What, if anything, is being said about the world and our place in it in this episode? Ghost deals with the idea of Icons and Great Men, in a way that makes focusing narrowly on obtaining tangible objects relating to them important, but what makes a person great? What does that mean?
Let’s turn a discerning eye to what could be the Macro Message hidden in this episode of Ghost!
Ghost 05’s Macro Message According to Ammit:
I think this episode was trying to say that you need to look before you leap? Takeru assumed that the case with Kanta was unimportant, or at least he didn’t have the gumption to address it himself and suggested Akari look into it first. IF they were busy this would make sense, let Takeru work on a case with a known Ganma operating and have Akari determine where they need to next focus their efforts. Takeru initially didn’t want to deal with it because he wasn’t feeling so great. Next Takeru just assumes that his belief in himself will be enough to let him beat Spectre. Finally, after BlueRyu challenges Takeru on his willingness to give up his life for another, Takeru spends most of the rest of the episode grappling with his doubt. He swore he’d protect people and decided to fight to get his life back, but did he really consider what all that meant?
Takeru visiting his father’s grave is an important step for himself. He really needs to stop and consider what he wants to do and how he will do that, starting now.
Ghost 05’s Macro Message According to Aleph:
This thing where we start to address Takeru’s resolve in the face of just plain being not as good at violence as other people is really thrilling and gives us a vector from which to criticize the “will to power” MO that seems to define Spectre and, through that, one of the larger themes of the series, specifically the way in which our inspiration matters a lot less than what we do with it. Both Ghost and Spectre have some stuff they need to get done and where one is trying to take what he wants out of life through force, the other is just trying to deal with his internal conflict and ultimately gets what he wants through redemption hugs.
I mean, I don’t know that we really do more than set up that conflict, but we’re at least creating a really stark contrast between people who will go to extremes to get what they want and people who want to build what they want by cultivating a community. It’s that thing where you don’t get to be great on your own. You do what you do and if you’re lucky, people will think well on what you’ve done.
Ghost 05’s Macro Message According to Cannibal Sarracenian:
As of now I don’t have much to say as the episode is clearly only part 1 of a small story arc. As it is it seems to be building a two-parter.
Ghost 05’s Macro Message According to Sono:
A lot of what I’m getting from this episode is about priorities, and how easy it is to get distracted and lost and turned around. Takeru starts focusing more on what he’s lost (Nobunaga, the fight against Spectre), than his goal of gaining new eyecons. Because he gets so caught up in this, he loses focus and Spectre gets into his head even further with talk of him being weak and soft. Takeru then begins focusing on this even more than his lost eyecons. How can he survive and protect? He’s told it’s impossible.
It’s hellish getting caught in a loop of doubt. It is the actual worst. You feel like you have to solve the immediate problem or you’ll never be able to deal with the big picture issue, but sometimes that one piece doesn’t even matter. Takeru was doing GREAT before this, and if he’d continued on as he was, he would be well on track. But he’s been derailed. He’s lost, and he wants help but he doesn’t know what “Help” could possibly be.
I do have a few complaints about the episode, but they’re relatively minor and all in all, in I think this episode set up a LOT of good info that will unfold as we progress! We’re getting a lot of interesting info especially about our antagonists and I’m curious where it’s gonna go.
The unKamenCrew’s Top 3 Woments from Ghost 05
- The directing. It was actually directing. Interesting visuals, thrilling action, good performances. Really made me happy.
- Gonna +1 that bike chase/fight/whatever/thing. I about lost my sugar at that. Not to mention the little bit about the dirtbike-styled bike fighting the chunkier, less toyetic, more ‘realistic’ crotch-rocket? It’s a nice bit of visual shorthand about Our Hero being more of a kid and Spectre being a cool dangerous adult who doesn’t play by the rules.
- Spectre’s finishers. They’re freaking nightmarish. The Nobunaga army was frightening enough but the Ganma getting torn apart inside the pyramid? YIKES.
- +1 on death by pyramid and the duplicated shotguns; Pyramid of Death is amazing
- Kanta crushing Takeru with his failure. It can hurt so badly to have a kid not believe in you and this did a decent job of conveying that. Also, the use of Kanta’s unfiltered honesty and expectation of Takeru were used nicely to show Takeru that he needs to rethink how he is doing things.
- Akari affirming the positive in Takeru while Onari joined in on the criticism about Takeru’s unwillingness to make decisions. Takeru isn’t a child, but it is crucial to affirm the good in a kid when dealing with a failing or mistake. From there support and encouragement are vital and I’m not saying Onari and Akari should serve to deliver this combo of 1. Criticism 2. Affirmation and 3. Encouragement, I think it showing up 2 more times can send the message that this positive response in the one to take.
- Though as bothered as I am by Sage’s creeping, I will concede that they are giving Akari a mild awareness of Sage, which could result in the ULTIMATE BEAUTIFUL IRONY of her being the one to kind of have a greater spiritual awakening to see ghosts instead of Onari, which could lead to a really interesting narrative between them that I am really hoping for.
- Yurusen showing up with the bike was niiiice. So was that bike fight. God I love Ghost’s bike.
- Onari and Akari overall in this ep. They have great chemistry. Onari telling her to use Shiranui, and then the scene at the graveyard and their banter. “I don’t believe in barriers.” “Well then why don’t you try and go through it?” And Akari just poking at it. I’d love to see her try to figure out how Takeru is able to do it and try to replicate it for later.
- Interesting how previous three episodes have now been about rather realistic issues. First it was the corrupt politicians and loansharks, then its corporate coercion and monopoly. Now its city governors shutting down educational institutes in favour of constructions that only benefit them. Its rather surprising, and kinda neat. Its a decent way of worldbuilding in a way Rider hasn’t done in years really.
- MOTORCYCLE FIGHT MOTORCYCLEFIGHTTTT
- Scenes with Spectre was pretty neat. His henshin was nice.
In keeping with Ms. Akari’s love of the empirical, the following contains observable information from the events of the day Akari received a set of injuries and Takeru and Onari set up the Daitenkuu temple as a headquarters for staging paranormal investigations.

Bellow is a fairly thorough rundown of the episode
-57 days left… really? We went from 87 to 57 when we missed a week in between? I don’t believe that based on Akari asking Takeru about Spectre as if it JUST happened…
-Takeru bristles under Akari’s questions about Spectre and runs from the lab after saying he doesn’t want to be asked about it anymore.
-Sage isn’t in the lab.
-Hat confronts Sweater on a rooftop about him keeping his word to help gather the Heroic Eyecons. Sweater assures Hat that he will do it and releases 5 blank/black Eyecons saying “I’ll just have to do what I can on my own.” They fly away and he grins.
-The 5 blank Eyecons enter 5 people pouring over blue prints at KANOKO City Hall
-A man in blue and black comes to Daitenkuu Temple and quickly leaves after seeing Takeru.
-Takeru, Onari and Narita speak with a potential client, a young boy, KANTA. Shibuya and Narita are excited that even a kid knows about them and Naria jokes that he is probably there about a school ghost story.
–KANTA says it is about the school. His old school got closed down and a new City Hall was set to be built there, but some of the parents protested. His mother was injured by some invisible force while protesting the municipal maneuver.
-Takeru can’t focus and seems disinterested in the case. He tells Onari to have Akari look into it.
-Akari is working hard to answer all the ghosty questions while Sage watches her and worries a few times that she is able to sense his presence. He almost wants to help her but leaves when she asks about Spectre.
-At the closed school people are still protesting. KANTA calls to his mother and another shooting happens. People hit the ground and KANTA runs to his mom. Takeru tells Onari to protect them and runs off to face the Ganma who was shooting at them from inside a white convertible.
-The Ganma is being chauffeured by a moon Ganma and has a trench coat and fedora with a tommy gun arm.
-The Ganma has his driver take them away but Yurusen brings the Ghostriker and Takeru gives chase. The chase is interrupted and the Ganma gets away when Spectre almost knocks Takeru’s head off with his bike.
-Spectre drives off and Takeru chases him, leading to a fist fight when Spectre knocks Takeru off the Ghostriker.
-Spectre counts up Takeru’s shortcomings and says that HE doesn’t ask the Eyecons for their power, he commands them. Takeru says they’ll see who is stronger and does an Omega Drive with Edison, but the Nobunaga finisher breaks his transformation and Spectre takes Edison.
-Speactre breaks his transformation and is the man who was at Daitenkuu earlier. He chides Takeru that he couldn’t even save himself, but now he is protecting others and asks if Takeru would be able to give up his life for someone else. Takeru hesitates and Blue Ryu tells him he is too soft in how he thinks and fights and leaves him saying, “You’ll have to make a decision at some point.”
-Sweater calls out to BlueRyu and thanks him for helping to protect his Ganma. BlueRyu tells Sweater not to rely on the Ganma so he asks him for BlueRyu to help him this time. BlueRyu says his hands are full and glowers at Sweaters questioning of the Heroic Eyecon’s importance.
-Akari and Onari who have KANTA with them find Takeru lying on the ground at the bottom of the stairs where Blue Ryu left him and are concerned. He asks them if he is too soft. Onari says he could be, that he is certainly indecisive. Akari is flustered by this and tells Takeru he should do what he does and just believe in himself.
-As Akari and Onari argue over the idea of telling Takeru he is weak and can be more resolute (Onari says the answer does lie in Takeru’s heart but a deficiency or weakness is preventing him from knowing it) KANTA asks takeru if he solved the issue with his school. Takeru meets KANTA at his level and simply says “sorry.” KANTA runs away and Takeru slips into the ethereal plane and wanders off.
-Takeru goes to the abandoned school and asks his father if her is too weak. He phases through the gate and sits on some steps within the school grounds where he overhears discussion of the school site being important for the Ganma. Yurusen shows up and tells him that the Eye Symbol can remove the Eyecons from their hosts. Takeru transforms and exorcises the Eyecons from the five men.
-Takeru destroys 3 of the Ganma, but the fedora’d Ganma shows up and distracts him. Onari and Akari are at the school and get captured by the GanMooks. The GanMafioso tells Takeru that he’ll Onari and Akari will be killed if Takeru keeps fighting him.
-Takeru takes a barrage to the chest and falls to the ground lamenting how he can’t make the decision to protect his friends or fight the Ganma.
-Spectre comes along to get the Newton Eyecon Takeru dropped, but the GanMafioso attacks him, when it becomes clear he isn’t there to help. The two GanMooks let go of their hostages to fight Spectre who dispatches them with the TUTANKHAMEN Eyecon and a scythe weapon made with a SNAKE CELL PHONE and his Boom Stick. He sends the Fedora Ganma to the Shadow Realm and says “whoever gets in my way will pay for it! No matter who they are…”
-Spectre grabs the Newton Eyecon and attacks Takeru. The Rider Kick each other and while he falls and gets hurt, takeru recovers the Eyecon.
-Sweater checks in on Spectre and laughs about his “Anyone who gets in my way…” line. He says it sounds so like him and pats him on the shoulder, mentioning that work at the school had already been completed, and blithely walks off.
-At Daitenkuu Temple, Onari and Akari are with KANTA. Onari tells KANTA that his mother and her associates were successful in getting the city to change their plans. KANTA thanks them and tells them he is glad that “that cool guy” told him about their services. Onari and Akari wonder who it could have been.
-Takeru visits his father’s grave. Akari and Onari can’t get in because of a force field and are bothered they can’t go ask Takeru what he’s talking about with his dad.
-Takeru asks his dad if he is cut out for this task and says he doesn’t know what to do anymore.
-BlueRyu looks out over the water and holds his Eyecon saying “Wait for me.”
