False Start – Drive 01 – RX! 085

Don’t forget to go grab the FINAL Gaim episode with Tod and Rob. It isn’t in the normal feed due to explicit language.

For those who still can’t access the episode, but want to I put it in the Google Drive, which should be accessible to all.

Funky Spike brutally destroying Roimyudo 006. Little monster.

Aleph, Ammit, Ashley and Sono discuss and review Kamen Rider Drive 01- Why Did My Time Stop?

Today we’re putting Drive to the test as speedy as we can, as we cover:

Q1. Why is this Rider different from every other Rider?

Q2. Does the first episode accomplish the series’ stated goal of marking a new chapter in Kamen Rider history?

Facts-What we know, know about the plot and characters of the show

-Tomari knows who he is. He is now a washed up, but formerly competent Sargent pulled out of his rut by Mr. Belt’s call to action.

-Kiriko has been working for Mr. Belt and whoever else this whole time waiting to help Shinnosuke get back up on his feet. She keeps him in check and does her best to fight the Roimyudo.

Potential Leads- These are things to keep an eye on, as they may develop into something more interesting or central to the narrative in time

-Drive appeared with the Shift Cars on the day of the Global Freeze 6 months prior to the series start.

-The Roimyudo numbers float away and we see Heart asking “029” if it wants a new body.

-The Shift Cars, like the floating numbers, seem to have agency.

-The Global Freeze being an event with aftershocks which have long lasting repercussions for ordinary people is neat, although it is changing the way the world works, which won’t be acknowledged by other Rider shows in the future which probably shouldn’t bother me, as I don’t care for continuity like that. I can’t believe it’s been so long since we’ve had a Kamen Rider series to watch and discuss, and this guy is red and black too, which is weird right after Wizard.

Other Notes-Things that stick out, but aren’t really important to the narrative

-I don’t like the Shift Car tracks, that seems a little too fantastical, certainly too convoluted. If they just flew to enemies or jumped like Speed Racer’s Mach 5 or drove and could fly like the Memory Gadgets, that would be fine, but the technology for the perpetual road is ludicrous- yes, more so than the Rider suit tech forming from the belt or whatever again and again…

-Tridoron’s Tire changes are also a problem for me. Putting tech argument off for now- I just accept it- the mobility and flexibility is an issue for me. Sanjo didn’t bother to legitimize how W had access to Memory Gadgets for the odd special attack when he would slap one onto his stick or gun, so I’m not sure I trust him to stay faithful to how Tridoron helps Shinnosuke accomplish Tire Changes.

-Kiriko throwing her shoe at Shinnosuke was great.

-Rinna reminds me of Megumi from Kiva: serious about her field, but cheery and not wrapped up in projecting some persona.

-Genpachiro’s partner had a look about him when Shinnosuke showed up, as if the camera took a moment to wink at him. Mach?!

-Why triple lever pull?! It’s so kloogy!

  1. Q1. Hype marketing, i even i, who has only seen post-decade riders, know this sentence to be false, of course this series is still young.

Q2. The only major thing i can think of is that now the Heisei riders outmatch Showa 16:15 now; As noted by producer Shinichiro Shirakura in the run-up to the release of Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai, with the 15 Showa Riders and then 15 Heisei Riders facing off being “the point in which Heisei has finally aligned with Showa and in which both are equal”, Drive, as the Rider following Gaim, marks the point where “Heisei Rider history will actually surpass Showa, making it a massive turning point for the whole franchise’s history”.
