realities of the Ganma and Akari is open to accepting that this madness is happening and doing everything she can to apply the scientific method to and design a means for her to interact with the Ganma through definite, repeatable methods. All of this happened by about episode 6 and so the apparent trajectory of Ghost taking on the issue of Faith V Science seems to have fallen away. Since then we’ve seen two other three-way relationships take focus to shape the narrative.

The two trios upon which the narrative seems to be hung in this portion of the show are that of the Ghost Hunter, the Scientist and the Traitor. There are two sets of characters who fill these roles, separated by the 10 year gap when they are actively serving in their roles. 10 years ago Ryu Tenkuuji with the assistance of Dr. Igarashi, his scientist friend and Saionji, who also seems to be a scientist, betrayed Ryu and Igarashi. They were researching the Monolith and through it trying to stop something inevitable and terrifying. Igarashi had the know-how to attack the issue, Ryu had the faith and put forth a great effort to see that it was stopped so that others would have a future and Saionji who had the power to help them, sought to meet his own ends and selfishly betrayed them.

10 years later another terrible inevitability is being faced, Takeru has 99 days to gather the 15 Eyecons to restore his life, Makoto likely has 99 days to save Kanon and a larger threat looms just off in the distance. Akari sees the days ticking away and is so concerned with her friend’s impending doom that she can’t see a way for Takeru to help save Kanon without giving up his own life. Akari is just on the cusp of discerning the monolith’s purpose working off of Igarashi’s work and can only do so much to save Takeru from Makoto’s malicious intent. Akari warns him, but without the power of a Rider or really strong Ganma or something else, she is as of yet unable to do anything but try to reason with him. Makoto is resolved to no longer trust anyone. Takeru offers to help Makoto, but he refuses, choosing to see himself at odds with his former friend. All along Makoto has advocated ignoring the pain of others and refusing to help them so that he could maintain his focus on saving his sister. Sometime before Makoto and Kanon went into the Ganma’s world, Ryu Tenkuuji told little Makoto that he should have the heart of a hero and open his mind’s eye to do whatever he can to ensure that the future thrives and that he can help others. We see that Makoto has forgotten that, like he forgot the closeness he shared with Takeru and Akari and how he forgets to take Kanon into consideration while working to save her.

The Tenkuujis seem to be these bearers of hope and light to those around them and selflessly give of themselves to support those they can and see that others will continue to be secure even when they aren’t. Ryu asked Igarashi to have faith in the next generation and Takeru was willing to give up the Robin Hood Eyecon that Mari would live. It feels like the show is over the hurdle of faith versus science, because we are here regardless of what started things and has moved on to looking at how we deal with the world we are in. Do we embrace those around us and seek to work together for a common goal or do we turn from others and seek to meet only our own ends at the expense of others? Takeru may be striving to collect the 15 Eyecons to resurrect himself, but along the way he refused to put himself ahead of others, saved their lives and is willing to make sure Kanon is revived before himself. Makoto is cold and hard and the very sister he is trying to save is protesting that she no longer knows him. He is wholly devoted to the single goal of saving Kanon and is losing himself and her in the process. Takeru is on the precipice of giving up his life for Kanon’s but in that is approaching his goal of letting his life burn brightly and is lauded by his friends for his intention. It seems that until Makoto opens his mind’s eye he cannot become a hero as Ryu asked of him, while Takeru and Akari are walking that path already. He really is the Traitor in this scenario. Let’s see if his connection to Kanon can bring him back from the edge of if he will be a lonely figure of spite like Saionji.

Anyway, enough of my thoughts. What do you think?

Are there other character trios in the show? What do they say? Am I right on the current thesis of the show?

On Eyecons

How much do you like the Benkei Eyecon?

Is Benkei the first Eyecon to have two different versions of the finisher?

Makoto's Other OE-3-Heroic Eyecons

Where do you think Makoto got those other Eyecons? Did he have to let people die to get them, like Takeru could have with Mari and the Robin Hood Eyecon?

Spectre's Treason-2

Javert says that Makoto acting for a personal reason is “treason”. What ties do you think Makoto has to Alan’s “family”, and to what degree do you think Alan is acting regarding Makoto? Is Alan covering for Makoto or does he really have his own agenda?

Forcing Perspective

FP-1-On Life Agency

Is Ghost sending mixed messages about the agency one has over their own life?

FP-2-No to Suicide

Is Ghost saying “no” to suicide with Takeru realizing that he is not the only one with the right to value his life?

FP-3-No to Life

What do you think about Kanon saying she doesn’t want to come back to life if Makoto will become a terrible person to make it happen?

The flashback to Ryu and Igarashi’s conversation in Ghost 09 made it look like they saw impending doom and Ryu had to assure Igarashi they could somehow stop it. Takeru has just over 3 weeks left until he becomes completely dead and unable to act in the world. Especially with his decision to save Kanon first, Takeru has to assure Akari that he will be able to save himself to. Do the Tenkuujis have blind faith or confidence and firm belief and with whom does it play better?

What, if anything, is being said about the world and our place in it in this episode? Ghost deals with the idea of Icons and Great Men, in a way that makes focusing narrowly on obtaining tangible objects relating to them important, but what makes a person great? What does that mean?

Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!

Ghost 07-08’s Macro Message According to Ammit:

I think these episodes were about the dealing with loss and finding the resolve to keep going afterwards, but in a different way than Takeru had to grapple with in the first episode. I guess we’re getting to the texturing part of the show, where the themes will be reiterated and re-examined from different angles to draw different thoughts from it. If I am correct about this, then this is a good starting point to make Takeru’s struggle more relatable to the viewers, the kids and us.

Ghost 07-08’s Macro Message According to Sono:

I only noticed this as I was writing my notes, but there’s also an interesting loop… 07 begins with Saionji telling Takeru’s dad to enjoy watching all of this as he rots in hell, and 08 ends with Tsuneo and Tomonori saying that their friendship is so strong that even if they die they’ll hang out in hell together, and I think that’s a REALLY interesting parallel.

We have three paralleling relationships (possibly four, if you count Akari and Kanon, but that hasn’t been explored at all, so I’m sticking to three) over this arc; Tsuneo and Tomonori (the friendship that can be fixed), Takeru and Makoto (the friendship that may become fixed), and Ryu and Saionji (the friendship that cannot be fixed). /i feel like we’re setting up for a lesson in friendship and I’m really hoping this is a thing that they keep exploring, since having this as a key element and exploring it from this early on could lead to some really richly developed characters and I am ALL IN for that business.

Ghost 07-08’s Macro Message According to Aleph:

Look, I was just being a structure nerd again because the setup/payoff for this stuff was excellent.  All the friendship stuff being seeded throughout, building around not only the effects of Saionji and Ryu’s research–where I’m guessing Saionji’s dropping some half-truths and I love him for it–but on all these strong relationships that are twisted or injured as a result?  Beautiful.  Just gorgeous and subtle and, guys?  It’s only EPISODE EIGHT.  EXCITE.

But to the question at hand, I’m very much in the camp where this is a bit about just plain coping and finding a way to push forward when things are, y’know, freaking awful and hopeless and terrible.  I really like this whole thing where–like you were saying, Sono–we’ve established and explored all these friendships but now the question becomes what people will do when they go south (or seem to) and these are such great reveals and setups and I love it so much.

Ghost 07-08’s Macro Message According to Cannibal Sarracenian:

One particular motif of note in these episode is memories and the menace of “forgetting”. Tomonori “forgets” Tsuneo straining their bond, while Spectre feels Takeru has “forgotten” him and his sister, pitting them against each other because of it, while Saionji challenges and modifies Makoto’s own memories of what happened at the monolith, absolving Saionji’s own potential involvement with the incident. Might be looking too deep, but it is interesting since the series thus far has been built very much about the power of remembering, valuing and re-evaluating the past to build the now. Seems natural that forgetting the past would be the malicious omnipresent force within the narrative.

The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 Woments from Ghost 07-08

  • Aran working on some weird counter-monolith and being at some kind of possible cross-purposes with Saionji is great.
  • I don’t know if they’re toning Onari down or the rest of the show is just covering for him, but I liked him a lot more here.
  • I like all the repetition with “99 days” being a thing.

  •  Tenkuuji Ryu coming back in that dream sequence
  • Those kids acting JUST LIKE Makoto and Takeru
  • Seeing Takeru training

  • OH MAN Saionji’s 100% casual “HAVE FUN ROTTING IN HELL” at Takeru’s dad’s grave. Like Jesus CHRIST dude. Saionji reminds me a lot of Matsu from Movie War Core, just in kind of the ties to Takeru’s dad, and how BRUTAL this guy is.
  • Akari and Onari working together! They’re actually a pretty good team, even if they like to bicker at each other, which I find really charming honestly. They have a really good chemistry together and I really love how lively their interactions are without having that unnecessary over-the-top gag thing that Drive did with all of SCU.

  • Also Takeru explains shit to the other characters and doesn’t hide info from Akari or anyone. Good. No matter what this show is gonna end up later on, based on this alone it already is better than the last two Rider shows by far.
  • Hey ho its the Bee Woman episode from 1971! Got the hypnotic jewelry and everything!

In keeping with Ms. Akari’s love of the empirical, the following contains observable information from the events of the day Akari received a set of injuries and Takeru and Onari set up the Daitenkuu temple as a headquarters for staging paranormal investigations.

Spook Report Ghost 07 Bullseye! The Legendary Gunman!

Spook Report Ghost 08 Activating the Other Monolith!

Writer: Fukuda Takurou

Diector: Shibasaki Takayuki

Ganma: A Queen Bee somehow made from a Black Eyecon and a magnifying glass

New Heroic Eyecon Summoned: Billy the Kid

Miscellaneous: The man in the Black Hat is Saionji and he has a faceless Ghost Driver in the bottom of a bag that enable him to get Heroic Eyecons from people without killing them. Sweater the Kid is actually called Aran. Spider-Lantern can reveal Ganma to anyone AND shoot webs somehow. Bat-Clock apparently works as a gun and a surveillance drone, which records a lot of video and plays it back after being wound back.

Bellow is a fairly thorough rundown of the episode

Episode 07

-30 Days Left! A 15 day jump?!?!?!?!?

-Apparently Hat new Ryu Tenkuuji as the episode opens on him mocking the man at his grave as he promises to do what he set out to do

-Hat passes Makoto who is also at Daitenkuu to visit the former Master’s grave. Hat doubletakes Makoto and wonders who he is

-Takeru awakens wistfully from a dream about seeing his dad and telling him about how he is going to do great

-Akari comes to Takeru while he is had at work training and reminisces about how it reminds her of the old days when he would spar with Makoto. She wonders what he is up to since they haven’t seen him since he disappeared ten years ago.

-Takeru goes down to the lab in search of Sage, but instead finds two more animal widgets of unknown function and dubious form as well as a note from Sage tipping him off to the fact that Billy the Kid will be the next Eyecon he’ll be shooting for

-Akai takes the note from Takeu and puts it up on a magnetic board with the adorable Kamen Rider Ghost character magnet (Bandai) she made

-Onari comes into the lab and informs Takeru that TANAKA TSUNEO a new client is waiting to see him upstairs

TANAKA TSUNEO is concerned about his friend MIKURA TOMONORI who he hadn’t seen for a year and is now acting rather strangely.  TANAKA TSUNEO was tipped off that something was wrong when MIKURA TOMONORI forgot their secret greeting. Additionally the people in  MIKURA TOMONORI’s neighborhood are all acting strangely, gathering together at night and going to a place where he can’t follow because some strange incident always stops him every time he tries to follow them.

-Onari excitedly and absentmindedly mentions Ganma in front of TANAKA TSUNEO who seems curious about it, but fortunately Shibuya and Narita rush in with news that Hat was spotted at a Western store recently. Akari asks them if they are talking about the man who tricked Sonoda (the Scientist from the Edison episode) and Mari (the Reporter from the Robin Hood episode) and gets an affirmative answer.

-The group is perplexed at what to do as they must investigate both matters, so Takeru says he will go with TSUNEO while Onari and Akari take the Lamp Widget and Clock Widget with them when they go investigate Hat’s activities at the store.

-Akari and Onari seem less than thrilled to be paired off

-Takeru and TSUNEO go to the neighborhood and Takeru shares that he had a friend like TOMONORI who suddenly vanished one day. We see a flashback of kid Makoto and Takeru tells TSUNEO he is sure his friend is doing fine wherever he is. TSUNEO is shocked and seems a bit uncomfortable about the situation, but Takeru urges him on to continue their observation of the neighborhood.

-People are silently watching the two as the walk through the neighborhood. TSUNEO spots TOMONORI and approaches him, but TOMONORI acts as if he doesn’t know him and calmly excuses himself and walks away.

-The Ganma knocks out TSUNEO and knocks back Takeru. The pink cowboy hat and boot wearing bee or wasp themed Ganma tells Takeru that she is guarding her little community and people need her permission to enter it. They start to tussle but Spectre comes in and challenges Takeru for getting distracted and asks him what he is going to do. Takeru answers that he will help people and get his life back, enough said!

-Ghost equips Musashi, Spectre uses Nobunaga. They fight and Takeru proves himself to be stronger, he tells Spectre that he has thrown away his doubt and won’t back down. They have a Rider Kick duel and Spectre tells him it isn’t half bad, but that he won’t let Takeru get in his way.

TSUNEO calls Takeru. He returns to his client and learns that TOMONORI and everyone in the neighborhood is gone. Takeru tells him to stay put and runs off to find them.

-Makoto is hanging out by the river wondering what it all means. Hat walks up on him and introduces himself as Saionji and says that he has been helping Mr. Aran (Sweater the kid). SAIONJI asks Makoto if he and ARAN were sent to the Game’s world ten years ago.

-Makoto looks surprised and listens to SAIONJI tell of how he and Ryu Tenkuuji had been studying the Ganma together ten years ago. SAIONJI says he thinks the two of them were victims of that experiment. Makoto says it was an “accident” not an “experiment” and his sister starts to say something.

SAIONJI asks if Makoto’s sister is in the Eyecon and expresses pity but Makoto gets defensive so SAIONJI leaves with a touch to his hat.

-Makoto has a flashback to him and Kanon being in the Daitenkuu lab and getting sucked into the Game world though a portal manifested in front of the monolith and being surrounded by dust or ash and Eyecons in the Ganma world.

-Akari and Onari see SAIONJI at the Western themed store speaking with someone inside dressed as a cowboy. The man is elated to see the hat that allegedly belonged to Billy the Kid and it glows with a golden light. SAIONJI draws the Eye Seal over it and the Billy the Kid Hoodie Ghost pops out. He opens his black bag and it is drawn in. SAIONJI reaches in and retrieves the Eyecon from the modified, metal faced (uncovered) Ghost Driver which is set in the bottom of the bag with a tangle of wires.

-Makoto visits Aran and asks him about SAIONJI and if Aran know about what happened ten years ago. Aran says that Saionji helps him, that he doesn’t know what happened and then he thanks Makoto for loaning him Edison, saying it helped him do some good research. We see a flash of a Ganma Hole type Eye Seal floating above the figure of a person, possibly Edison in a room.

-Akari and Onari follow SAIONJI to an abandoned building where he has an office of sorts set up. Onari sees the Eyecon and Jar Jars his way to getting it from SAIONJI who activates two blank Eyecons to get it back. Akari uses the Lantern to make the two visible and when they have Akari and Onari cornered, the Clock chimes and she brings it out. The clock unfolds into a bat like robot that attacks the GanMooks and SAIONJI with sound waves. They ask it to take them to Takeru and follow it out.

-Takeru finds the group from the neighborhood and sees that they have Lil’ Baby Ganma Bees on them. He summons his Belt and from it the GanGan Sabre destroying the Lil’  Baby Ganma Bees as they attack him. TOMONORI flees and Takeu fights the Ganma demanding to know its intentions.

-The Ganma avoids a finisher by splitting into a swarm of bees and when they find him Akari uses the Spider-Lantern to show her and Onari the Ganma and Takeru. She throws him the new Eyecon and the Bat-Clock turns itself into its gun mode and flies into Takeru’s hand so that he can dual wield and shoot the swarm until the Ganma pulls itself together.

-Takeru is about to finish the Ganma when Yurusen pops up and tells him to combine the GanGan Sabre’s gun configuration with the Bat-Clock gun mode to make a “rifle” that looks more like a double-barreled shotgun to me.

-Takeru hits the Ganma with an Omega impact which almost destroys it, but it just caused the Ganma to turn into a Queen-Beedozer which he has to take care of while Onari and Akari are carried off by GanMooks!

End of 07

Episode 08

-Apparently the events of episode 07 took place over a few days, so Takeru now has 27 days left!

-I didn’t initially catch that the Bee Ganma swarmed into and merged with a bulldozer supposedly under a tarp in a little construction zone. I just thought it was random, but it is becoming more clear that the Ganma can only turn into a CGI beast by possessing some big machine or object.

-The GIANT BEE leaves the bulldozer behind after that pesky kid and his Hoodie Iguana wont let up, but Captain Ghost refuses to let it go and uses its long prehensile tongue to grab the Queen BeeGanma which gives Takeru the chance to destroy it with an Omega Drive Rider KICK!!!

-Takeru dehenshins and looks for Akari and Onari, but only sees the former Drones wandering around after being freed from the BeeGanma’s control.

-Bat-Clock chimes. Takeru turns towards it and the Uncanny Yurusen pops into frame and suggests Takeru turn back time on the Bat-Clock which causes the helper robot to show a projected recording of the monk and physicist fleeing the abandoned building. Takeru asks Bat-Clock to take him there.

SAIONJI ties up Onari and Akari and instructs GanMooks to possess them, but Takeru saves them just before they can be possessed. They have a little banter trying to prove they aren’t possessed after which they leave satisfied that neither of them is. SAIONJI had wanted to possess them to pilfer Takeru’s Eyecons.

-Back at Daitenkuu, SAIONJI sees Makoto speaking to Kanon who asks him not to do anything dangerous. Makoto says he won’t and reaffirms his promise to bring her back. As he is leaving he sees SAIONJI. Kanon tells Makoto not to trust him and SAIONJI asks to be heard.

SAIONJI tells Makoto that he and RYU Tenkuuji were studying the Monolith and its connection to the Ganma world. As lead on the work, Ryu decided to see if a human could enter the Ganma world. SAIONJI states that he and others objected because scientific practice generally frowns upon experimenting on humans and he thought that Ryu had been convinced that it was not right to do, but that the only way Makoto and Kanon could have passed through the portal is if someone had purposely activated the Monolith.

-Makoto is shocked to hear that Ryu Tenkuuji would have made that choice. SAIONJI asks incredulously if Makoto had respected Ryu and laments Kanon’s current state as a vexed Makoto walks away.

-Makoto keeps warning SAIONJI to not talk about Kanon, but he just keeps laying into him and warns Makoto that Takeru has already gathered 5 Eyecons. SAIONJI questions whether Makoto is going easy on Takeru because he is a Tenkuuji and calls him naive suggesting that only one of them can gain the 15 Eyecons and make a miracle happen. Makoto assure SAIONJI that he will do whatever needs to be done and storms off.

SAIONJI opens his briefcase and gazes upon the 5 eyecons he has and recounts that with his 5, Ghost’s 5 and Spectre’s 4, they only need to discover 1 more Eyecon to have the 15 required.

-Akari, Onari and Takeru are having a good time going over the day’s events. They tell Takeru that Hat obtained the Billy the kid Eyecon and intends to steal the others from Takeru and he talks about how happy he is that the neighborhood was saved and how TSUNEO and TOMONORI must be having a great time together when Narita and Shibuya bring in a distressed TSUNEO.

TSUNEO tells Takeru that everything is fine in the neighborhood but TOMONORI is missing! They asks TSUNEO for a photo of TOMONORI and the he joins 5 of them in going around asking people if they have seen TOMONORI.

TSUNEO tells Takeru of a nearby and now abandoned factory he and TOMONORI played at as children. Takeru lets Akari and onari know about it before he and TSUNEO go there, but Makoto comes along to interrupt them. Takeru tells TSUNEO to stay back and tells Spectre he doesn’t have time to fight him just now. TSUNEO runs off to find his friend while they bicker.

-Makoto scoffs at Takeru continuing to help others and asks if he knows what Ryu Tenkuuji had been working on 10 years ago. Takeru puts things together and asks Spectre if he is Makoto. He refuses to answer and drops NOBUNAGA into his belt.

-Takeru dodges a few attacks and then henshins. Takeru asks where Makoto has been for 10 years and switches to MUSASHI. He tells Makoto they were all worried about him and asks about Kanon. Makoto responds that they had all forgotten him and trounces him for talking about Kanon, saying that Takeru has no right to talk about her.

-Makoto tells Takeru that he and Kanon were living in hell while everyone else lived their lives. Takeru demands to no more because he won’t fight a friend without knowing why. Makoto declares he has no friends and uses TUTANKHAMUN to and the COBRA-CELL with the GanGanGunt to form a SCYTHE.

-Spectre hacks away at Ghost as Takeru continues to plead with Makoto, telling him of their happy memories. Spectre uses Omega Fang but Ghost blocks it with some cars in the junkyard by using NEWTON to pile them up between the two of them. Makoto screams furiously about Takeru’s cowardice as he can’t see Ghost in the aftermath of the attack.

-Aran watches from a distance and remarks that he has never seen Makoto so emotional and smirks.

-Shibuya and Narita are in the abandoned factory where they tells Onari and Akari who have just arrived that TOMONORI and the others are building some strange thing in the factory. Onari wonders what it is and Akari says that it is obviously a monolith.

TSUNEO finds TOMONORI and pleads with him to remember their friendship, but TOMONORI won’t hear him and sicks the BeeGanma on his former friend. Takeru rides in and shoots the Ganma from the height of a bike jump.

-No longer being strangled, TSUNEO ceases TOMONORI who says he will kill him, but TSUNEO keeps struggling, saying that he will save his friend if it kills him.

-Ghost exorcises the GanMook from TOMONORI and the friends share a sudden and awkward reunion. Takeru is happy for TSUNEO, who gets to know a joy that he can’t just yet.

-The Daitenkuu crew sees the effects of Takeru at work and Akari pulls the Spider-Lantern from her bag illuminating the ephemeral for them all, so they can see the fight between Ghost and the Ganma.

-Shibuya freaks out. Akari tries to calm him down, assuring him that somehow this is all real. Onari says they both need more training and Narita just can’t look away.

-The BeeGanma flies around and brings out the big guns with BILLY THE KID. the Ganma says it won’t work, but Takeru notices that one Bee is not like the others and calls upon the Spider-Lantern to help him. it traps the Ganma in a web and he explodes it. The Ganma breaks apart into a Black Eyecon and a Magnifying Glass.

-Takeru and the others are happy about the victory but an explosion goes off elsewhere in the factory and they run to it. Akari laments that they won’t be able to study the monolith there as the group looks at its scattered debris.

-Charming. TSUNEO and TOMONORI’s special greeting is “You and I are friends for life. Even if we die… We’ll still hang out in hell.”

The friends thank Takeru for saving TOMONORI and Yurusen pops up to tell him it is a good thing he saved TOMONORI because someone possessed by a GanMook for 99 days becomes that GanMook and can not be saved anymore.

TSUNEO thanks Takeru again and tells him that he hopes he will find his missing friend some day soon.

-ARAN is perched high up at the factory and remarks that it is too bad the monolith had to go as it had been operating for a good deal of time so far, but it is better to lose it than have it examined by his enemies. It’s no big deal.

-In the lab, Onari and Akari look at the Monolith and wonder why the Ganma were constructing one. She says that if she can gain access to the database that should help them learn a lot about the one in the lab. Takeru interrupts her to tell her that Spectre is Makoto. Akari is shocked.

-Makoto holds Kanon’s Eyecon and asks her to be patient because he will soon take all of Takeru’s Eyecons. She remains silent and he acts what is wrong. She speaks, but the episode ends, so we don’t get to hear it.

Just wondering about “Makoto-nii-chan” is that like Makoto-bro or Brokoto? or Makobro?

RX124 Preshow: Kamen Rider Ghost 07-08 Reactions and Questions

The deadline for submitting feedback to be aired on -RX! 124 is Thursday December 3, 2015 2:00pm PST, but we welcome feedback anytime after that as well in our comments section, in or inbox or through Twitter or on Tumblr.

First off, I really enjoyed this Ghost two-parter. The whole thing was done really well. It felt familiar and refreshing because it was been about two months since we left Drive in the rear view mirror with its frequent “traditional” two-part episodes. The “standard” two-parter is one of my least favorite aspects of Kamen Rider. The structure of Ghost so far has been gloriously Showa-spirited, so one-shot that having this bigger story felt good, it was like getting a Rider feast. I look forward to more two-parters sprinkled in the series and maybe even a longer arc! I love this show so much. It is so fun and so enjoyable. Mostly. A sticking pint for me is Makoto’s apparent Sister Complex.

Narukami's Fight Card

“It’s only natural.”

-Yu Narukami Sister Complex Kingpin of Steel, from Persona 4 Arena

We get this compelling pathos. Makoto is worked over a bit by Saionji and then shifts immediately to thinking that his trust in Ryu Tenkuuji had been misplaced. He goes on this spell of not really knowing what to think anymore. Makoto is so clearly conflicted and it was riveting to see him struggle with articulating his confusion and anger to the son of the man who condemned him and his sister to hell for 10 years. Makoto feels like Takeru and the others abandoned him and Kanon and what’s more, Takeru’s father, someone he believed in betrayed him and his sister. By the end of the episode we see Makoto making a vow to a reticent Kanon, which is what dropped the cement pellet into my gut. I have a bad feeling about how Makoto regards his little sister.

I’m sure that the intention is there. I think Ghost’s creatives want me to feel unsettled by Makoto imbalance. He is obviously off-kilter. The conversation Makoto has with Saionji early in 08 sowed and manured and watered the seeds of Makoto’s hyper sensitivity regarding Kanon. Obviously I have never experienced something like he has, but the fact that Makoto tells Takeru he doesn’t deserve to speak his little sister’s name and nearly goes into berserker mode because of it fully set in bloom the garden that expresses his unhealthy relationship with his sister. Going back to that final scene, I am hopeful that Ghost’s creative team will give Kanon agency and continue to let her voice her feelings. How can Makoto actually, maturely, respectfully have a relationship with Kanon if he doesn’t consider how she feels? It feels like Makoto treats Kanon like a possession at this point and that really scares me for the both of them. That is a path that can only lead to sorrow. I am happy to be made uncomfortable by Makoto’s personal arc and the arc of the Makoto-Kanon relationship as long as it spends the appropriate amount of time in each stage and ends in a healthy place.

Anyway, enough of my thoughts. What do you think?

What do you think about Makoto having a sister complex? Am I reading this correctly, does Makoto in fact have a sister complex? How do you feel a main character in Ghost having a Sister Complex?
